Oh gosh, that's madness. We went for our walk at about 6am this morning, before it got crazy hot. Since then he's been indoors most of the day, in relative cool. Just out for a wee in the garden and it's still too hot for him. He's short-haired, so it must be horrendous for fluffy dogs.

I went out at about 6.30 today. And he still flopped on the grass at home to cool down when we got back. He's a Labrador.

How do cooling mats for dogs work? Do you fill it with cold water then cumbersomely poor the water out once it is no longer cold and fill it with fresh cool water?

dryingfashionitems · 25/05/2026 18:19

I'm sure my dogs would love to cool their tummies 😂but is it a faff filling them up and emptying the old water?

HazeyjaneIII · 25/05/2026 18:24

After a morning melting whilst dropping dd back at uni... I've spent the rest of the day with ds watching Deadpool with a Calippo... curtains closed, fan on. Heaven.

No, they’re gel filled. No emptying/refilling needed. DLabrador loves his BUT most dogs I know view theirs as Something That Must Be Avoided!

@babymamalove do stuff first thing I've been up since 5.30 and did some house work and gardening ,Chores out and about .
Aired house then close all window and curtains as the sun comes around.
Don't do much throughout the day but yes parenting small DC in this heat is a nightmare .

Thank you ❤️ now it’s cooler I got some work done so am feeling a lot better. Took DD under a tree at the local park to crawl around under.

Now these heatwaves are getting more frequent I will definitely do what you said in advance - get up early and snooze all afternoon!

My first thought reading this was"Deadpool with a Calippo? Must be the sequel." I think the heat is getting to me.

Justbreathagain · 25/05/2026 18:59

God awful today 29 degrees! Far too hot and worrying about my ds burning so lathering on suncream and lobbing hats on

Tuxedomaddness · 25/05/2026 19:05

Just seen lowest overnight temp here is 20c. It's still 31c now...but slight breeze (of warm air).

Our boy lay on his for 2 minutes before deciding it was something to be chewed, so it had to be confiscated.

WildFlowerBees · 25/05/2026 20:19

28 here, I got up at 6am to fling all the doors and windows open but was already warm. Thankfully we bought a portable ac thingy which is currently rumbling away in our bedroom which was 26 degrees. Moving next year I hope so we’ll put ac in I don’t do well in the heat makes me very irritable, heat and flies. Bastard things.

And the gel does the cooling? No need to store the mat in a cool place or the fridge?

Our dog won’t go anywhere near the cool mat. She’s eyes it with much suspicion

DH and I disagree on whether this is the thing to do first thing in the morning. I think only everything shut, windows, blinds the lot not letting any heat or light in works…he says everything open to let air through?!?! Today it was my way and it’s made no difference, it’s still a pit of heat and sweat. South facing bedroom is basically a sauna.

PlumpHobbit · 25/05/2026 21:09

I absolutely despise it. I far prefer autumn and winter.

Our house has the sun blazing on it all bloody day, and once the heats got in (even with windows and blinds closed) you cannot get rid of it

The fucking seagulls (even though we arent that near the coast) scream all fucking night so we cant have windows open

Have just had all windows open since 7ish. Its only dropped to 27 degrees i could cry

Poor 1 year olds room is like a bloody oven. Trying to find ways to entertain him without dying from heatstroke is hard

Also this is only May I dread to think whats coming in peak summer

Heat in the UK is disgusting houses just arent designed for it and turn in to ovens

Also at this time of year, the sun is blazing until 9pm the breeze seems to drop just as you finally lose the sun too

The ONLY good thing is ive got a fuck tonne of washing dry on the line, ive run out of washing apart from what we are wearing in the day, which feels wrong as I now don't have any washing i can do to take advantage of being in the 7th circle of hell

I absolutely despise it 😭 its disgusting tomorrow as well and even the rest of the week isn't especially pleasant

WildFlowerBees · 25/05/2026 21:12

@StillCreatingAName if it’s cooler outside then inside I’ll open everything and as soon as it warms up a little I shut everything, blinds curtains the lot. Then I’ll open everything again late evening when it’s again cooler outside than in.

Pedallleur · 25/05/2026 21:17

North West and the bike computer registered 36 Deg as I got back home approx 1.30

JenniferBooth · 25/05/2026 21:21

Cant even wash up in the Sanctuary sauna without the sweat pouring off me Fucking shithole

There’s a trick to it. (Long term living in east and west facing maisonette has taught me through trial and error.)

You have to have all windows open as wide as possible when the sun goes down and allow the place to cool overnight. Then just after dawn - the coolest time is a little after the sun has gone up and before the ground has had time to warm up - you close everything and pull all curtains and blinds shut. And repeat. If you’ve cooled it enough it will stay cool until around 3 or 4pm. Whenever the sun starts hitting your windows. As long as the temperature outside is higher than inside it does help to keep everything closed.

I’m in an above ground-level maisonette so can leave everything flung open all night but appreciate that’s not possible for everyone. It’s the only way I get through summer, though.

Kickinthenostalgia · 25/05/2026 22:54

29 here today, bit of a breeze but not much relief. Now it’s still about 22 and I’m contemplating leaving my aircon unit on all night and just taking the hit with the leccy bill 🥵🥵

bluewanda · 25/05/2026 23:04

It’s bloody horrible. If I open the doors we seem to instantly get about 10 huge bluebottles buzzing around in the house. I am sweating and lethargic and can’t be arsed to do anything. I can’t keep the windows open at night because the neighbours are sodding noisy in their garden. Can’t wait for next week when it’s 20C and drizzling apparently.

Edited to add it’s 34C tomorrow. Fucking hell. I hate it!!
