Underrated, simple foods or meals

Sometimes I think there is nothing better than just a plain cheese sandwich. Bread, a nice crumbly mature cheese, butter.

Sure, I love a cheese ploughmans with all the trimmings and pickle. I love a cheese and salad. But I just think a plain cheese sandwich very often gets overlooked. It’s simple but delicious.

Similarily, sometimes I think you can’t beat just butter on toast.

I’m just curious what other simple foods or meals others enjoy.

Cheese and crackers. God I love cheese and crackers. I’m on a diet, so I’m basically hallucinating them at this point.

Pasta, passata, garlic granules, chilli flakes, chopped crispy bacon, and peas with loads of grated cheese.

Baked sweet potato, loooooooads of salted butter, cottage cheese, chopped chives, salt and pepper.

Chicken breasts, green beans and new potatoes coated in pesto and roasted all together.

Kingsmill white thick bread, butter and ham

Delish

Mushroom risotto - made in September from wild mushrooms, garlic, arborio rice and grated parmesan.

Delicious.

Sops. Boiled milk with bread put in or milk poured over toast. It’s a very rare guilty pleasure of mine because it reminds me of when my gran made it for me when I was ill.

Tomato sandwiches but they have to be greenhouse tomatoes and they need to be on thickly buttered plain bread.

Macaroni pasta with grated cheese melted through it and a tiny bit of tomato sauce.

A ‘piece’ on cheese and onion crisps, again on thickly buttered plain bread with either really sweet tea or a glass of ice cold milk.

Edited to add I’m now craving all of the above because I’m calorie counting to lose weight 🤣

We had boiled egg in a cup, mum Irish, Dad Scots/Dutch. Both my parents made it.
My dad was fond of a pie sandwich, I was never keen, preferred a Findus Crispy cheese pancake sandwich.

Rice crispys.

Omg yes, divine!

wifeofeverything · 21/05/2026 00:24

Slow cooked beef shin.

We had this tonight just with some crispy potatoes and it was devine. So easy and tasty and cheap!

From my childhood - a simple cheese toastie made in a brevile sandwich maker with a big heap of hp sauce for dipping.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/05/2026 00:51

I had a bacon butty with brown sauce today, on white tiger bread. Not had one for years. It was amazing.

Mum called sops pobs! Ugh. Served when ill and I hated it.

CookingFatCat · 21/05/2026 01:16

Cooked spaghetti topped with cheddar cheese , under the grill until golden and bubbly.

Nachos - good quality tortilla chips, good salsa, Monterey Jack cheese, in oven 15 minutes, served with a dollop of sour cream. It feels decadent.

Scrambled eggs. Fry some spring onions and chillies, beat the eggs with generous amounts of chopped coriander, Parmesan and black pepper, pour in the pan with the onions and chillies, serve with toast.

And finally - my guilty pleasure is an oven pizza (Dr Oetker or similar). I am very aware of my diet, so this is a rare treat for me, but every few months I allow myself one, topped with lashings of dried chilli flakes. The pleasure to price ratio is very high 😊.

The Swedish cafe here in Bath does scrambled eggs like this with crispy fried shallots on top-on toast- best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had

Ah ha! So I'm half Scottish, half Irish, born in Cork but mostly raised in Glasgow. Chapped egg, never heard it called that! Would be interesting if any English folk used to get this?

Yes! English here! I had this whenever I was unwell, or out of sorts. We called it Eggy Cup. Basically its a mashed boiled egg, not runny but not hard, with butter, salt and pepper. Served with toast and a glass of lucozade if poorly, or cocoa if sad.

Re egg in a cup i.e. mashed up boiled egg with a bit of butter and salt? Is this an Irish thing? We always got that when I was a kid (yummy) but most other people I've mentioned it too have never had it except my sister in law who's Dad is Irish. Perhaps I can clear it up now? Seems basic like it would be a thing everywhere but perhaps not?

I knew an Englishman who definitely knew this kind of egg. His Mum and Dad were both English, too. No Irish relations as far as I know.

tooloololoo · 21/05/2026 21:43

Burrata and sliced beef tomato

upinaballoon · 21/05/2026 21:50

Tinned tuna and tinned butter beans or cannellini beans, with a bit of vinegar, salt and pepper and a bit of oil from the tuna. You can add cooked pasta and onion and a herb and what you will. Italian tonno e fagioli. I had the really simple one today and I threw in a few capers from a jar at the back of the fridge.

Bread and dripping. Little sprinkle of salt.

Roundaboot · 21/05/2026 22:07

I made pasta with lentils for dinner tonight. Just onion, carrot and celery with a bit of tomato puree, brown lentils and pasta. It was so simple and so tasty

BrennieGirl · 21/05/2026 22:23

We call egg in a cup a guggy egg. Nothing nicer especially made in your special cup by your mammy.

Middlemarch123 · 21/05/2026 22:31

“Can I have an omelette mam?” Said in best Stacey voice.

Ultimate comfort food, lots of cheese and mushrooms, crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle.

Lush

pendatea · 21/05/2026 22:52

@danglethedingle & @upinaballoon Well that makes sense given its literally mashed egg in a cup with butter and salt / pepper. I would have assumed it was pretty universal. However in my own life if it gets mentioned people are always like what's that? I'm please to hear egg in a cup has significant geographical reach on these Isles!
