What's the weirdest thing your pet is scared of?

My friend's dog is terrified of cardboard boxes but completely ignores thunderstorms 😅

Pets can be so strange sometimes.

What's the weirdest thing your dog or cat is scared of?

Vacuum cleaners? Bananas? Plastic bags? Random household objects?

I'd love to hear some funny stories.

Not a dog or cat but one of my horses is consistently terrified of her own shadow. The worst is when she reaches her head down to rub her nose on her boot, sees her shadow moving, spooks, and then trips over herself while I’m yelling “fuckssake!” and trying to snatch the reins back up. 😂

Window cleaners
hoover
floor brush
legs under the blanket moving
the noise the sofa makes when you lean back on it

My guinea pig bolts to the back of his cage when someone stirs a cup of tea with a spoon (about 20 times a day). Similar when unloading cutlery from dishwasher. He lives in the kitchen, so not an unfamiliar noise…

You should ask this in the horse topic! Horses are scared of very random things. We had one once who spooked at a large leaf at ground level which was wet and the sun was reflecting off it. Same horse also spooked at a log on the grass verge which has been laying there for at least 15 years!

Very funny video about spooky horses - they're such funny daft creatures

The smell of lamb cooking terrified our previous Labrador. His reaction was always so extreme that I researched it and it’s actually a thing.

Newhere321 · Today 03:16

Farts! Including his own. If my dog does one, he flings his head round to look at his bottom in shock and scoots off. If anyone else does one, he bolts to bed and won’t come back.

Being scared of your own shadow might be the winner of this thread

Has anyone figured out why cats are obsessed with plastic?

When I was growing up,we had a lady who lived around the corner who collected animals-ive never met such an animal lover in my life

When she died, she had 57 cats,6 dogs a handful of small animals like hamsters and gerbils and a small family of rats that lived under her shed

Anyway,I remember her having the most gorgeous black and white spaniel called Ben

He was lovely and could sing along (in tune) to the coronation street theme tune

He was terrified of the (then) emmerdale farm theme tune-he would run and hide, while shaking and crying until it was over

He wasn't that bad with the eastenders one but you could tell he wasnt keen

Once the corrie opening credits and music had stopped,he'd settle down to watch it

I've never met a dog who loved corrie and hated emmerdale like he did-i cried my eyes out when he passed

I've just found out that ds's dog (who we have for the week) is scared of crutches

I've pulled a nerve in my hip and am having to use them to get around outside (not too bad while in the house)

We didnt know until I stepped outside yesterday and instead of coming outside with us,(he had serious fomo-he follows ds around in fear he may miss out on something) he cowered under our table while crying

He's fine with them propped up against the wall,he has an issue with me using them, which will be fun when I take him out later on (I need to keep moving to ease it)

I might have to tank up on painkillers and risk it

About 6 months ago DDog developed a fear of his food bowl/food
he would eat a bit than back off and bark at it until we stood by his with a hand on his back and reassured him.
Vet checked him and said no physical cause
We changed the bowl
We moved the bowl
We raised the bowl
We changed his food

We now feed him off the floor on a mat, but we did have to switch from raw as obviously that wouldn't work

So he's brave enough to start the conversation, but not brave enough to hear the reply 😂

He's all talk and no action!

Just like his owner...lol

We once lost ours in a plantation as someone went past with a little battery powered car - she took off but quietly so we didn't realise she had gone. Made it all the way back to our car thank god, about 2 miles away though. Worst time of my life (nearly) trying to find her.

Single traffic cones - to be avoided at all costs - and woofed at once she's past.

Wheelchairs - that's embarassing.

My dog has never liked a food bowl since we got her aged 3.

She likes to get her nose in an spread her food out and then start eating. But if its in a bowl, she can't do that and she gets freaked out when the kibble bits clang the side of the bowl.

She just gets fed on the floor now. Not even on a mat. Just kibble, shredded chicken, pumpkin, bran, ham and tablets spread all over the kitchen floor like the scene of a factory explosion.

Our last dog was frightened of a pet rabbit a DD’s friend brought to show her. She hid behind the sofa! Ditto when a dd home from uni brought her pet rat Dave (mostly free range) home for the hols. Again, DDog was cowering behind the sofa.

1AnotherOne · Today 12:44

My dog:

the hoover but not the lawn mower or the carpet wet vac which is considerably louder

flies. Will have her trembling under a table but will happily chase seagulls, geese etc

walking on the hard wood floor if her paws are wet after coming in from outside. She has to be carried to the carpet.

motorbikes and fireworks (fair)

DD has 3 rats and often looks after a friends budgie
DDog is terrified of all of them

We have a small cat (2.6kg) scared of nearly everything, but especially DH's multi-coloured socks on his feet.

MEBBEEE · Today 13:43

Still water.

Not as in she only likes a schweppes, but still as in a pond. A River or the sea where the waters obviously moving, no problem, loves it in fact.

Oddly,a friends tiny (size of a kitten) cat is terrified of my crocs

Im the only person she knows that wears them (I use them as slippers) and she cowers and hisses at me if I nip round wearing them

Shes a nervous cat anyway but she really doesn't like them

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · Today 16:13

The washing line pole - no idea why? She's a 48kg Rottweiler, so really she shouldn't be scared of anything...

She also hates the hoover, unless you use the nozzle attachment to hoover HER, then it's ok

And she's not keen on when you rip tinfoil out of the box, but the cats also hate it too, so who knows what that's all about

Hogett · Today 16:23

Owls, yes after 8 years of having him, this big furry bear (newfoundland) has decided owls are very scary and he must be under our duvet shaking! No idea what's caused it, but he refuses to be anywhere but under the duvet the minute he hears hooting

The fear of crutches made me laugh 😂 Pets always manage to find the most unexpected things terrifying.

It's amazing how some dogs can decide that a bowl is terrifying but eating the exact same food off the floor is perfectly fine 😂

The sofa making a noise when you lean back is such a specific fear 😂 Dogs really do invent their own rules.
