Underrated, simple foods or meals

Sometimes I think there is nothing better than just a plain cheese sandwich. Bread, a nice crumbly mature cheese, butter.

Sure, I love a cheese ploughmans with all the trimmings and pickle. I love a cheese and salad. But I just think a plain cheese sandwich very often gets overlooked. It’s simple but delicious.

Similarily, sometimes I think you can’t beat just butter on toast.

I’m just curious what other simple foods or meals others enjoy.

Not sure it’s an underrated food, but it is a very occasional comfort food meal for me - a ham roll (Scottish morning roll, not any other kind of bread roll will do), and a bowl of Heinz tomato soup. I think it takes me back to childhood. Followed by a cup of tea and a caramel log.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/05/2026 22:21

Oh, the boiled egg in a cup, I’m Scottish and this is how I always had it growing up and into adulthood butter and salt for me. Not runny, but not completely hard boiled, mashed with butter and salt. Accompanied by a couple of slices of white toast with butter.

Shame on you! 😬

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it 🤣 😋

I think three-quarters of my lunches are one of the following:
Eggs on toast
Cheese on toast
Cheese and crackers
Soup
Ham sandwich

BurnoutBee · 20/05/2026 22:24

Spicy chicken on a bed of basmati rice. That’s it.

Ritz and pate

pendatea · 20/05/2026 22:26

@Thatsillymama It is amazing, I'm going to have it tomorrow, haven't made it in ages!

Im scottish and we had this as kids, still love it now. Ive always called it chapped egg 😋

Ah ha! So I'm half Scottish, half Irish, born in Cork but mostly raised in Glasgow. Chapped egg, never heard it called that! Would be interesting if any English folk used to get this?

Carriemac · 20/05/2026 22:29

Thatsillymama · 20/05/2026 22:08

Yes that's exactly it. I'm irish and this was really popular for breakfast when we were growing up with some soda bread. So simple but amazing!

We used to call it ‘ a negg in a negg cup ‘ as a child in Ireland . Though it wasn’t in an ‘egg cop’ it was a tea cup with the egg mashed up in it. Loads of butter, white pepper and salt .
i want one now

UnderatedCrispButty · 20/05/2026 22:31

Tinned tomatoes on white bread toast with lots of butter

Im only about 30 miles from you!! My dad's is from Irish decent. Mum irish/polish. Chapped egg in a cup, loads of butter and salt and pepper 😋.

mumumental · 20/05/2026 22:35

My simple dinners are lots of small easy bits from the fridge. Eg half an avocado, a bit of cheese, bread, a few nuts, etc.

chickenss · 20/05/2026 22:46

I’ve got lots of them -

coucous with tinned mackerel in tomato sauce

pasta with sweetcorn and chorizo

nachos, baked covered with salsa and cheese

good bread whit butter and honey

scrambled eggs with feta

toast with duck fat, salt and paprika

Koulibiak · 20/05/2026 22:49

Nachos - good quality tortilla chips, good salsa, Monterey Jack cheese, in oven 15 minutes, served with a dollop of sour cream. It feels decadent.

Scrambled eggs. Fry some spring onions and chillies, beat the eggs with generous amounts of chopped coriander, Parmesan and black pepper, pour in the pan with the onions and chillies, serve with toast.

And finally - my guilty pleasure is an oven pizza (Dr Oetker or similar). I am very aware of my diet, so this is a rare treat for me, but every few months I allow myself one, topped with lashings of dried chilli flakes. The pleasure to price ratio is very high 😊.

@Carandache18 Yes! the egg has to be a bit soft but not too soft. We had butter and salt in ours as well. Perhaps someone will come along with more input on it's geographical reach!

in Cumbria we call it “botched eggs” - I often make it for my lunch when working from home!

FrangipaniBlue · 20/05/2026 22:53

Warm pasta with a knob of butter stirred through and a bit of herbamere sprinkled on top

Notmenc · 20/05/2026 22:59

Cheesy beans on toast
Scrambled eggs with grated cheese and mixed herbs ,under cooked rather than overcooked! Absolutely amazing.

Empress13 · 20/05/2026 23:00

Good old egg and chips with bread and butter on the side to make chip butties with

hotflashes · 20/05/2026 23:00

I think cheese and tomato is the ultimate marriage of foods. In a sandwich, or on a pizza, the best toastie, mozzarella and tomato, cheese on toast with tomato, macaroni cheese with grilled tomatoes etc - nothing beats it imo!

CaptainBeefheartspal · 20/05/2026 23:06

I like the children’s sandwiches from marks n Spencer’s. 3/4 of a sandwich, best of both bread, bit of butter and plain cheese or ham. It’s just enough for me for lunch with some fruit for breakfast.

bolognazey · 20/05/2026 23:46

Really enjoying reading through all these replies.

I’ve never had or heard of the egg in a cup that people are talking about.

I agree with so many of these suggestions, tinned tomatoes on toast, cheese and crackers (how could I forget that!), chip butties, crumpets drenched in butter.

Some things I have actually never tried but now am going to:

Pasta with butter on. I normally love plain pasta with a good quality olive oil on but have never tried it with butter.

A tomato sandwich. I have never had one! I imagine it needs to be lovely quality tomatoes though and not any that are tasteless.

Just thought of another one! Bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I could live on this it’s so delicious.

Wonderknicks · 20/05/2026 23:51

Pasta with marmite, butter & cheese stirred in.
Marmite on toast.
Marmite on a crumpet.
Marmite on sesame ryvita.
Do you see a theme?

MardyMillylala · 20/05/2026 23:55

Cheese on toast with Hendersons relish. My mum swears by eggs in milk with cheese & mushrooms.
