Not a sausage on Farage's X about the result. Just a scaremongering "Wake Up" video.

BIWI · 01/08/2026 10:19

Have a lovely holiday @DuncinToffee - we'll try and behave in your absence Wink

Those results are interesting - the Tories must be upset/angry/worried, etc. I wonder how they're going to spin that?

What I don't understand is why the Lib Dems poll/do so badly. I'd have thought they were a natural home for those who feel disenfranchised (for what ever reason) by the Labour party, or the Conservative party.

Possibly people who would be natural LibDem voters voting tactically to keep Reform out?

I’m still horrified at the turn out. 25%!

Have a wonderful holiday @DuncinToffee. We’re going to need a new thread before you come back.

We need a new title and someone to start it.

If you would like to do that?

My contribution to the title is: Burnham: Lúnasa sona

BestIsWest · 01/08/2026 10:33

Yes, it’s an interesting idea @SerendipityJane . What would happen if 50% of the electorate don’t engage? Do we keep having elections? Have I understood? Probably not!
Turnout at the last GE was only about 60% I often wonder idly about compulsory voting. I have no answers on whether it works or not. How do you penalise people for not voting?

BestIsWest · 01/08/2026 10:34

I don’t want to be a thread starter. I’m not brave enough.

Voting is compulsory in Australia and there's a fine for not participating. My brother has paid the fine a couple of times 😔

Have a great holiday Duncin

I can do it. Have done it before and did the World Cup threads.

My thread title Lúnasa sona suggestion means Happy August in Irish.

Sorry, I can’t agree to a title that references autumn at the beginning of August! I’ll do it if nobody else wants to. How about Receso para reorganizarse?

BIossomtoes · 01/08/2026 10:39

I wasn’t quick enough off the mark. It’s all yours @placemats.

It references August…
I guess it’s a similarity with Welsh where July, Gorffenaf, translates as ‘end of summer’. It’s often the case that July weather is better, so maybe the elders had a point…

August is the last month of summer.

I stand corrected. I can’t bear to think of autumn yet but I’m an obsessive spring and summer lover.

Oh I hear you loud and clear @BIossomtoes as I'm the same.

Happy for you to do this. It's a good title and the ending arse brings out the puerile in me 🫢

I looked at comments on a post on Facebook. Lots of ‘why was there a second count?’ From people who don’t understand the two round system. Lots of ‘Labour changed the system weeks ago so they could win’ - a) untrue, they changed it back to this a while ago and b) Labour would have som under FPTP anyway and some ‘where were the boxes kept overnight? No 10 North?’ From people who can’t accept. reform loss at all.
Plus comments that because Bev has short hair they can ‘see where this is going’. Appalling all round really.

Have a good hols @DuncinToffee

One of the disincentives for moving away from FPTP is that people are generally too thick to understand anything more complex.

It's always hard to contradict that argument in the face of such wilful ignorance.

However, that doesn't explain why PR was good enough in Ireland in 1919.

And low turnouts magnify the confusion for the terminally dim

Incidentally how many of the people complaining actually voted ? Because we should ignore anyone who chose not to vote. And that is 1,604,120 people who can get in the bin as far as I am concerned.

Have a great holiday @DuncinToffee

This year I'm looking forward to Autumn. Too hot in SW London 🥵

Me 3!

Im in an odd camp that I’m loving the fact we have a summery summer this year!

Im fed up of breaking up for summer hols and it raining 🤣

BIossomtoes · 01/08/2026 10:59

I put it down to being born in August and spending a substantial part of my childhood in a Mediterranean country.

BIWI · 01/08/2026 11:00

I hate, hate, hate bringing forward the end of summer! This year the supermarkets/shops were heralding their 'back to school' uniforms, even before the kids had broken up for the holidays.

And yesterday, browsing the Tu section in Sainsbury's, they've already started putting out their autumn clothes.

Stop it!

TBF I do hate that with a passion!

But I am fond a of fresh September morning that morphs into a lovely (not roasting) sunny day and mellow evening.
