Underrated, simple foods or meals

Sometimes I think there is nothing better than just a plain cheese sandwich. Bread, a nice crumbly mature cheese, butter.

Sure, I love a cheese ploughmans with all the trimmings and pickle. I love a cheese and salad. But I just think a plain cheese sandwich very often gets overlooked. It’s simple but delicious.

Similarily, sometimes I think you can’t beat just butter on toast.

I’m just curious what other simple foods or meals others enjoy.

canned Lentil soup
rice cakes and cottage cheese
Greek yogurt and muesli

so simple, and I’d happily live off them

KnickerlessParsons · 20/05/2026 18:20

Ham sandwich with a crusty white roll, salty butter and Dijon mustard.
Or for a proper meal, corned beef hash.

henlake7 · 20/05/2026 18:20

cheese on toast, or a bowl of your favourite cereal with nice cold milk.

gillybombilly · 20/05/2026 18:20

A bowl of soup - homemade (or tinned) with some crusty granary bread.

NorWouldTilly · 20/05/2026 18:21

Bread, cheese and a glass of red wine is my absolute favourite meal.

(They all need to be the best I can get, but … yeah …)

rubyslippers · 20/05/2026 18:22

Bowl of cornflakes
ice cold milk
sprinkle of sugar
eaten at night

or a well done crumpet with butter and a mug of tea - maybe a piece of mature cheddar or Red Leicester on the side

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/05/2026 18:23

Chip butty or a crisp sandwich with lots of butter and decent chips/crisps.

Whereareyourshoes · 20/05/2026 18:24

Boiled egg and toast .

pendatea · 20/05/2026 18:27

Boiled new potatoes in a little butter and whatever herbs you have like mint, parsley or chives, steamed asparagus or tender stem broccoli with quiche or salmon. I usually make my own quiche then freeze it in slices for when I need it so it comes out as simple but their are some nice premade quiches I use if I haven't made one. We call it our "boring dinner" but its actually really lovely.

hellospring26 · 20/05/2026 18:28

My granny’s soda bread and home made butter as thick as the slice of bread.

Pasta mixed with fried red onion, chorizo or salami, green beans or tender stem and a splash of red wine vinegar.

Pho using pre made broth and leftover chicken or beef,

Carandache18 · 20/05/2026 18:30

Apple and honey sandwich.
Baked potato with salty butter.

Phineyj · 20/05/2026 18:31

Potato salad. YUM!!!

WelshCakeLover · 20/05/2026 18:32

I love a ham egg and chips 🤤 especially with a slice of white bread and butter 🥰

BasilandTom · 20/05/2026 18:33

A jacket potato with lashings of salty butter and a bit too much grated cheese. Potato needs to be done in the oven, low and slow so that the skin cracks when you cut in to it.

My other fav’ is fish fingers and chips. Fish fingers would feature somewhere in my final meal if I was on death row. Grin

Crikeyalmighty · 20/05/2026 18:35

I definitely think cheese on toast, eggs on toast, beans on toast, jacket potato with cheese and beans , fish finger sandwiches

StatuteofLiberty · 20/05/2026 18:37

@NorWouldTilly what is your best!?

Abustedflush · 20/05/2026 18:38

Buttered toast with marmite, topped with a really good quality poached egg.

LettuceAndCarrots · 20/05/2026 18:42

I recently tried the recipe on the back of my packet of spaghetti. It was basically just spaghetti, butter and pepper. It was delicious.

Monty36 · 20/05/2026 18:47

Bacon ( streaky or back free range ) sandwich one white uncut bread with brown sauce or mustard. Or one of each !
Jacket potato cooked low and slow with butter cheese and beans.
Good quality egg with butter and marmite on uncut white bread. Or boiled with soldiers.
