A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Wes Streeting has now refused to commit to spending 3% on defence by 2030. Confused

I think we are just seeing the beginning of the end now. Work doesn't pay anymore, people are seeing through it all and I can't see a way out of it.

Oof. Front page of the DM, also on the front of the Sun this morning.

I've just been to vote for our new mayor.
Tumbleweed at the polling station. Staff said it was dead, and the few who had turned up to vote didn't know there was a new voting system. They said someone went in this morning just because they saw the polling station, but had to ask what the vote was for.

We've had one pamphlet through the post explaining the new system, which most people wouldn't have bothered opening. No flyers from any party, just nothing.

Rodney can't remember his kittenhood, although he's been re-enacting it around our faintly bemused FFDog.😅

I can sometimes work out who's posting under a different name from their posting style, but not always.🤔

RodneyKitten · 30/07/2026 11:18

I can’t, usually, although there is a Visitor I worked out immediately!

It's awful isn't it. It says the French are just watching them . It's so stressful thinking we have no money for defense , irg are slipping agents in to the UK to harm us and we are paying the French to stop them !

38thparallel · 30/07/2026 11:33

Article in the Spectator today about the negative effects of the VAT charges on specialist schools such as Chethams, Yehudi Menuhin and the Royal Ballet school etc.
As the students are chosen for their talent, the majority have assistance with fees and these fees have increased.
Surely it’s in the national interest to have these specialist schools and to ensure the most talented kids can access them.

It frightens me where most are coming from as I have DDs.

Of course its in the national interest to help these kids fly high. But thats not how the left see it. They'd rather drag everybody down - including dc with SEN.

Any sign of those 6500 teachers? Thought not.

On the boat crossings, I read recently that fewer migrants are entering southern Europe and that the UK’s just been seeing a proportional reduction. So the government has had no hand whatever in the decrease over recent months. And now there seems to have been an uptick. So Labour’s record so far is one of absolute futility.

As I’ve said several times previously on these threads, I don’t believe any government can stop immigration unless we have a third-country processing agreement (as many in the EU are now pursuing). So I blame Labour to the extent that they cancelled Rwanda.

All in all, I fear that we’re in for a lot more bullshit under Burnham than even Starmer went in for.

(I’ve also said before, and will again, that this issue bothers me less than it does others. But I do recognise that there are people more directly affected by it than I am.)

Elsewhere, Streeting’s posturing and rowing back is sad to see in its own way - he’s been broken by events - but it does look to me like an early sign of turbulence under the surface of Burnham’s cabinet. Too many people bending the knee to Burnham and too few baubles to keep them all happy. I expect some negative briefings from disappointed supporters as well as embittered ex-ministers.

DancingFerret · 30/07/2026 12:33

My take is Burnham is Starmer Mk2; some people have been taken in by his softer delivery and seemingly affable demeanour, but the gloves will really come off come September.

They're all answerable to higher masters, I think no matter what face you put up the puppet masters run the circus.

Let's see what his first budget holds. I think that's sink or swim time really.

Well here in my patch Conwy is twinned with somewhere in Japan Llandudno with somewhere in Germany. So two enemies in wwII. Conwy really pushed out the boat hospitality wise a few years ago. Flags everywhere, you tube video of Conwy translated into Japanese. Strangely we also pulled in lots of Chinese. They all love castles.
