What's the weirdest thing your pet is scared of?

My friend's dog is terrified of cardboard boxes but completely ignores thunderstorms 😅

Pets can be so strange sometimes.

What's the weirdest thing your dog or cat is scared of?

Vacuum cleaners? Bananas? Plastic bags? Random household objects?

I'd love to hear some funny stories.

You should ask this in the horse topic! Horses are scared of very random things. We had one once who spooked at a large leaf at ground level which was wet and the sun was reflecting off it. Same horse also spooked at a log on the grass verge which has been laying there for at least 15 years!

I used to ride a friend's horse. She hated the killer chicken who sat on the farm gate along the lane, and an abandoned sofa in a lay-by that was there for years, but always just as scary.

One of my rescues reacts in fear to anything and everything. It's often something she thinks she's seen, so often turns out to be literally nothing, occasionally it's a leaf blowing in the wind. My favourite was a time I walked her when the wheelie bins were out waiting to be collected, a neighbour has a large sticker of a dog on theirs'. My dog was losing her shit, even when we walked past it and she must have realised it wasn't a real dog, she refused to back down!

My cat is terrified of anything that makes a rustling sound when you move it. A bag, a coat, paper etc she’s a weirdo.

Balloons
Anyone in high vis wear
Red vehicles (think this is because of the post van)
Baths
Teenage boys
Couldn't care less about fireworks

We had a collie that was scared of sheep. Would literally leg it if a sheep turned to look at her.

Hiccups. My dog is terrified.

Even if you try and hiccup quietly. Its like she can sense the change in your breathing.

Even if you're in the house but in a different room she still knows. I once spent a whole evening watching TV on my laptop in the garden office because I had hiccups I couldn't get rid of.

She's also very unsure about DH laughing. She's not scared as such but she gets very unsettled by it. Only DH's laugh. It's a perfectly normal laugh, not one of those really extravagant laughs men do . Everyone else is allowed to laugh, just not DH.

The trouble is that when DH tries to suppress his laughter for the dog's sake, he gets hiccups. I think the only solution is to LTB, right?

Anything that flaps like a plastic bag or one of those car covers when it’s windy. He also hates the vacuum but doesn’t mind fireworks or thunder

I dont have a dog but often have my adults ds's dog

He loves to go in the garden and start singing the song of his people

However,if another dog starts barking back,it is the most frightening thing hes ever heard and he shoots back in the house

If ds is standing there,he takes cover behind him

He's also scared of the hoover and tries to bite it

He's terrified of gravestones-i once took him for a walk in a graveyard and he froze at the sight of them

Fine walking around the graveyard but scared of walking past them

He's a huge,soft loon-picture of the nutter

So he's brave enough to start the conversation, but not brave enough to hear the reply 😂

Big Lionel often expresses fear though hissing.

He is scared of the plumber/boiler service man (don't know why, he's a lovely man and has been here several times, so not a total stranger).

However due to this, the plumber is scared of him, I actually had to escort him past the cat last time he was here.

Edited

Hiccups is a new one 😂 I don't think I've ever heard of a dog being scared of hiccups before!

A collie scared of sheep might be the winner so far 😂

Mine seems fine until a plastic bag makes the slightest noise too

The cat was scared of one of the baby's stuffed toys. Anywhere we wanted to exclude the cat from, we'd put the red toy elephant in the doorway and he'd stay away.

pinkpjamas1 · Yesterday 16:18

Buoys. Red ones in particular!

letmebetheone · Yesterday 16:23

My dog-

Ladders. Up against a wall, on the back of a van, being carried by somebody. He goes mad.

The hose pipe. He loves water and will swim anywhere but as soon as I touch the hosepipe he is off indoors and hiding.

Sneezing, but only mine! The rest of the family can sneeze but if I do all hell lets loose.

My cat is petrified of foil (and therefore by default the foil drawer)

That was another thing one cat was scared of you had to be very quiet when using it.

thenightsky · Yesterday 17:34

Prosecco bottles and tea towels. He gives massive side eye and leaves the room in disgust (lurcher).

My now departed Doberman was terrified of the Brittany Spears song toxic and would try to get on my lap. Unfortunately it was constantly played on the radio. When I twigged the connection I rushed to turn off the radio.

MrsMoastyToasty · Yesterday 17:42

Toasty Boy Cat is scared of our internal garage door from the kitchen and bin bags.
He is not scared of fireworks.

I think I have a faulty Cat.

ToadRage · Yesterday 17:44

My old cat loved a good thunderstorm and fireworks but spent the entirety of my young cousins visit under my brothers bed. There are four of them and as children they were fairly loud and boisterous. In our household I was the youngest at 16 so he was used to a quieter life. I think he understood with storms and fireworks they were outside and he was safe inside but when the noise came insude he didn't like it. My other cat was scared of suitcases, bin bags and sacks, probably reminiscent of his alleged abandonment. Poor thing was a gibbering wreck when i left home.

FionnulaTheCooler · Yesterday 17:52

I recently bought a wheeled washing basket after throwing my back out carrying heavy wet washing out to the garden. The cat is terrified of it and runs a mile when she sees it coming.

Idontjetwashthefucker · Yesterday 17:53

Balloons and the clothes maiden...we have 3 but he's only scared of one

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 17:54

Well the usual things like fireworks and thunderstorms (bangs). But she’s also scared of my nephews 2.5 and 7 and if they come round she has to be locked in a room away from them. She uses to like the older one when he was young. Also hairdryer, vacuum cleaner.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 17:55

And the vet. She wets herself or defecates in her cat carrier when she’s taken there (rarely).

FlatErica · Yesterday 17:59

My tiny green cheeked conure loathes an empty drink can. He will attack and toss it around, his crest up, bristling with fury.
