What do you think of people who steal at supermarkets?

No but the humiliation of being searched and subsequently banned from a supermarket and then the threat of a court summons (that probably won’t come but still) isn’t most people’s idea of a fun day out. And you still wouldn’t have the steak!

No shit I had no idea that I needed to list all the steps between the police not coming out all the way to the most extreme repetitive perps eventually getting a few weeks of jail time in order to make it clear that I know what a court is.

But categorically the police don’t prevent it in the way a very serious six foot bloke in uniform in the seventies showing up and giving louts a stern talking to was preventative (and I said police don’t prevent it not that they aren’t bothered, you made that up). It’s funny how people keep saying police numbers are low though, I suspect a far bigger issue is that they’re all busy deployed to stop the useful idiots marching for the omnicause from being disorderly. Where are you getting these low numbers from? Because according to statista they dipped a bit but are back to average levels now and have been for a while. And yet they still can’t solve crime.

• a fellow shopper tips off staff/security. Perhaps they had their suspicions already but no way to search or check previously
• they ask to look in your bag then at your receipt after you attempt to leave without paying
• they find a whacking great bit of T-bone or whatever cut it was you fancied
• they escort you to an office and check the cctv and there is footage of you putting it in your pocket or bag, just like the customer observed
• maybe you scanned and paid for a couple of things at self checkout to make it less suspicious, which will have been logged and recorded. If you scanned your loyalty card they have your name and address to pass on to the police
• the manager threatens the police/criminal record etc but will probably give you a ban from the shop

this probably happens in a tiny percentage of thefts but it does occasionally happen.

No, it was company policy - they were told not to.

Confronting a shoplifter is idiocy; at best, you would get a mouthful of abuse and at worst, could be physically hurt.

Telling the staff is fine, but they have also been told not to intervene in cases of shoplifting.

They often put them on the top shelf and have added security, so for shoplifters, the steaks are high.

I put shoplifters in the scum of the earth bucket. We still in one best supported welfare states yet people still think they are entitled to more from others.

They should be given ankle tags that go off whenever they enter a shop so everyone will know a shop lifter is there.

Who else do you put in scum of the earth bucket?

There's quite a few: drug users, wife beaters, people who steal cars, the people that groom kids for county lines, burglars etc etc.

You should explore some corporate crime and corruption, it might do you good to extend that classification beyond poor people.

Why that is scummy too - I was hardly going to write a list of all criminal activity? We have a law and people who think they are above that can do what they want are scum. You seem a bit offended - are you a shoplifter?

So all criminal activity is scummy, so shoplifters aren’t that special after all. You just hate people who do illegal things.

I think they’re generally assholes who aren’t caught by police or security because so many people have gotten staff fired, gone on sbout their rights or gone to the Daily Fail making out the supermarket, which makes millions off us poor folk don’t ya know. One of my colleagues, a young twenty something who is timid as a mouse, was hauled over the coals for asking a known shoplifter about drink she hadn’t bought after a shopping she’d done. She was turning around to rush off and claimed she’d forgotten but the staff and employee saw her face smirking on camera and saw her try to put something over it. The shoplifter shouted bloody murder using the stores name over and over and saying how disgusting we all were when we were making millions etc etc The only reason the employee kept her job was because she said ‘but she had stolen it!’ afterwards and one of the other staff members advocated for her saying she could go unfair dismissal. The lady got an apology.

This thread is about the scrum who shoplift.

Anyone who shoplifts is deciding that they are above paying for things like everyone else. It is a choice that people make. I think it is a scrummy choice. There is no answer to "why did you choose to steal that?" which is acceptable.

I think if we ankle tagged shoplifters who were caught so that whenever they go into a shop an alarm went off. The social shame would reduce the number of shoplifters dramatically.

you have very unsophisticated ideas about shame and prevention. Very old fashioned, not updated with all the knowledge about human behaviour society has learned in the last 100 years.

Clearly we would not be friends in real life. People who steal from others are scum. It is as simple as that.

A good many supermarkets do now put anti-theft devices on certain goods. TBH I can understand why they tell staff not to tackle thieves - let’s call a spade a spade - because of the risk of attacks, knife or otherwise.

I was watching an episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody about a drug cartel the other day. They said that a lot of shoplifting and burglary is done by heroin addicts.

The point is when they basically have an open supermarket- few staff, self check outs, replace people with alarms and tech to keep stock safe- it creates an atmosphere of fair game and opportunity, and they do need to accept their role in that

I agree- staff shouldn’t be tackling shoplifters. If im honest I struggle to justify anyone needing to tackle a smack head to get a load of steak back.
