Have you seen it happen?
Doesn’t seem like police or security care

I guess I know some of the local junkies in my area by sight and if it looked like someone a bit less skaggy and they had a baby and I saw them put one thing of baby milk in their bag...I guess I'd be less likely to be annoyed.

But the main issue is it almost normalises it. I think normal folks now will be encouraged to steal because they see how easy it is.

I disagree with the thinking that normal people will just start shoplifting, because they see how easy it is. I am not going to start shoplifting for no reason whatsoever. If my circumstances were to drastically change, I would hope that I would be in the position to reach out to other services that are available for help, before resorting to shoplifting.

I think it's obvious the selfish and horrible dickheads have never run a business themselves.
If they did how would they like it done to them. What would they say?

OwlCalledSage · 19/07/2026 19:10

Absolute scumbags.

They make billions and pay virtually no corporation tax. I don’t think a few thefts is going to harm them. And plus they waste so much stock

Beneath contempt. A Thieves' Charter: written for and by thieves.

MaybeMeansMaybe · 19/07/2026 18:47

Why should they have to?

That's their business, they're they to make profits. They advertise the price clearly-buy it or don't but don't expect to take it for nothing because someone will be out of pocket, someone is paying for you, even if those pockets are very deep.

Do you think it would be okay to rob anything from any company that made a decent profit? Well, clearly you do.

I wonder if you are a thief or someone who has never made a penny in their lives.

If you're not a thief ,why make excuses for those who are and if you earn your money would you be happy to have your stuff nicked because you make more than Jack down the road?

Comments like yours (some chump up thread said she couldn't get worked up about it) diminish us all. Sadly, the Barbarians are at the gates justifying theft.

Take a day off Javier 🤣

Meadowfinch · 19/07/2026 19:14

They steal to order or choose things they know they can sell. Legs of lamb, beef joints, bottles of spirits. I don't think anyone steals lettuce and tissues.

It's just more crime that the police can't be arsed to deal with. The idea that it's a poor parent stealing to feed a child is complete rubbish.

Badbadbunny · 19/07/2026 19:15

Yep, seen it happen a few times in our village Co-Op. Usually big burly blokes from scaffold/roofing lorries who just come in, take their sandwiches, drinks, crisps, etc., and just walk out with them. Very rarely noticed by staff who are usually stocking shelves somewhere. When the staff are told, they just shrug and say they'll tell the manager. Apparently, they have, in the past, reported the lorry registration numbers to the police, and they have CCTV, but police apparently never take any action as the cost per person is usually less than a tenner.

Seen the same in our nearby town Greggs one lunchtime, again, some "workers" from a lorry who just breezed in, took what they wanted from the cabinets and walked out again.

That's fair enough and I wouldn't either. But if rules are visibly constantly being broken with no consequence there will be a proportion of people that will think 'if you can't beat em, join em'.

You think you would never become a drug addict/alcoholic but if every single other person in your town was and had been for generations you wouldn't stand much of a chance remaining sober. Even with the best intentions.

Well, I don't know who Javier is but I know the character of posters who think thieving is perfectly ok and even, like you, find it funny.

Anyway, mug that I am ,I shall continue to pay for what I want. I suppose you find that hilarious.

Still I suppose thieving arse holes will find that funny and add laughing emojos. You may not be one but you're giving a pretty good impersonation!

ExOptimist · 19/07/2026 19:28

They are scum. Exactly the same as someone who steals things from people's houses or pickpockets. It's all theft. There's no excuse or justification. In this country no one has to sink so low as to steal to eat. There are benefits and food banks all over the place.

Do people that make excuses for it realise that the more supermarkets lose money through theft the more prices rise for everybody? Businesses aren't there to give the products away to thieves for free. Many of them already give the food going out of date to organisations that provide food to people in need.

People that excuse it should never ever speak about how they don't like the way food prices rise, because covering losses due to theft is a part of the increase.

FilmsandBooks · 19/07/2026 19:31

If I’m being totally honest, I don’t really care as long as they aren’t physically hurting anyone and I certainly don’t think they’re scum, and I’ve never stolen anything in my life.

I think they’re mostly people with addictions and other social problems and labelling them scum and forth I f at the mouth about it isn’t helpful.

