How is Ariana Grande allowed to keep going?

She looks like she’s at death’s door with anorexia and yet she’s just kicked off a world tour.

I thought we were living in more enlightened times now and that celebrities’ ill health wouldn’t be enabled like this. If she went to any hospital she’d get admitted for malnutrition.

Whatever is going on with Kate, she has good arm muscle, suggesting that although extremely lean to the point I have wondered, she has not lost the muscle there but has built it back. Ariana is very petite and has (IMO) lost a huge amount of muscle as her look is 'frail' and not thin with muscle. That's what would concern me, but then, if she sings and dances all night she must just be weighing enough to keep going, but I also wouldn't be surprised if there was a medical emergency at some point in the next few years- what often happens is they keep going a few years like this, living off energy, adrenaline and being young, but there is often a reckoning. That said, I knew a woman in her fifties with a long-term eating disorder who walked excessively every day and ate almost nothing and she survived long-term, including doing a fairly demanding job. People are often very good at keeping themselves too thin but not enough to cause full bodily breakdown and avoid sectioning as well. I've seen them do it, they are at the lowest possible kg before the state will intervene (in the UK) and they just keep that going for long time periods.

She was emaciated ever since she got married. The images of her below are from her 2011 Canada tour. She never looked like this before she married William. Being globally famous has obviously taken its toll on her. She is absolutely anorexic and I really feel for her. It's a terrible illness.

She is very slim, but that doesn’t make someone anorexic, she is long, lean and athletic.

These definitely are not the legs of an emaciated anorexic.

A lot of anorexics are very good at managing their eating disorder- for years or even their whole lives, it’s not an enviable decline.

Look at people like Victoria Beckham or Rachel Zoe, zanna Robert’s Rossi etc… able to lift weights and live a full life, have children etc but very obviously and fairly openly managing their eating disorders at the same time. I would personally imagine Kate is in this group rather than Ariana’s.

These are old pictures- very, very old in the case of the shorts.

I have wondered exactly this, OP. One of my children has an eating disorder and when she's that underweight, she's on bedrest and wheelchair or, at best, driven everywhere. Also, the internal damage of being very underweight and then keeping going is immense, things like osteoporosis, damage to internal organs as well as malnutrition, risk of heart attack. I guess she has a team of doctors around her all the time monitoring these signs, that amount of exercise is also risky as your electrolytes can go crazy, but again, I guess they monitor her all day every day, supplement her, give her infusions, and on the stage she goes. It is deeply worrying.

Hollywood is full of unethical medical practitioners who will happily prescribe substances much much stronger than infusions and supplements for the right price. We only hear about them when something goes wrong, e.g. Matthew Perry or Michael Jackson. Obviously I have no idea what's happening in this particular case but the abuse of certain drugs under the supervision of a doctor is absolutely rife in some industries, and that would be an explanation of how someone who is visibly very unwell is still able to go on stage and perform.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/06/2026 10:29

She doesn’t look ill to me

Crocsarentslippers · 12/06/2026 10:30

I sadly think we will be hearing about her death soon if there isn't anyone that can intervene.

She carries the trauma of Manchester, and of ex partners that have taken their own life, and looks like she is addicted to weight loss pills.

Personally I don't like the relationship she has with Cynthia Erivo either, both look emaciated and at times Ariana looks like she is being smothered and controlled by Cynthia.

I hope I'm wrong, but she used to be such a great comic actress in ' Victorious' and ' Sam & Kat' , and showed this off again with a great performance in Wicked. It would be great to have that Ariana back

I hope young girls are not looking at her and thinking her body size is acceptable or inspirational.

Really?! I can only assume you're being sarcastic?
She is quite obviously and literally skin and bone at this point! I'm not one to comment on people's bodies as a rule, but she quite clearly isn't a healthy weight for someone who has a rather physically demanding job (dancing and singing on stage for hours at a time).

fashionqueen0123 · 12/06/2026 10:33

I just looked at her instagram pics and her photos are scary, goodness I had no idea she looked like this now.

I am a slim person ( I haven't checked my bmi for a while but the only time it was 'normal' was when I was pregnant, and now I'm in my 40s and put a few pounds on! Before that it was always around 18 and I was about a size 8-10, when I was pregnant it must have been about 23 maybe and I went up to a size 12/14) but I can recognise the way she looks is not normal at all.

