Have you ever been upset by something said to you on MN?

I’m a frequent name changer but I’ve been around for a few years. I deleted an earlier account after I somehow provoked a pile-on when I started a tongue-in-cheek thread about ketchup on roast dinners (of all things). Some of the comments were beyond brutal - I could laugh some of them off but others were really below the belt. Over ketchup!! 😂

In the end, I decided I was too thin skinned for the rigours of MN and I took a break until I decided to dip my toe back in MN waters again. I’m much more cautious now and tend to not start threads but I’m curious as to whether anyone else has felt upset at comments a stranger has posted at them online? Are you able to shrug it off or do you take it a bit more personally? This isn’t meant to be ‘oh, isn’t MN a horrible place’ discussion (I don’t think it is) but just me wondering if others get upset if you’re on the receiving end of spiky comments or if you’re able to just quickly dismiss it?

I have name changed since, but I used to have a self-deprecating username. Someone made a comment like "your username is appropriate" when I commented on a thread that was a complete pile on that I actually agreed with the OP. It really stung 😆

I think I was so told to get a grip or something by MN royalty as well, I was stung, STUNG I tell you! Can't remember what the thread was about but I scroll right past all their responses now which I'm sure would be devastating to them. 😆

I have a life quandary at the moment which is breaking my heart, and I have mentally typed out a post many times but decided against it - guaranteed I'd be made to feel worse than I already do, it's not worth it. Chat GPT may well blow smoke up my arse but at least it's balanced and civil.

not upset but really surprised and rude people are prepared to be whilst pretending to reasonable and polite.

5128gap · 16/08/2026 20:42

The only posters who've been personally unpleasant to me are those for whom I have zero respect and think are not very bright/trolls/horrible people. So I'd actually be more upset if they were positive, as I'd clearly have given the wrong impression.

I have seen a lot of threads in 'relationships' recently which have seemed like a huge pile-on and I have felt sorry for the OP. People don't seem to have much in the means of critical thinking, and jump to conclusions a lot. I am sure it didn't used to be like this on here.

I once described the effects PTSD had on me, and how I reacted to a trigger (whichbis to remove myself from thd situation)

I was told I ahould stay at home and not go out at all if I could react like that to men in public.

Who the heck are MN Royalty?
I treat everyone the same...if they are rude they will get it back, if they are nice, even if they dont agree with a word I say, I am nice back.

I have been on forums where three or four mean girls band together and think they are Queen Bees...tbh, I haven't noticed that here.

I do remember one of my first threads here was about Carol Vorderman in AIBU....that was fun.😆

I was told I should not be allowed out without a carer, because I would not like a stranger sitting at my table in a cafe.

it didn’t upset me. But a thread I posted years ago gave me a proper WTF and was my realisation that anyone can use Mumsnet and anyone does…..

Basically I’d gone on holiday for a week and a trusted neighbour/good friend had agreed to feed the hamster and water the one unkillable plant I had back then. The neighbour helped himself to my toilet rolls, the contents of my fridge and some cash I’d left on the radiator (50p - but thankfully he didn’t know I had a fairly large stash of cash elsewhere in the house). One poster was insistent the whole thing hinged on whether I had brought him back a gift - if I hadn’t, it was fine for him to have stolen from me. It started a war.

I only post for factual help now!

Your neighbour did what?! Shock

When the race riots happened in Belfast in June this year I got told off over and over for not going out to riot.

According to PP I was utterly wrong in saying that the rioters were all paramilitary scumbags spoiling for some stone throwing fun with the police and were using any excuse to cause trouble.

They would be perfectly happy to go out and riot for their rights over illegal immigrants being in the UK.

I was furious and more than that just disgusted at the levels of racism towards immigrants. Then also lack of understanding of how NI works.

Some seriously snippy bitches on disability threads too.

CurlewKate · 21/08/2026 16:53

No. Because I never say anything on here that I don’t think is true when I post it.
