Would I be an idiot to take this through airport security?

I have recently started taking creatine and am finding it so beneficial. I am going away for 5 nights next week and want to take some with me. The packet it comes in is massive. Would I be stupid to take some in a small plastic bag like this in my hand luggage ( I don’t have a hold bag) or will I be detained?

I take little baggies of laundry powder all the time on planes. Never even been questioned on it.

cvgji · 16/05/2026 16:43

sure, if you fancy an orifice search instead of a glass of wine before take off, go for it!

gokusgirl · 16/05/2026 20:02

I take creatine and collegen everywhere. Never been a problem. They can test it.

Carry-on: Small amounts are usually fine, but powders over about 12 oz / 350 mL can trigger extra screening. Security may swab or inspect the container.

White powder? Definitely not in case you want to get detained. Vitamins and so on, fine.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/05/2026 20:22

I’ve just seen you’ll be fine, so go ahead! I’ve never done this (powder) so I have no idea!

Some of the answers on here are so dramatic! 🙄
Im cabin crew and I always (along with about 30% of the crew at my airline) have collagen, creatine and protein powders in my carryon that I've decanted in to small 'Tupperware' type tubs or zip lock bags. In 8 years of flying I've never once been questioned about it. Some destinations (from the top of my head the US and Australia) limit the quantity of powder you can carry as hand luggage so you couldn't take a full tub anyway. Even if you were stopped, they'd just swab it or run it through a machine to test it and it obviously would not flag up as an illegal substance.

WarrenHouse · 16/05/2026 20:53

Bad idea

dymantisparkelhorniments · 16/05/2026 20:55

I take my collagen in a little tupperware tub in my hand luggage and it's never been checked

As a side note can I ask what you find so beneficial? I’ve been taking it but not noticed anything??

Thank you that’s helpful, on that case I might give it a go

You can buy single-dose sachets of creatine

Imalittleelf · 16/05/2026 21:06

I remember having loose tea bags in my hold bag and I had a note left inside to say my bag had been searched but nothing was removed.... I had to giggle when I realised why.

TheSmallPurple · 16/05/2026 21:10

I voted you'll be fine because I have taken vitamin C powder on multiple flights & never had a problem, other things have been confiscated but not once has anyone asked what the unidentified white powder in a tub is.

BashfulClam · 16/05/2026 21:15

I got my bag pulled on both outbound and inbound and had my bags swabbed this week. (I must look dodgy). They will be able to swab it there and then. What made me laugh was when they asked ‘is it ok to take a swab?’ I’m not likely to say no! They took the samples and put it in a machine at security!

ShakyBake · 16/05/2026 21:16

This reminds me of the story of the man who had hemoroids whilst on holiday and when asked by customs if he had a nice trip relied 'ok apart from this crack in my ass' and then missed his flight whilst he had an intimate search

You can get small single serve sachets on Amazon (and presumably other places) I personally would get these and take them instead.

Unfortunately too late for this trip unless Holland and Barret have some tomorrow but will definitely get them for next time

I travel all the time and take collagen powder decanted into a small bag. Never had a problem and never been stopped. I take it in my handbag.

itsasmallworldafteralll · 16/05/2026 22:07

Of course it’s fine. They know what they’re doing. They can identify and test powders etc. to pp who think they’ll call the police, really? They’d be wasting their time all day long. The only time I’d reconsider would be in a developing country where I didn’t speak the language and wasn’t sure of their technology. Just because I wouldn’t want any confusion.

HornyHornersPinger · 16/05/2026 22:25

I think you'll be fine, I'd probably try and get the label off the packet/tub to put on the bag though. The have machines/sniffer dogs to identify illegal substances.

TidyLurker · 16/05/2026 22:46

I have literally just travelled with creatine and collagen in hand baggage today, it was only an internal uk flight. I left it in the original bags, which when you squeeze the air out, pack really flat. My bag went through the scanner no problem. No extra checks or anything.

Wallywobbles · 16/05/2026 22:49

I travel with it like that all the time. Never ever an issue.

Frugalgal · 17/05/2026 00:59

What's so good about it?? I've got some I've never got round to starting it. Must be good stuff if you can't go five days without it..

Coke is sometimes cut with creatine.

And the sophisticated spectroscopy equipment at any UK airport will pick that up.
