Twas 31 today in Cornwall. Red tourists staggering about looking shell shocked

bluewanda · 25/05/2026 23:31

Neighbours still shouting at 11.30pm and their young kids are up. I’m wondering whether I should say something at this point.

bluewanda · 25/05/2026 23:33

Oh, and to top it all off I have a job interview this week finally, after applying for about 50000 roles. I’m wondering how I can delay it because I’m going to be a hot sweaty mess if their office doesn’t have air con…

Years ago I taught in a college when there were job interviews during a heatwave and there was no air con. The candidates were contacted to say that in the circumstances, the formal dress code of suit and tie and its female equivalent were not expected.

One male candidate rocked up with a shirt unbuttoned and spread open to not-quite navel and sported a massive chain and medallion in his chest hair. He did not get the job, though not for that reason.

Good luck with the interview, @bluewanda.

BooseysMom · 26/05/2026 06:07

It was 30 degrees in the bedroom last night. DS was not coping. Opening all the windows made no difference so we had a fan on all night. Woke up this morning to lovely fresh cool air through the windows.
Hopefully there'll be thunderstorms later today. Can't wait to be able to breathe again!

MyAutumnCrow · 26/05/2026 06:34

And in 9 days it’ll be cold overnight again in the UK. In June.

xogossipgirlxo · 26/05/2026 06:41

I don’t mind warm weather, but oh my god, last night was absolutely terrible I feel like I had no sleep at all! Couldn’t fall in deep sleep, way too hot.

I don't think 12° is especially cold overnight. It's above the 10° fussy bugger tomato plants want! 😁

My weather app says 2 degrees for the overnight low a week Thursday!

Mind you, I think the Met Office might be involved in the forecast and they sometimes seem to just take a wild stab at it.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/05/2026 07:25

2?! Where are you?

The Met Office does give wild variance, I find!

Rituelec · 26/05/2026 07:25

Work was super hot. It was actually hell. Sounds dramatic but even the most hardy of us were nearly in tears by 4pm. We got through it though. I went straight to Costa for a fruit cooler.

Dd had NOT left curtains pulled so got back to a hot house.

Air con in my bedroom gets my bedroom down to 22 which is better than 29.

Thankful for one cool room

bluewanda · 26/05/2026 07:30

No thunderstorms forecast in the SE unfortunately. The temperature does drop by 10C tomorrow though thank god! (Then back up again for Thurs, Fri and Sat but today is by far the worst day).

I really struggled to focus at work yesterday and house is a tip because the heat completely saps my energy. Also struggling to prep for job interview as I’m so lethargic.

Up north but it’s all changed again since I looked at 6am!

London Basin area sounds like it’s gruelling especially for commuters.

You don't have to be in London for it to be scorching. NW here and it was 33° yesterday. Same again today. Rarely felt such oppressive heat. It's already 20° now and I've got a gruelling bit of work to do shortly in about 35° 🥵

ScaredButUnavoidable · 26/05/2026 07:54

It’s not even 8am and it’s already 24 degrees 😔

I got up to feed the cat and I’ve already had to come and sit back down in front of the fan again.

I hate it so much.

Me and the kids are miserable.

The house is such a state as I have no every to do absolutely anything to keep it in any kind of order.

I just want the heat to go away.

I just don’t understand this. The country is grey and miserable a minimum 10 months of the year. This is one of the few weeks you can get a paddling pool or barbecue out, or go to the beach, and you’re all complaining like it’s the Sahara desert?

This time last week I had to go to a job interview in my long padded coat to cover up my dress in torrential rain and almost 20 degrees cooler than it will be today! Good luck xx

And I’m sure all the people who love the heat are doing exactly that.

But not everyone does.

I don’t ’love the heat’ and I wouldn’t spend a full day on a beach in 30 degrees for example. But the hysteria here and talk like you’re being burned alive just seems way over the top.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 26/05/2026 08:49

Some people just can’t manage heat well at all. It’s really not hysteria if it makes you unwell etc.

This kind of heat has me nauseous and dizzy and I genuinely feel on the edge of collapse. It might sounds ott but it’s absolutely true - my body simply cannot tolerate warm weather.

You say grey and miserable but to me, that's perfect weather. We're all different. Heat, bbqs, paddling pools and boiling hot beaches are a nightmare. I want a cool breeze, clouds and 10°!!

Larrythecatforpm · 26/05/2026 09:00

God last night was awful, was 32 upstairs in my house slept on the sofa as downstairs was cooler. 22 here already, luckily tomorrow it starts dropping back down. I can’t tolerate heat at all my arms come out in hives as I am allergic to it. 😭

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/05/2026 09:04

25 degrees here. I’d love it only it’s boiling here even with a fan on in my bedroom. Luckily I can wfh today.

Where are you based?

It's incredibly (and unseasonably) warm in some parts of the country. Record breaking in London.

Thankfully we're away this week - cooler part of SE coast - but if at home in London I'd be a wreck.

(And cursing our terrace as there is no paddling pool / BBQ space to "enjoy" the weather)

People aren't complaining about some nice weather. People are complaining about disgustingly hot temperatures that our homes and general infrastructure aren't geared to cope with.