I just think it’s very funny you are spouting nonsense about other posters not contributing to society just because they turn a blind eye to a bit of incredibly minor (in a lot of cases) petty theft instead of crying out for the death penalty. No it’s not a particularly great reflection of their morals but you know, everyone has their cross to bear, there are a myriad of reasons why someone might steal something, ranging from money to addiction problems to a compulsive disorder or peer pressure or they might just be a twat. It’s not black and white.

And yeah of course businesses want to make a profit, but the big supermarkets only line the pockets at the top. Their on the ground staff are often treated like complete crap with regards to overtime and sick pay etc, and it’s also a myth that a bit of shrinkage is the reason why the prices keep being hiked.

I can’t bring myself to feel remotely sorry for someone that pays themselves a 10 million pound bonus while barely covering minimum wage for their coalface workers.

What about retail theft?

are there really enough resources to pursue all these shoplifters

The retailers will obviously pursue the most prolific offenders.

It's becoming easier to identify people as everyone we report to police is run through retrospective facial recognition technology so with decent CCTV anyone who has come into contact with police can be identified.

Some areas are trialling schemes where offenders go straight to court without arrest or police interview

It's a game of cat & mouse for retailers & police but there is a lot of resources going into it behind the scenes of what you can see in the stores.

PensionPTake · 19/07/2026 19:39

Dunno I don't know if they're stealing for fun or if it's because they can't afford to eat/buy basics.

hourspassed · 19/07/2026 19:43

I've seen it happen a few times. It make my blood boil. Of course there will be people who are genuinely desperate but the majority of people who commit these crimes are likely to be users of Class A drugs.

I don't know what the answer is but drugs is the cause of so many problems linked to criminality - shoplifting, GBH, murder. It's shocking and incredibly depressing.

TheBluntSeal · 19/07/2026 19:44

Berlinlover · 19/07/2026 15:30

I work in a supermarket and the amount of people walking around stuffing their mouths with food before they even reach the till is mind blowing. I would be so embarrassed handing a cashier an empty crisp packet or chocolate wrapper saying “I’ll pay for this too please”. And they are the few declaring what they’ve eaten.

I only did this while pregnant. I had hyperemesis and would faint at least once a day. If I didn't grab some chocolate milk (that, horlicks, and for some reason Burger King spicy beanburgers were usually a safe-ish food) and chug it then I'd keel over and a first aider would be wasting their time. I always paid and it's not stealing unless you leave without paying.

And DH is diabetic. He rarely has a hypo but when he does I'm not waiting in a queue for him to get worse before I find something.

Assume people who eat and pay have a reason, and put those pearls down.

I've never run a business
However I do know the difference between
Right and wrong.

Now that's not a dig at you I understand where you're coming from as retailers margins are small

Surely the vast majority are feral scumbags, and the more it's reported the more other scumbags think they'll do it too. The fact that there's no deterrent is appalling. This country is a fucking joke, and I'm sad and angry about the pathetic state of things.

Say a normal working person who steals a steak because they can’t afford it?

Well adjust your tastes to what you can buy.

RedGreen2 · 19/07/2026 20:31

I think it is really bad and costs us all a lot of money. I think there should be a stricter approach - we all make life choices and a don't sympathise with criminals.

exactly! A lot of people can’t afford steak! Thats a luxury item. If you steal a steak because you can’t afford it that’s a bit of a piss take.

Backedoffhackedoff · 19/07/2026 20:36

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/07/2026 19:04

The reason it’s rife in the U.K. is because unless it’s very high value theft, the police do absolutely nothing.

Gangs come from other countries specifically to shoplift - they know that even if they get caught, they are likely to get nothing but a slap on the wrist - if that.

The UK is ludicrously soft, and the thieves - whether home-grown or not - know that all too well.

I don’t really want the police spending their time on this though, do you?

Is it ok for Tesco et al to open more and more and more shoplifting hotspots, do very little to prevent it because it’s cheaper to lose stock than employ people, and just expect the tax payer funded police force / judiciary system to put more and more and more resource onto it?

Why? It’s only affecting the company. How is it affecting you? You could steal it as well?

No one steals a steak to take it home and eat it 🤣 they just sell it down the pub or door to door then buy drugs with the money
