I don’t think the suspected neighbour with the blaring tv has aircon, though, because their back door is wide open and I think it’s coming from there.

DH said that this afternoon. When the heatwave started all you could hear was kids out playing and smell BBQ's. The longer it's gone on the less there are.

The ice cream van has just been round and at first I thought: he must be doing a roaring trade this year. But then there were no excited kids running about yelling for ice cream (and this area is packed with families) so even they’re probably bored with ice cream by now!

Ice creams are expensive. Paid 6.50 for two 99s the other day and not even that nice really.

Wow, that is expensive. And to think they were called 99s cos they used to cost 99p!

I haven’t watched tv since that lovely grey week somewhere back in June. All watching is now iPad streaming in whichever room is the coolest (none of them).

It was only an ice cream take away bar too, nothing fancy and they didn’t even give me a serviette to hold it with.

It’s been that long since I’ve had an ice cream from a van, I still remember Mr Whippy.

Most people can get headphones for their TV, you have to have a TV older than mine in order to be unable to do that!

We are at the stage where it is all right outside now at 7:30. But the flat won't cool down. Fortunately, I'm not surprised because I knew it wouldn't cool down in the flat until October.

I am pleased to say that in a half an hour stroll I walked past several people complaining about the heat.

It’s so lovely being able to moan and whinge on this thread! It’s been hell and I it’s nice to know I’m not alone in feeling twitchy about it all.
One up side is the washing gets dry quickly , but oddly today it took a lot longer to dry!

Quite. Is there any way you can change the appointment? I have to do these gas checks too for my HA and they usually allow at least one appt change.

I can’t sit in that living room and certainly not with headphones. I wish my neighbour would get fucking headphones as they’re the ones blaring their telly so the whole neighbourhood can hear.

We are capped so all they need to do is check we still are but im wary after what happened two years ago

Heres what happened after the summer 2024 gas safety check They came and checked that we were still capped. Contractor asked me to move stuff out of the way of the boiler despite the fact that we are capped. You cant get any safer than that. I refused because it was bloody hot and not neccessary.
A week later i get a letter saying that i denied them entry!!! Then i get another letter saying that HO wants to visit because of the state of the flat id let the housework go because of the heat. Well i thought i had denied them entry😑
Now thats HUGE gaslighting.
HO comes round in the August during another heatwave with her assistant and i kept them here as long as possible I really wanted them to feel the benefit of this sauna. We were told to just use a fan and open a window. Last years check went ok. THIS years check is 10th August.
Oh and the reason the contractor wanted to take a photo of my boiler despite the fact we are capped?
Because they have to do this to prove they have been inside because they tell so many lies about not gaining entry. In fact my HA were on Channel 4s Dispatches back in 2019 and these lies were exposed on there.

Do they require you to have the heating on to do them? I'm in a housing association flat and I've never needed to put the heating on as part of the inspection.

They check the gas meter and check for any leaks where it enters the flat, then do the same with the boiler - make sure it's working correctly, again that there are no leaks,. t's firing up ok, that the pressure is fine etc then they check my gas hob is working and doing the safety cut off properly and finally check the carbon monoxide and fire alarms are working. Actually the letter I usually gets says the opposite, to not really use the boiler for a couple of hours before the inspection.

Having tidied up my research on all the places I can hang around in, actually I was wrong about some of them anyway. I'm really short of places to go.

It's going to be a very long month - just really hoping it's just that one month

lord knows what I'm going to do next summer but I am clinging to the statistical aberration.

Here they usually check the meter, the boiler and run the hot tap for a while. Then some stick the heating on to check it but not always.

I hate the intrusion more than anything. Not as bad as the electricity check which happens every 5 years. They go in every room and fiddle with everything. I detest it.

Oh yes, washing drying quickly is about one of the only benefits that I DONT mind - my laundry is literally bone dry within 24 hours, if that....which is great if you've had a big clean and got loads of bedding, towels etc to get laundered....it's making it very easy to keep on top of!

I agree with this. But I live in a road with a primary school at the end and the ice cream van is there from 2.10 in the afternoon from about half way through February till November grrrr (this is probably for a different tread really)! But he hasn’t been here since the school shut for the summer holidays!

I would have welcomed an ice cream on at least a couple of occasions since then ….

I had a weird double plug socket where only one worked and if you put anything in the other then it tripped the whole socket - I had one of these checks a couple of years ago and it was very handy to have as it wasn't a major issue, but a bit niggly/inconvenient at times and thankfully a very simple fix for them to sort out...I probably wouldn't have bothered my HA about it otherwise.

You hear about people renting houses or flats that haven't had the electrics checked in donkey's years and then something trips or blows up suddenly....I'd rather be safe then sorry, personally 🥴

Yep and all about health and safety while its ok for us to sweat our guts out like this.
