Belfast attack

Greenwitchart · 09/06/2026 17:51

I can see that the previous thread on the topic is full so I am starting a new one to continue the discussion.

The points I wanted to say as someone who immigrated to the UK over 30 years ago:

  • This is a horrific attack and everyone's thoughts should be with the victim and his loved one.
  • However, I do think that we have an issue with some people getting into the country whether legally or illegally who simply don't have the same values as the majority of the population and are not able to follow its laws and customs.
  • The asylum and immigration system needs a serious overall and to do more to stop men who are a potential danger to society because of their beliefs/culture/failure to integrate getting through the system and ending up committing violent acts. Some people destroy their documents and checks can only go so far when it is hard to verify claims and the chaotic countries they come from does not have reliable records that can be accessed . There are many peaceful and genuine asylum seekers who just want a safe place to live in peace but we seem to be getting in too many angry, violent men who abuse the system and that has to stop.
  • I don't want to share the streets with people who have no respect for women and girls, are religious fanatics to the point of extremism or show hate towards gay people and bring violence in general.
  • Having people from different cultures coming in is fine as long as they integrate well and take on the values of the country they live in. It does not work if they just live parallel lives and fail to follow the law of the land.

I agree with every word of that.

JustStopItNora · 09/06/2026 17:54

As an immigrant who had to jump through every damned hoop 22 years ago I agree with every word.

FrankieMcGrath · 09/06/2026 17:55

I agree with every word also.

LadyLooo · 09/06/2026 17:56

I agree too and I think anyone who doesn't is quite weird.

JustStopItNora · 09/06/2026 17:56

And i also truly believe that we, in the West should stop being so apologetic about Western values. Western values of equality, tolerance, respect. Those values are to be cherished and protected. And there is a whole segment of society that do not believe in this and I believe they have no place here.

Indeed!

I became a British National as well years ago, which I am really grateful for, and did everything by the book.

Absolutely!

Also there seem to be no jobs for our kids so not understanding why we need migrants to fill jobs?

Marmalademorning · 09/06/2026 18:02

Thanks for continuing the previous thread OP. This attack has left me feeling very shaken that this kind of thing is happening on our streets this day and age. The Home office has a duty to ensure that the people they are granting asylum to don’t pose a risk to people who already live here. They certainly failed in this case.

Ginnyweasleyswand · 09/06/2026 18:09

Well said OP.

Anyone who has destroyed their documentation won't have a good reason for doing so whether it's criminality or just not being eligible for asylum. Anyone without documents should not be allowed to enter at all and should not be allowed to claim asylum.

I am married to a legal immigrant and have been an immigrant in two other countries. Both times by the book, jumped through all the hoops, had to prove I wasn't a threat before I was allowed to go.

So sick of this situation where these men are prioritized over public safety. One attack like this, one death (RIP Rhiannon Whyte) is one too many.

5MinuteArgument · 09/06/2026 18:13

Yes, we're letting far too many people in. If we can't check them, either because they come from countries with inadequate record systems, or because they've chucked their documents away, then we shouldn't let them in. They should automatically be refused and all processing should happen off shore.

It's getting ridiculous now with attacks by asylum seekers / refugees / people still here after having their claim rejected. It's really ridiculous and I'm so sick of it.

PeachOctopus · 09/06/2026 18:14

The horror on our streets is becoming undeniable at this point.
Of course any country that does not allow background checks on its citizens we should not allow in, as the risks are not worth it.
One of my parents was an immigrant who contributed to the country, but now there are no safeguards and we are called racist if we question immigration policy.

StasisMom · 09/06/2026 18:14

Another in agreement.

BurnoutBee · 09/06/2026 18:14

Ahh who cares, it’s not terrorism after all!!! FML

5MinuteArgument · 09/06/2026 18:15

This scumbag was granted leave to remain in Northern Ireland. In God's name, why?

BurnoutBee · 09/06/2026 18:16

@5MinuteArgument

so someone didn’t get called RACIST

OnlyfeckinTuesday · 09/06/2026 18:17

All of you who are "I was an immigrant xx years ago" are all for pulling up the drawbridge behind you. Do you think that people see a difference between you and "new" immigrants because it's very unlikely.

This guy had leave to remain and will have gone through the Home Office process to get it. You're just shit stirring with your rhetoric.

The Home Office process is not fit for purpose if it's letting in murderers and rapists. I know it's not possible to tell if they're murderers and rapists. In which case, keep them out.

Who said he was either. Do you know something everyone else doesn't.

He attempted to murder someone on the streets of Belfast, at least I assume that was his intention.

Seconded.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/06/2026 18:38

yes, there's always been immigration to the UK - but those arriving in recent years from places like Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan etc are a world away from those who came over as part of the windrush generation. Too many people have come to the UK with never any intention of integrating.

Msmfailedusbad · 09/06/2026 18:40

The suicidal empaths will be along in a minute today any of the following - nothing to see here / accuse posters as racist/ not terror related / trying to police peoples language and feelings in the typical two tier way like they did with Henry Nowac. It’s like bingo this week on here.
I am fed up
I am scared , now and for our shared future
I am angry - for the victim ,for his family and friends , for the witnesses , for my community , my country and for my children.
We didn’t ask for this .

Totally agree with the OP and this comment. I'm absolutely shocked by this appalling attack - and deeply disturbed by those finding excuses for this violent perpetrator.