The photo of her back is really worrying.

Backedoffhackedoff · 12/06/2026 10:36

If anyone saw the Robbie Williams documentary, he did one of his last tours with a terrible back injury- doctors were brought in and prescribed him massive amounts of highly addictive painkillers knowing he was a recovering drug addict. There is footage of his assistant trying to stop the doctor and ask Robbie to reconsider but he refuses

the reason he did it is he would lose so much money if he cancelled the tour because he was unable to perform, and I mean bankrupcy levels of money even for someone as rich as Robbie.

of course. He relapsed and was back on drugs after that.

Like so many in that industry. Karen Carpenter, Lena Zavaroni, Britney Spears, beset by illness, anorexia or mental illness, is it the industry itself, the pressures from management and entourage, demands from fans who expect them to perform, or personal demons they bring with them. It is painful to watch though.

You only need to read Britney's book to see the horror that goes on.

Someone responsible in nature needs to take her off this tour. I wonder what her family is thinking. I don't know if she is close to them.

Florally · 12/06/2026 10:41

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 11/06/2026 19:04

It’s another Karen Carpenter situation (except Karen was significantly more talented).

have you heard Arianna sing? She has an amazing voice.

Well the photos the other poster posted are from 2011 claiming she was emaciated. While she is really slim she certainly is not emaciated (going by her biceps).

The photo of her in shorts and stripy top is from August 2022
The red dress is from 2023.

There are pap photos of Catherine in a bikini on her honeymoon in the Seychelles and she has a long very, very narrow torso, very athletic and muscular.

I know some people think people are only slim because they have an ED, my mother law is one of them, she thinks if we don’t eat a huge second plate of dinner then we must be dieting. .

fartotheleftside · 11/06/2026 18:43

Family. Management. Record company. Her doctors. Friends. Even the bloody insurance company for this tour should have a vested interest in making sure she’s healthy.

basically anyone with a personal connection to her or who is currently making money off her.

she looks like she’s at the level of needing an involuntary hold for anorexia to me.

If you watch the dreadfully sad documentary about Avicii on Netflix, know about Amy Winehouse etc, the "Trusted" people around the performers - managers/family/record co etc - are all to often just focused on keeping the show on the road. It can be hugely exploitative and can come at great personal cost to these vulnerable people.

I’m not being sarcastic at all. Unless I’m looking at the wrong video from her show. Yes she’s thin but I wouldn’t say she looks ill. As someone who has been trying to lose weight for years but spent their teenage years being told they look anorexic I can only sympathise with her for this level of scrutiny. I’m not sure what posting on the internet does for her mental health

This worries me too. (Pretty much all you said, really.) Even now some people seem to think there's nothing wrong with her weight, which really does frighten me. As does the thought of girls and young women aspiring to this dangerous level of thinness and actually thinking it looks normal or even good. And I think you're quite right that she's on a dangerous path herself. It's so sad.

mumuseli · 12/06/2026 10:52

I get that eating disorders are complex (ie to do with control etc), but it just makes me so sad that people can get like this and not see how much better they looked at a healthier weight. Ariana is a stunning woman, and used to look so attractive (and she still could - I'm talking about her natural beauty, regardless of her age), but her look now is just concerning.

But on the other hand eating disorders are common particularly amongst women in the public eye, so your defence that very thin people can’t possibly have one is odd. It’s like skinny fan girling.

That’s not what I said, I said she does not look like an emaciated anorexic. On the other hand, Ariana Grande does look like an emaciated anorexic, poor her.

Skinny fan girling😂😂😂 crazy shite lol.

Avicii was similar, his documentary was so tragic, he was just pushed and pushed, using drugs and alcohol to keep going.

She looks severely anorexic and I do worry about the impact on her young female fanbase. Hopefully her loved ones are intervening and trying to help. But unfortunately she is a grown woman and nobody can make any decisions for her, whether that's (not) eating or touring.

I've got two friends with (undiagnosed) EDs in their 60s now and both have severe osteoporosis and are constantly breaking bones. One has so much metal in her body now that she's practically a bionic woman. But they're both functioning anorexics and unlikely to change now. Neither of them look nearly as severe as Ariana though.
