People who say it should only be issued for imminent danger are stupid.

Not really. The alerts have their place but a general public service announcement isn't that place. People will tune them out and turn them off, so when it's a definite threat to life they could potentially be ignored.
Shows he is proactive and responsive. Let's hope he applies that to sky lanterns, balloon releases, swimming in inadvisable places, domestic firework use etc. Just not in the form of an Emergency Alert.

It was the Fire Service who asked for the alert to be issued and the Government complied with it.

And that has really upset some of his opponents!

Yup. Have my bingo card nearly full already
"Nanny state"
"Should have done it sooner"
"Local politician, tinkering with trivialities when he should be stopping wars"
"Misuse of the alert"
"U turn" (worth extra points as it will be a challenge to squeeze this in)
"Only cares about the North" (extra points as with "U turn")

@Zonder he has definitely upset Lowe life 😂

And well done to Burnham for that 😃

I am aware. I still don't think it fit the definition of Emergency Alert. Vital public information, yes.
Should we have one from the police asking people not to carry knives, drive drunk?
It doesn't make me or anyone else stupid to query the method of delivery for this message.

Exactly. It was the right thing to do. Most of the fire ms raging were started by humans being fucking stupid. The point needs ramming home.

BIossomtoes · 15/08/2026 09:46

Morning all, hope everyone’s safe and well. Good news pointy, you must be relieved. It’s 26 and overcast here this morning, the dogs are delighted.

Those humans are not going to get less fucking stupid. Disposable BBQs should have been permanently banned years ago. Kids setting fires should always have been dealt with more robustly.

We are in a completely unprecedented drought, everything is bone dry and people are setting fires either accidentally or deliberately. People's houses are burning down, wildlife and plants destroyed. I think the alert was a good idea.

I have been smelling smoke on and off for weeks now. I can sometimes even see it drifting over the mountains. So maybe I am biased.

Spandauer · 15/08/2026 09:55

Still sweating it out in SW London. The weather apps are all showing something different for next week - taunting us with little rain symbols which then disappear. 😭

DH looks at (and naively believes) the Apple weather app which is showing 50-65% chance of rain next week whereas I use the Met Office and BBC apps and they're saying "no chance"! Rain dancing is probably more effective at this point.

eta: great news re DS Pointy

^Yes same here. As I said, just after the alert I spotted a fire in someone’s garden. The sad thing is that I don’t think the alert will get through to idiots.

Let’d hope for lots of rain next week!

And that has really upset some of his opponents!

Kemi is furious.

Apparently it's the role of the PM to miss at least 5 COBRA meetings to make sure a crisis has a chance to really "bed in"

If you weren't aware this alert was coming then you rather are exactly the sort of person that needed it.

He is clearly doing something right. Imagine if Kemi was happy with him!

Just reading some of the threads on MN is enough to show we needed the alert!

As above, so below.

Yes, some people are really are that fucking stupid. And not afraid to use it.

Nothing like a bit of controversy to raise public awareness. All the arguing about whether it was necessary or not means even more people are talking about the risks, so whichever way you look at it, the alert has done its job. The minority of idiots are largely unreachable anyway. Its ordinary people who didn't realise the state of things who will have been given pause for thought.

I'm sure you're not stupid but this response is.

Just take a look at the wildfires. We can't afford some idiot having fun with a BBQ and a spark setting off a fire. They're not just little flames easily stamped out. The ground is so dry it spreads so fast.

Saucery · 15/08/2026 10:23

Ah. Difference of opinion on delivery of a vital public information message is now 'stupid'. Not really how these threads usually go but if that's the direction we're heading in, ok.
Let's have so many non emergency alerts that people start switching them off. That's a fabulous idea.

That is a bit of a leap. I don't think Burnham is going to tit about with them willy nilly.

I can’t remember when we last had one before last night. It kept repeating so in the end I turned the notifications off, I turned them back on again this morning. I really don’t think there’s much danger of such a surfeit that people turn them off or ignore them. Equally I think you’re right about disposable barbecues, they should be illegal. I hope they will be now.

Didn’t realise that.

i don’t think we are expecting a cascade of alerts.

LizzieW1969 · 15/08/2026 10:37

I think the only alert we had before yesterday’s was a test alert about a year ago? You can hardly say that alerts are being overused.

It’s the use of fire pits around here that has worried me.

@LizzieW1969 hope dd is ok now, really hope those of you near the fires it’s gets better really soon must be really very worrying, it feels much fresher this morning here even a slight breeze thunderstorms forecast for later this afternoon but who knows the rain that was meant to be arriving next week has disappeared from my weather app.
Pointy glad Ds is recovering well excellent news.

I’m so sorry I missed this. Thank you so much for asking about DD1. She’s fine now, this is simply how she reacts to unexpected loud noises, she finds them very distressing.

It would have been worse if she’d been wearing her hearing aids.

BestIsWest · 15/08/2026 10:44

Our new neighbours had a mishap with their fire pit a week ago and their fence and part of their drive caught fire. Luckily they managed to put it out before it spread to their wooden garage and cars but at one point it looked quite scary. A week on with no rain it could have been much worse.
