Underrated, simple foods or meals

Sometimes I think there is nothing better than just a plain cheese sandwich. Bread, a nice crumbly mature cheese, butter.

Sure, I love a cheese ploughmans with all the trimmings and pickle. I love a cheese and salad. But I just think a plain cheese sandwich very often gets overlooked. It’s simple but delicious.

Similarily, sometimes I think you can’t beat just butter on toast.

I’m just curious what other simple foods or meals others enjoy.

Boiled new potatoes in a little butter and whatever herbs you have like mint, parsley or chives, steamed asparagus or tender stem broccoli with quiche or salmon. I usually make my own quiche then freeze it in slices for when I need it so it comes out as simple but their are some nice premade quiches I use if I haven't made one. We call it our "boring dinner" but its actually really lovely.

That's showing off. That's not simple.🤦‍♀️

Agree about a cheese sandwich and toast. I'd also add a simple bacon sandwich to that list.

An omelette is fab for a light meal, with some buttery new potatoes if I want a little more substance.

Jacket potato, cheese and beans always hits my comfort food buttons.

PMT me is also fond of a chip butty (preferably with some curry sauce!).

Jacket potato with butter and cheese

No need for a ton of seasoning, side salad, fancy fillings.

Just a lovely soft jacket potato! Yum.

+1 for beans on toast.

Some sliced apples with decent peanut butter, some granola, coconut and cinnamon on top! Amazing! You can use bananas and strawberries too!

Buttered toast with marmite, topped with a really good quality poached egg.

Boiled egg on top of the marmite?

Corn on the cob with lashings of butter and freshly ground black pepper. Two little stickies in the end. Kitchen roll for your face after. 😛

Bread, cheese and a glass of red wine is my absolute favourite meal.

(They all need to be the best I can get, but … yeah …)

This is also a very good one! But for me it would definitely have to be a blue cheese

Cheese sandwiches are the best! Followed by crisp, bacon or sausage sandwiches, in that order.

A boiled egg, white set yolk runny, white bread and butter cut into soldiers with a sprinkle of salt. I use to have this every day as a child. I lived with my Nan for about 18 months when I was a toddler then as an adult she would love to tell everyone how I use to insist on a heg and shoulder for my tea. Still think it’s the best

embolass · 20/05/2026 20:44

Re egg in a cup i.e. mashed up boiled egg with a bit of butter and salt? Is this an Irish thing? We always got that when I was a kid (yummy) but most other people I've mentioned it too have never had it except my sister in law who's Dad is Irish. Perhaps I can clear it up now? Seems basic like it would be a thing everywhere but perhaps not?

Fried tomatoes on buttered brown toast, salt and pepper, mug of tea. Heaven. Also works with mushrooms and brown sauce.
