What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

  • U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
  • Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

Puff the magic dragon.

I'm not even joking. Makes me cry every single time. Poor, poor lonely Puff.

I just looked up the lyrics, I am more depressed than I’ve ever been in my life 😩

I'm so sorry! I literally cannot get through it without tears in my eyes as a minimum.

I know you were probably looking for more serious songs than Puff, but it's so sad!

You have been loved - George Michael. His voice is exquisite and its such a sad and beautiful tribute to his lost love.

The theme from Bright Eyes and the one about 'someone left the cake out in the rain'.

Honestly its like grief. Not sure why.

I can’t bear to listen to it, it makes me cry as well, it’s so sad. There are two other songs which make me weep because I relate them to the loss of my darling dog, Stay by East 17 and You are my Sunshine 😢

My immortal by Evanescence

SirChenjins · 16/07/2026 22:40

Definitely Puff the Magic Dragon, and Seasons in the Sun - both are proper sob-along songs.

Alarae · 16/07/2026 22:42

Cancer - My Chemical Romance
Say Something - Pentatonix

I loved the 10cc song until the whispered ‘boys don’t cry’ version freaked me out

I agree with a lot of these but would add “struggle” by the Lathums as a modern one.

I have no idea if it is about a parent or lover or friend but it makes me think of my (mostly absent) dad
