Have you ever been upset by something said to you on MN?

I’m a frequent name changer but I’ve been around for a few years. I deleted an earlier account after I somehow provoked a pile-on when I started a tongue-in-cheek thread about ketchup on roast dinners (of all things). Some of the comments were beyond brutal - I could laugh some of them off but others were really below the belt. Over ketchup!! 😂

In the end, I decided I was too thin skinned for the rigours of MN and I took a break until I decided to dip my toe back in MN waters again. I’m much more cautious now and tend to not start threads but I’m curious as to whether anyone else has felt upset at comments a stranger has posted at them online? Are you able to shrug it off or do you take it a bit more personally? This isn’t meant to be ‘oh, isn’t MN a horrible place’ discussion (I don’t think it is) but just me wondering if others get upset if you’re on the receiving end of spiky comments or if you’re able to just quickly dismiss it?

The thing I find most upsetting is the zealous, almost gleeful advocation of punishment. Some MNers love to show off how good they are at dishing out strict consequences to people who misbehave - whether it's partners, children, neighbours, colleagues, even hairdressers or teachers who have stepped out of line. It's like they're competing to show off how TOUGH and UNCOMPROMISING they are. If you dare to advocate going easy on someone and showing compassion, you're branded a "wet lettuce".

Really it's when this happens on threads about children that it bothers me the most.

I'm with you on that, the vitriol towards teenagers and children, esp if female, is shocking.

Although I notice if an OP says I did X Z and it upset A Man who was then nasty/rude/violent, then OP is always in the wrong and moreover must have provoked them. It's da rules.

When I started a thread about ketchup on roast dinners, it was meant to be light-hearted. Was saying how I’d cooked a big roast and a guest had asked for condiments and basically squirted ketchup and mayonaise all over my lush rosemary roasties and herby chicken. 😂

Oh my - I got tormented! Was called a sanctimonious bitch, stuck up cow…all sorts. Part of me did think the thread had been invaded by trolls because the responses were so extreme - but I did genuinely feel really upset by it. As others have said, it’s random strangers on the internet so it shouldn’t really have an impact - but for me, sometimes it does.

I honestly believe there are three or four posters who go on threads to bully the posters just for entertainment. They PM each other to give each other a heads up on which threads to go on. It’s ruining the whole site. I have no idea why Mumsnet doesn’t ban them.

I think it’s the opposite. Men and boys get a harder time on MN and posters are typically more supportive of women and girls.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/08/2026 16:36

The only time I've ever been genuinely upset (and I've been on here 17 years...) was when someone disagreed with me on the subject of what to do with the lack of support a friends daughter was receiving through school with her autism (The dickhead decided I was too demanding of teachers or some shit) and they dragged up multiple old threads of mine and announced that it was lucky I had had multiple miscarriages and an infertility diagnosis because I would be a teachers worse nightmare. I still see her around, her life looks shit, i'm fine with that tbh

Costemp · 16/08/2026 16:41

I posted shortly after my mum died unexpectedly. Most were supportive, but my god some people get off on kicking someone when they’re down.

BEAchDays2 · 16/08/2026 17:08

No, but something I said.
Someone had lost their little dog Maud because their son left the gate open. I’d heard a few story like that and was mean and said I hoped they didn’t get another dog.
I felt awful afterwards but somehow lost their thread and couldn’t apologise. Still feel awful, and hope they are okay.

Yeah, Mumsnet is really not the supportive community it pretends to be! I’ve been called all sorts on here, stupid, no common sense, to the even more personal about fertility treatments shouldn’t be funded by the nhs which stung when I needed fertility support! Awful.

even more personal about fertility treatments shouldn’t be funded by the NHS which stung when I needed fertility support!

I hope things turned out well for you. What you wrote here is a great example of how wires get crossed and feelings hurt. "Fertility treatments shouldn’t be funded by the NHS" is a political opinion. It's not a personal attack.

I can certainly understand how it felt personal, and it was very insensitive to introduce this opinion if you were talking about your personal struggle with infertility.

I didn't see your thread, though. For instance, if you were fighting for extra rounds of NHS treatment, someone's view that it shouldn't be publicly funded would come into play as an argument against it. We're all inclined to think ourselves and our own loved ones first, but sane adults can also take a mental step back to acknowledge wider issues.

Clydebuilt · 16/08/2026 17:41

No, I care not a jot! They’re a bunch of strangers on the internet and don’t know me at all! Their opinion of me doesn’t matter in the least!

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPieceJust FYI, and this is something I won’t regret. You mean nothing to
me, and your remark means nothing to me. I have no interest in what you think of me or what you say to me.

It takes a lot to be able to own up to a misstep, and I respect you for trying to apologise. Hope this doesn't become a pile on.

It was not a thread about that, and it was a very personal attack, trust me. I’d rather not relive it word by word… it wasn’t even appropriate to the thread, things got ugly.

Thanks @dudsvilleThe beggar was losing the thread! So no chance to edit / apologise. Maybe they’ll see it here!

Yes, when I naively used to ask questions on AIBU that I genuinely wanted advice on. Thankfully I grew out of that and come on here more as a casual observer of human nature and to chat about flippant stuff like what I’m doing at the weekend and what I’m having for dinner.

She's clearly already reflected so doesn't need to be sworn at.

Someone accused me of lying once. It was in the context of whether an adopted child can be as loved as a biological child. The obnoxious person said that was impossible and if I said otherwise, I was lying. I should have just ignored such utter nonsense, but it upset me nonetheless.

More recently, I had a literal "How very dare you" reaction in response to one of my posts. That just made me laugh. 😂

I remember this, the same poster spent about six weeks sending me extremely abusive private messages about adoption, completely bizarre behaviour.

No.

I can’t muster a shit on what anyone thinks of me. Let alone a stranger on a forum who wouldn’t say a word to my face.

This.

Sometimes I even feel pity for keyboard warriors who are so brave online.
Having said that, I think this forum is quite tame compared to others I have been on in the past.

Didimum · 16/08/2026 18:54

Annoyed for 10-15 minutes, but not upset.

Hepzibar · 16/08/2026 19:04

I got told to ‘grow up’ by a member of the Mumsnet Royalty. I was wounded. This was years ago - they don’t exist anymore or at least I don’t think they do ….?

Fearsomelycomely · 15/08/2026 23:47

I was called a twat when I posted that I’d told a man to clear up after his dog. I was a bit offended.

Sorry, but that made me laugh it's so ridiculous.😆

I think, and I'm sure many will disagree, but the way posters can change their usernames willy nilly encourages some to be nasty.
Forums where the same usernames are always used seem to create a friendlier environment; posters know who to avoid, who they have had pleasant conversations with etc....as it is, anyone can be anyone.

That’s awful. How dare you stay alive! Boomers do get a very bad rap on here.
