Underrated, simple foods or meals

Sometimes I think there is nothing better than just a plain cheese sandwich. Bread, a nice crumbly mature cheese, butter.

Sure, I love a cheese ploughmans with all the trimmings and pickle. I love a cheese and salad. But I just think a plain cheese sandwich very often gets overlooked. It’s simple but delicious.

Similarily, sometimes I think you can’t beat just butter on toast.

I’m just curious what other simple foods or meals others enjoy.

A Mushroom Omelette with twist of black pepper. If feeling fancy can be enhanced with a side of watercress and a few sliced cherry tomatoes sprinkled with salt (and a glass of white)

pendatea · 20/05/2026 20:51

@danglethedingle Sounds nice! How do you fry the tomatoes?

Beans on toast with a sprinkling of cheese on top - one of my favourites

Was going to say this. The best. Or in a jacket potato.

Now I want to eat a slice of really good brown toast with salty butter and honey.

Can I ask what’s difficult about it?

It’s not.
But it’s not simple. It has multiple ( individually nice) ingredients and is subjective in terms of herbs, type of quiche etc.

This thread is for the food that is more than the sum of its (basic) parts.

EwwSprouts · 20/05/2026 20:57

Warm roast chicken, salty butter in a baguette. No salad, sauce or anything else.

danglethedingle · 20/05/2026 20:57

@pendatea slice 2-3 large tomatoes quite thickly, fry gently in olive oil, till soft but not mushy. Pile onto thickly buttered brown toast, apply salt and black pepper to taste.

Bowl of cornflakes
ice cold milk
sprinkle of sugar
eaten at night

perfection

or a well done crumpet with butter and a mug of tea - maybe a piece of mature cheddar or Red Leicester on the side

Cornflakes taste different at night. It’s a fact.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/05/2026 20:58

Well, obviously tomato sandwiches 😁 with lots of salt and pepper.

Soft boiled eggs with sumac, salt and paprika sprinkled into the yolk and buttered soldiers 😋

I can't manage a full fish and chips portion so I nab the thin crispy end of DHs order and pop it in a cheap white bap with tartar sauce.

New potatoes with butter, few slices of good back bacon n peas.

Re egg in a cup i.e. mashed up boiled egg with a bit of butter and salt? Is this an Irish thing? We always got that when I was a kid (yummy) but most other people I've mentioned it too have never had it except my sister in law who's Dad is Irish. Perhaps I can clear it up now? Seems basic like it would be a thing everywhere but perhaps not?

Edited

Scottish dh remembers it well, and makes it for me now and then, especially when I am back late from a work trip and very very tired. But his version has small cubes of bread and butter in with the egg, butter and salt. And the egg isn't quite hard boiled.

Walker1178 · 20/05/2026 21:03

I bought some really lovely vine tomatoes at the start of this month while DP was away. Pretty much lived off cheese and tomato sandwiches for a week they were so good!

Crumpets drenched in butter or a simple jacket potato with cheese are also underrated IMO

pendatea · 20/05/2026 21:05

@Carandache18 Yes! the egg has to be a bit soft but not too soft. We had butter and salt in ours as well. Perhaps someone will come along with more input on it's geographical reach!

My aunt used to make that for me. She grew up in Cornwall.

Middlemarch123 · 20/05/2026 21:12

Fish finger sandwich, proper butter, bit of salt and vinegar, tartar sauce. Thick white bread. Yumsville.

didntsignupfothis · 20/05/2026 21:12

Cheese and cucumber sandwich
Cheese and beans on toast
Any cereal with ice cold milk, eaten in the evening.

mismomary · 20/05/2026 21:14

Now craving a cheese and tomato sandwich! With cup of tea. Oh and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps.

suki1964 · 20/05/2026 21:22

Egg and chips with white bread and butter

Fried eggs , runny - no slime or crispy bits. Chips can be frozen or hand cut, but have to be deep fried. Lashings of malt vinegar and salt and real butter , just room soft, slathered on the bread

Tomato ketchup on the side

That was my 50th birthday meal out. Its what I wanted and its what I got and id rather have that as a treat ( I dont eat it that often ) then being taken out for a restaurant meal

Egg in a cup is very much needed when feeling poorly , tired and CBA , or just want comfort

Ive even had to cook it when working as a chef, family meals out and great granny/ grandad has no appetite , id offer soup and a scoop or egg in a cup and the egg would be taken up for those really small eaters

Uniqueheartbee · 20/05/2026 21:27

Jacket potato with butter, salt, pepper and cheese

Pasta with olive oil, tomatoes and basil

Toast with butter and jam/marmite/scrambled eggs

Omelette

Pizza bagel or pitta… tomato puree, herbs and cheese (possibly add capers, pineapple and black olives too)

Cheesy mashed potato with extra cheese and tomatoes sliced on top baked in the oven.

Yum, I'm hungry now!

I can see why you married him... 😋

Talking about the reach, I'm Welsh and never heard of it, but I can't speak for all my countrymen and women...

(But my Nana would add 'cockles with vinegar and pepper, eaten with a cocktail stick' to this list...),

Pate and strawberry jam sandwich 😋

Yes that's exactly it. I'm irish and this was really popular for breakfast when we were growing up with some soda bread. So simple but amazing!
