Would I be an idiot to take this through airport security?

I have recently started taking creatine and am finding it so beneficial. I am going away for 5 nights next week and want to take some with me. The packet it comes in is massive. Would I be stupid to take some in a small plastic bag like this in my hand luggage ( I don’t have a hold bag) or will I be detained?

It's not life saving medicine. Unless you are going on expedition to Antarctica you can buy supplies anywhere now. Do that when you get there.

I sense a bit of a wind up here though. 😊

HoldMyWine · 16/05/2026 12:50

No not a wind up, maybe a bit tongue in cheek as when I did decant I thought it does look dodgy. Where I am going is very remote so I don’t think I’ll be able to buy it there. I’ll have to do without for a few days. It won’t kill me!

I’ve taken protein powder in a small Tupperware a few times with no issues. It’s a larger quantity than yours.

Could you get some in Boots airside or click and collect - that's past security. It will have full packaging and receipt if there are issues on arrival.

EmeraldRoulette · 16/05/2026 13:04

@HoldMyWine I have to ask

How long are you away for? And what is so good about it that you don't want to go without it for however long? I know a lot of people are taking it at the moment.

TheKittenswithMittens · 16/05/2026 13:06

Coke is sometimes cut with creatine.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 16/05/2026 13:09

I think it would be fine, surely they would swab it like they do formula and water in children’s drink bottles. I did once have my babies ibuprofen fail the test though so it’s not impossible that it would fail and be confiscated.

ANEC · 16/05/2026 13:11

If you’re worried about being questioned about said bag why don’t you put it in a condom and swallow it? 😂
if you have to ask a daft question you’ll get a daft answer, muppet.

Mix56 · 16/05/2026 13:15

You can travel with meds, ideally with the prescription, & original packaging. but this is not a good idea !

Aprilgorgeousness · 16/05/2026 13:16

I think it would be fine, especially if she actually brings it up herself when putting bits into the X-ray tray and bringing it up, plus they can tested and the machine will see through anyways…
She won’t be hiding it in her undies!

They will just do a swab test and you'll be fine.

somanychristmaslights · 16/05/2026 13:21

For 5 nights, I wouldn’t bother. It’s not as though taking creatine for 5 days is going to make a massive difference

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 16/05/2026 13:21

I wouldn’t bother. You can take a 5 night break from any supplement, it really won’t make a difference to your health.

It’s made a big difference to my energy levels, more than anything. I’ve also started weight training and it helps with muscle recovery, again not so tired and less achy.

Ah Snappy you’ve got it!!! Receipt to Security it is!! Are you my daughter she’s the only one who can understand my rubbish texts!

On mummset I have to edit my posts about a million times before posting! So they make sense!!

The trick is to read your message and edit it before posting/hitting send.

Yes it’s not worth the hassle is it?
Thanks everyone for your replies.

I would take random unidentified pills but not random powders unless in their original packaging. Even then I wouldn’t bother taking creatine on holiday for a few days, I would just take a tube of electrolyte tablets instead

MPforTitipu · 16/05/2026 13:31

I can't see a problem. I take a small picnic pepper pot full of talc, various vitamin tablets in small plastic bags and even a few Melatonin tablets in a small plastic bag, usually in hand luggage, every time I fly. I've never been stopped or searched or swabbed or questioned.

hahabahbag · 16/05/2026 13:34

Medication needs to be original packaging with a back up prescription or for non prescription needs to be in appropriate packaging plus must not be a prescription only item in that country. No I would not take white powder in a zip lock bag!

TheKittenswithMittens · 16/05/2026 13:38

Coke is even better for energy levels - so a mate told me.

It’s fine honestly, I travel multiple times a year with others to sports events and everyone’s hand luggage is full of small bags of pills and white powder. Just declare it upfront, put it front and centre on the tray and security will swab it if so inclined.

AltitudeCheck · 16/05/2026 13:43

Why not fill your ziploc bag(s) with all the excess and just take 5 days supply in the original bag? It will pack very flat, almost like a sheet of paper and take up hardly any space in your luggage but look way less suspicious.

Sheggsie · 16/05/2026 13:44

My son ended up with blood in his urine taking creatine. Lots of invasive medical intervention to find out what it was. He wasn’t taking huge amounts but he couldn’t tolerate it.

TonyGallaSoInLoveNsoul · 16/05/2026 13:48

Aye a bag of unidentified white powder
You'll be fine.
