Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

Plenty of people still drive cars without air con. The horror!

IamSmarticus · 25/06/2026 17:56

Yes, I remember peeling myself off the car seats. The same car that you had to pull the choke out in order to start it in the morning, and you had to wind the windows down yourself!

Sirzy · 25/06/2026 17:56

Sounds rather like sitting on my leather sofa today unless I put a blanket down!

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 25/06/2026 17:59

Do you remember when you got rectangular shaped, wrapped blocks of ice cream and rectangular cones?
Kind of like a choc ice without the chocolate.

BiggyJ · 25/06/2026 18:08

Yes @Cantthinkofanewusernameffs
And the ice cream was actually creamy, not just reconstituted air!

Do you remember when there were only 3 TV channels?

I had completely forgotten about those!

And in the case of our family car, the front seat passenger had to hold the driver’s door closed by hanging onto the end of a piece of wire tied to the door handle and passing across the driver’s lap. 😆

We used to travel across France to Italy to my grandparents house in Tuscany, in a Ford Cortina. Mum, Dad, 4 kids, holiday clothes and camping equipment all somehow fitted in. No seatbelts were fitted in the back and I remember sitting on sleeping bags.

Chestecoffthatcarriedheroff · 25/06/2026 18:55

Do you remember when you had to deal with not only the plastic seats, and no air con, but also your parent smoking whilst they were driving, and the fag ash that would often blow into the back seat.

I loved them!

This brings back memories! We would visit dfs parents who were a 5 hour drive away and we would lie down in the back of the Passat estate with our blankets, watching the motorway lights overhead.

Fgfgfg · 25/06/2026 18:59

At least if your legs were stuck to the seat you weren't sliding all over the place.

Everygoodnameisgone · 25/06/2026 19:00

I remember the smell of hot cars in the 70s (probably '76). I hated it, guess it was hot plastic.

IamSmarticus · 25/06/2026 19:02

Do you remember when the TV programmes used to end at 11pm ish, and the screen faded away to black with a little white dot on the middle.

Ilovemychocolate · 25/06/2026 19:05

Do you remember getting 10p a week for pocket money, and spending absolutely ages choosing the sweets which would make up your 10p mix, black jacks and fruit salads were half a pence each 😁

HollywentLightly · 25/06/2026 19:05

I'd forgotten about rectangular cones! DH never bloody shuts up about growing up rurally in 3 channel land (I was a townie with 5). There were four of us across the back of whatever car and we'd fight over standing behind mum or sitting on the hump in the middle of the floor. At one stage we had a hatch back corolla and we took some friends to the seaside, three of us sitting in the actual boot (parcel shelf removed for good order).

DelphiniumBlue · 25/06/2026 19:06

I remember doing hand signals because not all cars had working indicators on both sides. My mum had a car where the driver would put their right hand out of the window and pull down an indicator from the roof. If you wanted to turn left, you did anticlockwise circles with you arm out of the window.

Learned more about maths and budgeting than in school!

I sound like I'm your vintage OP, and am absolutely with you on the ice cream front.

People keep telling me to try this or that ice cream, but the stuff you buy in the supermarket always seems to be this soft scoop stuff that has a weird texture, almost like frozen mousse. I hate it.

We were at a restaurant the other day and had some lovely ice cream so we asked who made it. It was Kelly's, but it was different from the Kelly's you buy in the supermarket. Creamy like all ice cream used to be.

Looks like I'll just have to get the ice cream maker out.

Flicitytricity · 25/06/2026 19:15

Don't pass out here, but I remember sitting on my dads knee when he drove the car, and taking over the steering wheel while he lit his fag😵‍💫
I remember buying a milky way for 3d on the way to school (1.5p for you young folk)😆
I remember having a stand off with my teacher over drinking milk that had been stored by the classroom radiator. I won, in that i didn't drink it, but lost because I had my hand slapped by the Headteacher for disobedience.
But I won overall, because I was banned from being allowed a bottle of milk. Joy☺️
I remember so many happy memories of years gone by😁

Do you remember when you answered your phone by saying your phone number, like village ###?

I told some of my younger work colleagues this and they looked at me like I had two heads.

MassOfInterstellarGas · 25/06/2026 19:25

@RichardMarxisinnocent, even as I wrote that, I thought, OK, that does seem weird now. I still remember our phone number!

Yes. Real flavour.

I do remember three channels. I also remember Channel 4 starting. I think they showed a short nature video (I vaguely remember hares or rabbits) and then Countdown.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/06/2026 19:26

Remember phoning Dial a Disc to listen to a chart song over the phone?
