Would I be an idiot to take this through airport security?

I have recently started taking creatine and am finding it so beneficial. I am going away for 5 nights next week and want to take some with me. The packet it comes in is massive. Would I be stupid to take some in a small plastic bag like this in my hand luggage ( I don’t have a hold bag) or will I be detained?

It's totally fine, ignore the scare mongering. My son has a prescription for laxipeg laxiative powder and when I travel I pit it in a clear sandwich bag - it's a white powder. Noone ever stopped me and if they did they can test it.

Butterme · 17/05/2026 20:17

You’re braver than me, I would never risk carrying anything on that wasn’t sealed - perhaps it’s from working in a prison for years.

If you were going for 2 weeks or more then I could understand it but I think 5 nights you’ll be absolutely fine.

Take it the morning you leave and as soon as you get back.

How long does it stay in the body for?

alondonerabroad · 17/05/2026 20:21

I travelled recently and chose not to take my supplements that weren’t clearly marked for this reason. Either go without for the duration of the holiday or buy some wherever you’re going. I would absolutely not be taking a clear plastic baggie of an unidentifiable white powder in my hand luggage.

It'll be fine. I'd put it in a small tub and put it in your wash bag and toiletries

My husband did similar with protein powder when he as in his early 20’s - he was strip searched at Heathrow which included naked squats while someone checked nothing was up his bum. I really wouldn’t do this if I was you 😂

How long ago was this? If 15+ years I'd expect it would go differently now with the instant chemical checks.

Sleepingworries · 17/05/2026 20:33

@FourSevenThree tbf it probably was about 15 years ago now lol

What benefit does the creatine give you? Am really interested. Thanks

I take it for brain fog. Was recommended by my consultant psychiatrist.

Daftypants · 17/05/2026 20:40

Not worth the hassle to be honest .
I don’t bother to take any of my supplements with me when I am going away from home for a few days .
I just take my prescription meds along and pack in hand luggage.
Maybe you can buy it ( order online for pick up ) at Boots and pick up once through security

Shessweetbutapsycho · 17/05/2026 20:40

Haven’t RTFT so possibly already suggested- just go onto Amazon and order some gummies then take those in their original packaging. Not quite as effective in gummy form as the creatine monohydrate powder, but looks much less dodgy than trying to smuggle a small baggie of an unidentified powdered substance through airport security…

HoldMyWine · 17/05/2026 20:45

I did post upthread that I’ve bought sachets of creatine to take to be in the safe side. Thanks to all who answered.

It won't be an issue. White powder in a creatine tub could just as easily be cocaine. If they are concerned they can taste it straight away.

ItsLOSELikeLostNotLOOSELikeBaggy · 17/05/2026 21:42

I buy the tablet version off amazon. Would that be an option?

Morganrae1 · 17/05/2026 22:45

Take it in a bag with the front of the pack inserted.

Flufferz · 17/05/2026 22:54

This will be fine (uk based, can’t comment for other countries)

internationally airport security test for anything that is a danger to the plane or the airport… ie explosives. The swab will not pick up explosives so therefore it is not a risk to the airport or airplane therefore no issue for security.

if your concern is actually customs ie you think they may think the powder is drugs, then the same applies they will take a swab, it will not test positive for drugs therefore not illegal therefore no issue for customs. - however depending where you are travelling you may want to check the ingredients very carefully. Things that are perfectly common and legal in the uk are illegal in the Middle East and Asia and can carry huge sentences.

expect to explain what it is and why it is packaged like this but it is not unusual in the slightest.

I've taken bags of powder through before. Youll be fine. They can taste it for starters to know it's not dodge

As of airport staff are going to taste random bags of god knows what!

And again. Please think if as an employer or employee you would get staff to taste unknown white powder.

Autumnlife · 17/05/2026 23:05

My protein do sachets of it for £10.99 if nobody’s already mentioned it

Wildyone · 17/05/2026 23:10

Its perfectly legal to take creatine abroad. However it should be in its original packaging. This is because a white powder in an unmarked plastic bag is a red flag. You could chance it but I'd put it in a different container.i.e. a travel bottle. At the end of the day, five days without it won't be a problem.

metalstrawsarecoldbutnotsoggy · 17/05/2026 23:27

I’ve not done it in hand luggage or with powder, but I’ve done it with pills (magnesium) in a zip lock bag (labelled magnesium in sharpie)in the hold luggage. Also done it with matcha latte powder but that was green. 🤪

Please try it and tell us the outcome!

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 17/05/2026 23:45

I will go against the grain and say you’ll be fine.

They will pull ypur backpack aside and ask ypu to retrieve the powder. They’ll test in with a special machine they have and then let you have it back.

True story:
I was travelling with 5 boiled eggs with no shells on as a snack in a ikea bag like yours. I took them because I did not want to leave them in my fridge. They pulled my backpack aside and did what I described above.

At another time, this time funnier. My cousin is a baker and I took in my backpack a pack of marzipan 1kg. As you can imagine, it resembles a brick of cocaine so that one got the same treatment.

For children travelling with boiled water or premade milk bottles they can go through security but they put them in the machine too.

And last one. This happened to my dad, he was travelling with a perfume I gifted to him, 100ml. Should not have been a problem, only there was as the liquid had the same colour blue from when drugs are tested and reactive. It got checked too with the aforementioned machine.

All passed, except for a bottle of strawberry syrup my daughter stowed away in her backpack, bless her.

Juliadiesalone · 17/05/2026 23:48

Oh give over. If they’re worried they’ll test it and it’ll take 2 mins. It’s fine. If it’s not illegal - which it’s not - of course it’s fine

Juliadiesalone · 17/05/2026 23:49

I mean I’ve accidentally actually travelled with cocaine and no one noticed. They don’t care unless you’re a dealer. And you’re not

They don't taste it!

Sorry I just realised there's a typo in my first message.

They will test it not taste it!

As if you'd take a bag of white powder through customs 😂
You'd have to be crackers.
