That really is scummy behaviour. Tough shit if you can't afford steak, eat something else. No one has a right to eat whatever they fancy.

It's like saying it's ok to steal a Lamborghini because you can only afford to drive an old Escort. No one in their right mind would think that's acceptable.

People saying it's fine are part of the problem. Not everyone is entitled to have whatever they fancy.

Yes, I could. But if I was on my uppers and couldn’t afford to eat unless I stole, I personally wouldn’t feel so entitled as to lift a bit of fillet steak. I’d probably set my sights a bit lower. What happens when I fancy caviar, or a lobster?

Are you stupid? Of course individuals stealing from supermarkets affects everyone, because the prices rise to cover the losses due to theft.

Do you know anything about pricing models and how prices are calculated? There is always an element to cover losses from theft.

@ExOptimist there was a very patronising PP saying the same thing when a simple google would confirm that it does add on average £150 pa to shopping bills and theft is not a drop in the ocean either as another PP said, it’s actually approx 2 billion pounds

It's the same principle though. Stealing because you want something that you can't afford.
If people are brought up to think that's ok then they really are scum. They are utterly despicable low lives with no decency or integrity.
Maybe should have worked harder at school, gone to university, got a good job then you could afford what you want.

A simple google does not confirm this. Google has no idea what overhead costs, direct costs and profit margin is for supermarket products. They are commercially sensitive and not released.

but let’s just state the obvious- you realise product pricing is largely driven by what the customer will pay don’t you? And you also realise that stock is written off for a wide variety of reasons, not just theft (and even then, the theft could come in any part of the supply chain)

Of course it's not that simple, but to deny that pricing models include any element for losses due to theft is utterly wrong, and if you actually do know anything about pricing you would agree.

Of course university doesn't mean nothing. I doubt that university educated people feature highly in the numbers of shoplifters. They also don't feature highly in the numbers of people living in poverty. That's the great thing about education, it opens doors to a better life.

the answer entirely depends on the product, obviously.

ive just finished watching a talk from a clothes buyer. She estimates volume ordered and unit cost of Zara shoes. Most were sold for between £50-80 and the unit cost was £4-16 per pair.

so say Zara retail shoes at £79.99 and buy them for £12- then add £8 on for overheads/ distribution, including stock write off. Profit £59.99 per pair. Do you really think they add 0.5p/1p/2p to the sales price when theft increases? 🤨

It would only take a minute. I believe in the law and that theft is wrong and that people who steal should be punished.
There are several judges in my family so of course I believe in moral and legal behaviour.

I like prawns id like to munch the most expensive but buy the cheapest that's my price point.
And if I couldn't afford that it would be a packet of skips.😁

Theft has always been a problem. Before modern courts people were sent to the Colonies for theft, or executed. It is the human nature or desperation of some people. From the start of time it has gone on and only the punishment has changed. Nothing will stop it. We have to cope with the consequences.

That Is actually how most would-be shoplifters are apprehended and searched, tip offs from shoppers.

CCTV might work as a deterrent or to piece together repeat behaviour but on its own, it’s unlikely to do much because it’s mostly watched in retrospect unless security gets a very clear view of an actual concealment I don’t think it does much. And then of course it’s not actually stealing until you attempt to leave without paying.
