What's the weirdest thing your pet is scared of?

My friend's dog is terrified of cardboard boxes but completely ignores thunderstorms 😅

Pets can be so strange sometimes.

What's the weirdest thing your dog or cat is scared of?

Vacuum cleaners? Bananas? Plastic bags? Random household objects?

I'd love to hear some funny stories.

Edited to ask if you’re writing an article?

Those wobbly signs outside shops, coffee shops etc. 😆 she also refused to walk past a flowerbox hung on a fence once.

Toast.

She'll hide in a corner, trembling. Or if the door is open, she'll hide under a bush in the garden.

flicking a sheet or sofa cushion with your finger. I did it once to flick something off and my dog jumped off and ran away. Further testing has confirmed that yes indeed he is terrified of the noise even if it’s nowhere near him

we had a dog who had a brain infection as a puppy and it left her with cognitive issues. She was petrified if you moved your legs under the bedclothes if she was on the bed. I spent ages showing her my leg moving about.. here’s my leg on top of the covers, here’s my leg now under the covers. She never twigged it was the same leg and not some weird hidden monster.

she was also scared of her own farts.

Our 13 yr old cat....Everything, now he's getting older. If you carry anything through the house (baking tray, carrier bag, house plant, DH in a bobble hat) he goes all goggly eyed and hides.

He used to be so robust, but he's scared of his own shadow these days. It's a bit sad tbh.

Thunder storms though - yeah, they're fine....

DM's dog is terrified of bridges over roads. I guess it's not that weird, because he can see the cars coming, but his little doggy brain hasn't worked out that he's safely above them.

No article 😄
Just genuinely curious. My friend's dog is scared of cardboard boxes but couldn't care less about thunderstorms, which made me wonder what other strange pet fears people have.

The flowerbox got me
Pets really do seem to invent their own rules about what's dangerous and what isn't.

I just thought of something else. Jeeps. There is one parked outside a house she refuses to walk past. I didn't understand and casually thought there must be a Bad Person or energy there but then there was a jeep parked on another street and she did the same thing.

Walking under bridges (on the canal) while on a lead....off the lead she's unfazed by them.

Toast 😂 I genuinely wasn't expecting that answer. Pets really are wonderfully weird sometimes.

Inflatables like big Santa's blown up outside around Christmas. If it wasn't for this I could genuinely say she is truly fearless.

Poor dog
It's amazing how they can be completely fine with loud everyday noises but then decide one tiny sound is absolutely terrifying.

Yep - he’s fine with fireworks and storms

Skin!

She will not sit on my or touch any part of me unless it’s covered with clothing.
Other than rubbing her face against my nose.

She also loves bleach and pears…

Poor old guy ❤️
It's sad seeing them become more cautious as they get older. Funny how thunderstorms don't bother him though.

My old spaniel couldn’t care less about storms or fireworks but the window cleaner had him jumping into my arms shaking. Current spaniel is scared of certain men - can’t decide why only some and not others but I’m wondering if she’s seeing something I’m not.

Cooked spaghetti….. my cat.

That's actually quite understandable 😅
From his point of view it probably looks like he's walking over a giant hole with cars underneath.

My dog was scared of a rose yesterday. It had newly opened from the last time she was in the garden and she could see it waving in the breeze so bravely tried to stalk it but when she got close it got too much for her so she backed away growling - a Labrador cross 🙄😂she's also terrified if I have a bath which is a regular occurrence - she runs into the bathroom and tries to rescue me but if a drop of water touches her she turns and runs

thecatdidit · Yesterday 13:19

My little dog is frightened to walk on flooring in shops or community halls, service stations etc. Not afraid of fireworks or thunder.

Sgtmajormummy · Yesterday 13:20

Men in headgear, especially motorbike helmets.
I think he has the same reaction as I used to do with the Cybermen (shudder).

Entangledlife · Yesterday 13:20

She's also terrified of one of my friends. She's ok with men in general but this one she will bark and growl and run in big circles round him but won't come anywhere near him (unless he has a treat in his hand then she will deign to take it before backing away) The friend is the most gentle soul and would do anything to help out an animal in trouble, I have no idea what's going on there.

whirlyhead · Yesterday 13:21

I have a big daft lump of a cat who is petrified of his sister. Who is about 20% of his size. She hisses at him and you don't see him for dust.

She is quite scary though.
