Supermarkets aren’t victims. They’re companies

I also don't think that checkout staff are responsible for tackling shoplifters. Supermarkets should have security guards who are trained to apprehend people, like the police (occasionally) do. But untrained members of staff should not be expected to put themselves in harm's way.

I was once stopped at an Asda exit, because of a security tag on the back of a pack of steak, which I bought only once in a blue moon. I hadn’t been aware of the tag, and hadn’t taken my receipt at the self checkout!

Was escorted back to the checkout between TWO security staff, and had to stand there like a thief, while they went through the bin for my receipt. And thank goodness, they found it.

ALWAYS TAKE YOUR SELF-CHECKOUT RECEIPT!!

they'd still just be blokes minimally trained, like bouncers. They don’t have anymore right to apprehend or tackle them than you or I do. And if the police aren’t going to come and arrest them what are they really achieving apart from a deterrent

Arseholes. They should’ve just checked the self checkout security footage. Asda are the ones that make receipt printing optional.

I used to work in a food shop. So I have seen it a lot. Scumbags the lot of them. Shoplifters should be strung up by the short and curlys!

No because scummy people who shoplift are the sort of scummy people who would knife you. I would point it out to the staff though.

Anyone who does any kind of intentional law breaking is scum. We have laws for a reason.

No it's sensible. I was near the exit of a supermarket and the guard did tackle and the shoplifter became agitated and was scrapping and swung his arm towards the guard I nearly got slapyin the face. It's wholly irresponsible to get in a physical tooing and throwing over in this case a box of cereal!

Fucking hell - its inhumane to be anti shoplifting now. No wonder this country is screwed.

I politely stood back while a man was supposedly choosing a steak. He suddenly picked up the entire tray, opened his sports bag and tipped the whole lot in. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, he jumped over the exit bars and legged it.
I told an assistant who shrugged and said " Happens all the time!" Several £100's worth of steak. We eventually pay to cover the loses.

Not a supermarket, but until recently worked at a well known store.

When training, we were told they lose 20% stock value to thieves. We're given methods of distraction, but told to keep ourselves safe. A lot of manpower is spent on this in terms of distraction and monitoring of well known regulars In store. It's time that's not available for genuine customers. That 20% obviously takes away profits for company, but also money for improvements instore, reduces number of staff employed, limits wage rises for hard workers, and reduces amount of training that can be available.

I appreciate it can be hard when you're struggling, but it's absolutely not fair on those that are trying to do the right thing.

I think there’s possibly levels to it? I’ve witnessed people playing supermarket sweep trying to grab booze and meat etc who are clearly thieves trying to pull a fast one. I would and do always report these people to security etc.

On the other hand, I once saw a lady alone with a baby put a tin of formula under her pram whilst she had a basket of a few cheap things. Obviously she may still have paid for it, I didn’t follow her around, but I doubted she would as she had room in the basket. She looked like she was in a bit of a state and I didn’t say anything to anyone. I still wouldn’t now as I felt she looked like she genuinely needed it.

Its hard to say as so many people do try it on, but there’s a difference between someone desperate and someone out to make money from something that’s wrong
