@BestIsWest I remember being woken up at a friend’s house party when I was a student by a neighbour banging on the door to say the garage was on fire. It had been caused by a smouldering barbecue. It was quickly put out with a hose and some buckets of water luckily, but if everywhere had been dry after prolonged drought conditions it could have been a very different story. It’s surprisingly easy for fires to get out of control even in normal conditions.

I can’t remember when we last had one before last night. It kept repeating so in the end I turned the notifications off, I turned them back on again this morning. I really don’t think there’s much danger of such a surfeit that people turn them off or ignore them. Equally I think you’re right about disposable barbecues, they should be illegal. I hope they will be now.

I think if you are with a mobile company that uses more than one other network (eg Giff Gaff) you get more than one because you get one from every network they use.

SerendipityJane · 15/08/2026 11:09

Surely here is an alert we can all get behind ?

(Our local wags hard at work again)

There are some BIG opinions about the alert coming in Welsh first (to most people - I know of some who had it the other way around - I assume it was a signal/network issue) this morning! I do think a single bilingual alert would be better for lots of reasons, but honestly, if the approx 3 mins before the English comes are enough to make a meaningful difference you are probably fucked anyway. Plus google translate can give you the info in seconds.
I would be interested to know whether the Welsh was sent first and then the English simultaneously to the whole of England and Wales - ie did English speakers in Wales get it at the same time as elsewhere (allowing for network variation). I kind of suspect that’s the case as Welsh first is the policy and it must be easier to send the English message just once to everyone… which puts a slightly different complexion on the ‘Welsh speakers get help first’ view!

BestIsWest · 15/08/2026 11:25

Interesting questions @cardibach. Lots jumping up and down on SM about Plaid conspiring to save the Welsh speakers first. I suspect Reform will try to make hay from this.

If it wasn't possible to translate a Chinese menu in real time, or a conversation in Yoruba on a bus in real time (yes, I have, so what ? 😎) with the same fucking device that received the alert, then I would have some sympathy.

However since it is, anyone - yes anyone - who feels they need to make a point about it, gets put one square closer to the "terminally dim" side of my estimation.

The heat may have made me (more) grumpy.

It’s the use of fire pits around here that has worried me.

For sure. People are so desperate to stick to their fire habits that they're not thinking straight.

beginning to think this county has lost its mind.
exclusively populated by the terminally (online) offended.

TemperanceWest · 15/08/2026 11:33

Has anyone seen the thread comparing the alert to Covid restrictions? Seriously bonkers.

I'm with giffgaff. They use O2. I just got the one alert.

The alert bothered me because I startle easily, I was in the middle of making dinner so my mind was already on multiple tasks to suit multiple dietary needs and I was already so disturbed by the ferocity of the wildfires, this summer, that I was fearing the worst. I don't think it was wrong to send it.

BIWI · 15/08/2026 11:52

Hah! Deleted because it mentions crapto. Which is odd though, as it was linked without deletion on the other thread.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2026 12:25

Zonder · 15/08/2026 09:05

And that has really upset some of his opponents!

Hasn’t it just.

and some of the British public.

I’ve seen loads of posts on SM about why he thought it necessary to call a COBRA meeting about the obvious and send a national alert about the obvious.

its as if people choose not to understand protocol.

placemats · 15/08/2026 12:28

It's obviously upsetting them because they know it's the right thing to do.

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2026 12:28

TemperanceWest · 15/08/2026 09:27

Yes, only to be used if we are about to be nuked 🙄.

The speed I read id have only got to the important bit as it happened. 😂

And it’s obvious - I would have thought - it’s better to warn people about things they can control over things about to happen they can do nothing about!

Drawn at random, from a pool, it's 50/50 as to whether that person is above or below the average IQ.

I realise that at times it seems like the 100% you engage with are the thick. But that's just how statistics can be counterintuitive. Birthday paradox and all that.

Whatever Burnham does will be wrong for the unthinkingly tribal.

Completely agree - it's all the anti Burnham/anti Labour 'usual suspects' who are automatically and loudly against anything and everything Burnham/Labour do

As you say unthinkingly so

If there hadn't been a Cobra meeting he wouldn't have been taking the situation seriously enough.

Exactly.

This is my (and a few other regulars on here) neck of the woods right now ☹️. Nothing to worry about. Keep lighting those bbqs and fires.

This can’t do right for doing wrong it seems.
Lizzie glad she is ok.
my weather app is doing my head in, one minute thunderstorms & rain for a few days early next week, then pouff disappears.

dontcallmelen · 15/08/2026 14:01

Dreadful Temperance a lot of MN though if it’s not happening right in front of them then it doesn’t exist.

placemats · 15/08/2026 14:05

Can anyone explain what's funny about someone who posted in local social media that they didn't hear the alarm because they were burning wood pallets out in the back garden?

I know this person and know where they live. His garden backs onto the school fields. Everywhere is a tinderbox. Wealthy family in a wealthy road btw.

Same here re: the rain.

Surely this should only cost 30p 😂
