What's the weirdest thing your pet is scared of?

My friend's dog is terrified of cardboard boxes but completely ignores thunderstorms 😅

Pets can be so strange sometimes.

What's the weirdest thing your dog or cat is scared of?

Vacuum cleaners? Bananas? Plastic bags? Random household objects?

I'd love to hear some funny stories.

Edited to ask if you’re writing an article?

Those wobbly signs outside shops, coffee shops etc. 😆 she also refused to walk past a flowerbox hung on a fence once.

SpanielsGalore · 01/06/2026 12:59

Toast.

She'll hide in a corner, trembling. Or if the door is open, she'll hide under a bush in the garden.

BeardySchnauzer · 01/06/2026 13:00

flicking a sheet or sofa cushion with your finger. I did it once to flick something off and my dog jumped off and ran away. Further testing has confirmed that yes indeed he is terrified of the noise even if it’s nowhere near him

StillFeelingTired · 01/06/2026 13:02

we had a dog who had a brain infection as a puppy and it left her with cognitive issues. She was petrified if you moved your legs under the bedclothes if she was on the bed. I spent ages showing her my leg moving about.. here’s my leg on top of the covers, here’s my leg now under the covers. She never twigged it was the same leg and not some weird hidden monster.

she was also scared of her own farts.

Our 13 yr old cat....Everything, now he's getting older. If you carry anything through the house (baking tray, carrier bag, house plant, DH in a bobble hat) he goes all goggly eyed and hides.

He used to be so robust, but he's scared of his own shadow these days. It's a bit sad tbh.

Thunder storms though - yeah, they're fine....

CointreauVersial · 01/06/2026 13:04

DM's dog is terrified of bridges over roads. I guess it's not that weird, because he can see the cars coming, but his little doggy brain hasn't worked out that he's safely above them.

Tommalot · 01/06/2026 13:09

I just thought of something else. Jeeps. There is one parked outside a house she refuses to walk past. I didn't understand and casually thought there must be a Bad Person or energy there but then there was a jeep parked on another street and she did the same thing.

gratefulmezze · 01/06/2026 13:10

Walking under bridges (on the canal) while on a lead....off the lead she's unfazed by them.

Ipsevenenabibas · 01/06/2026 13:11

Inflatables like big Santa's blown up outside around Christmas. If it wasn't for this I could genuinely say she is truly fearless.

BeardySchnauzer · 01/06/2026 13:13

Yep - he’s fine with fireworks and storms

TreatedAsOptional · 01/06/2026 13:15

Skin!

She will not sit on my or touch any part of me unless it’s covered with clothing.
Other than rubbing her face against my nose.

She also loves bleach and pears…

TeenLifeMum · 01/06/2026 13:16

My old spaniel couldn’t care less about storms or fireworks but the window cleaner had him jumping into my arms shaking. Current spaniel is scared of certain men - can’t decide why only some and not others but I’m wondering if she’s seeing something I’m not.

JustFrustrated · 01/06/2026 13:16

Cooked spaghetti….. my cat.

Entangledlife · 01/06/2026 13:17

My dog was scared of a rose yesterday. It had newly opened from the last time she was in the garden and she could see it waving in the breeze so bravely tried to stalk it but when she got close it got too much for her so she backed away growling - a Labrador cross 🙄😂she's also terrified if I have a bath which is a regular occurrence - she runs into the bathroom and tries to rescue me but if a drop of water touches her she turns and runs

thecatdidit · 01/06/2026 13:19

My little dog is frightened to walk on flooring in shops or community halls, service stations etc. Not afraid of fireworks or thunder.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/06/2026 13:20

Men in headgear, especially motorbike helmets.
I think he has the same reaction as I used to do with the Cybermen (shudder).

Entangledlife · 01/06/2026 13:20

She's also terrified of one of my friends. She's ok with men in general but this one she will bark and growl and run in big circles round him but won't come anywhere near him (unless he has a treat in his hand then she will deign to take it before backing away) The friend is the most gentle soul and would do anything to help out an animal in trouble, I have no idea what's going on there.

whirlyhead · 01/06/2026 13:21

I have a big daft lump of a cat who is petrified of his sister. Who is about 20% of his size. She hisses at him and you don't see him for dust.

She is quite scary though.

Domino211 · 01/06/2026 13:21

My spaniels favourite thing in the world
is a tennis ball, would happily retrieve all day long. A ping pong ball however is clearly the most dangerous thing ever invented as they totally freak him out!! He’s also pretty cautious about marbles

Tallisker · 01/06/2026 13:22

I had a horse that would not go over a level crossing on the road, but was happy to squeeze through the pedestrian gates and walk across the same railway lines, just a foot or two away.

Squirrelchops1 · 01/06/2026 13:23

Blowing raspberries

DoAWheelie · 01/06/2026 13:24

One of my cats very very smart, but is terrified at the sound of a can or bottle of coke opening. But she knows what the noise is, where it comes from, and that it's harmless, and is terrified anyway.

Every time she hears it she jumps out her skin and lands with all her claws out. She's accidentally shredded my lap several times during her freak outs.

Luckily she is happy to work with me. Whenever I want to open a can or bottle and she is on my lap, I show it to her first. She jumps off and sits on the floor at my feet, freaks out when I open it, then jumps right back into my lap.

It's utterly adorable and makes me laugh every time.

One of my dogs is scared of wooden bridges that have the tiny gaps between the slats so you can see the water underneath. She lays down and refuses to move so I end up carrying her across. My other dog is fine with them.

My beautiful cat is long gone although I still have her photos on display in my living room.
I was in my 20s when I got her and living a student life style. We used to play a lot of Pink Floyd LPs and my poor cat was absolutely terrified if we played their album Meddle. I think it was the way the sounds jumped from speaker to speaker. She used to get so upset I stopped playing it.
