Holiday Monday here for BC Day.
Slept until 9:30;
vacuumed quite thoroughly moving the couches and getting the dc to wipe the floor and baseboards in the living room and dining room;
load of laundry washed and hung up including a pair of my runners which went to dry on the boot dryer;
cleaned the bathroom and washed floor;
got my mum's IV meds done;
fed dc breakfast and lunch and we went out late afternoon to playground for almost 3 hours and a friend joined us, so had a good catch-up.
Stopped at grocery store on the way home for just two items.
Once home gave the kids a bath then I had a quick bath and made dinner. Lights out at 9pm, but kids weren't asleep until 10:30.
I suspect overtired. Me, too, I guess because it's after 11:30pm and I'm scrolling...🙄

Hello all. A quiet thread this week. Hope everyone is ok.

My get up and go appears to have gotten up and gone. So it’s been a quiet week. Normal chores done but not much else. Haven’t felt motivated to do anything. And that’s ok.

Decision on lampshade was made. I went with the bold choice. It was between a blue patterned shade on a dark blue ceramic lamp base. Or a coral patterned shade. Went with the coral. DH not convinced.

Hope everyone has a good Saturday.

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 08/08/2026 14:36

Hi @Peridot1 and everyone! I had just come on here to post 😊 I'm at the airport waiting to go back to the UK. Had a very cup-filling time with family and friends (of 30yrs standing!) so I am feeling very refreshed despite the burning temperatures. I had a couple of days at my parents' house after the beach so most of my laundry is done.
Next week is a normal work week while D is at holiday club, but we also have some plumbing work and carpentry happening over the week so it will be a bit of a juggle!

Wildfire smoke has lifted quite a bit and Havoc's activity went well today. 😅
Got my mum's IV done and pancakes with strawberries made once home again. ✅👩‍🍳👩‍⚕️💉

Plan is to get cleaned up and get the kids out asap for the rest of the afternoon. 🤞
But, feeling laaaaazy...

Hi all- safe travels for you @SingleThreadJoiner2 . Thanks I hope that the wildfire smoke clears completely soon @Mumtobabyhavoc

Love the idea of coral @Peridot1 !

We leave tomorrow. I'm tired,. it's been a stressful and depleting trip. The mother is okay thankfully but I am in the mode of feeling guilt at being so far away and leaving again.

But my biggest decision today is if I choose to buy airport lounge passes or use frequent flyer points.

Looking forward to getting back though. I saw a friend yesterday and it just didn't seem to work. Our lives have drifted so far apart. So I need to put some more e-mailing and calling effort in.

Otherwise, we are well and mother is able to go out today for a farewell lunch with us so that's good.

Hugs to all and hope everyone is fine and loved ones also. Thanks

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/08/2026 06:34

Lobelia, right now it's roughly 4pm Sunday for you, I think, and am unsure (with the time difference) if you are leaving or have left for the UK, so sending you good wishes for a safe an easy trip. 💕
I feel your mixed emotions, too. 💐

I had the kids out all day at a neighbourhood festival and it was quite nice. It wasn't super crowded, or super hot and the various food trucks and grills must've had alternate power, electric hook-up's I think, because it wasn't noisy and hot from generators, so that was nice. The kids spent an hour at a music studio's booth trying a violin, ukulele and various drums, shakers and tambourines. We walked the entire festival length, which was about a kilometre/5 blocks, or so, then back to the car via a lovely and quiet tree-lined neighbourhood where it seemed every other house had a tree-swing out front. It was a late dinner after I got us all washed up in the tub as baths were very much needed after an afternoon out walking in the heat & then some time at the playground before the drive home.
It was such a good day out with my kids and I'm feeling so in love with them. 💕

No chores, but I will turn on the dishwasher before I get into bed. 😁

eta. Just got tv news on. It's all about the devastation from the fires. It's been every summer, worse each year since 2015, I think.

@FourSeasonsLobelia safe travels, I'm glad that the trip has at least ended on a better note than how it started. It is so hard being away - I'm an only child so full on guilt!

@Mumtobabyhavoc sounds lovely!

Task for today is clearing up all the Legos on the floor so the plumber can get to the water tanks tomorrow morning.... 😬 😬😬

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/08/2026 09:43

Forgot to turn dishwasher on, but I did wash the floors and some walls. At midnight. It's now after 1:30am and I've got a doc on. 🤦‍♀️
Not particularly smart of me. I need to sleep.

I do like to live on the edge @Mumtobabyhavoc! Even if it’s just deciding on lampshades!

Safe travels back @FourSeasonsLobelia. It’s always so hard to leave even if you are happy where you are.

Glad you had a nice time at home @SingleThreadJoiner2.

We went to a party yesterday for a friend’s birthday. He is an amazing cook so the food was excellent. Didn’t stay late as our neighbour was driving and we left when they did and also because today is village bbq which DH is organising. And it’s going to be 30 degrees…..

Not much will be done today due to bbq.

Quite a lot to do next week though so lists will be needed….

Have a great Sunday all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2026 08:33

So, I've just been down the Facebook rabbit hole. It's been at least 4 years since I've logged in, maybe longer, and I cannot believe I remembered the password.
I found a friend from high school who passed away about 5 years ago. I Googled him a couple of years ago after finding a letter he had written to me when we were just 15 and he moved across country. I never saw him again. He became a chef.
I looked at the page of my late cousin who died a few years ago and her husband who also passed away a few months after her. Itcwas shocking. Both had chronic medical conditions.
I looked at my bff's page for a bit, but it was a bit too much even though she passed away several years ago now, too.
And, I saw that another cousin, much older, died earlier this year. That was a shocker. I will have to tell my mum about it. I'm sure we didn't know about it.
And then I checked out some other pages of people I used to know.

In orher news: I washed and hung up a large load of laundry and turned the dishwasher on.

OP posts:
Peridot1 · 10/08/2026 11:26

That sounds like a lot to take in @Mumtobabyhavoc.

I’m feeling a bit shattered today after a busy weekend. Village bbq yesterday and it was HOT. 30 degrees. Went well though. I was very sensible and after a welcome drink glass of prosecco I stuck to water. (Not like me!). After coming home for the car (we are a few minutes walk away) and bringing home all of the paraphernalia and a gazebo I went back to the pub and we sat with some friends and neighbours and had a few drinks. Nice and relaxing end to the weekend.

Taking it a bit easy today. Have done a load of my laundry and am about to get DS’s. Dishwasher is on. Photo of the lost property bits we found left at the bbq up on the village WhatsApp group and owners identified. Reservation made for dinner out on Friday night to celebrate DS finishing his current job before he starts new job next week.

Tasks to do -

  • menu plan for the week so DH can finish supermarket order
  • clear out fridge
  • arrange for ironing to be picked up
  • dust coffee table and side tables in sitting area

Have a good day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/08/2026 19:25

Peridot, and I woke up to a text that a friend's partner died overnight. He had a sudden illness, but was due to come home, so obviously things took an unexpected turn.

Have got my mum on the 2nd IV and it's almost done. Put towels in a long wash with a lot of bleach, so have just put them through a 2nd wash to ensure it's all rinsed out.
Wiped kitchen floor of crumbs.
Made bed.
I'm grasping a bit to show productivity ...

OP posts:
Peridot1 · 11/08/2026 11:50

I am sorry to hear that @Mumtobabyhavoc. Always a shock.

I am feeling more productive today than I have for a while. Was up early which always helps.

I do need to do most of what was on yesterday’s list though as menu plan and dusting were not done. I cleared the fridge out this morning.

Today -

  • Clear out fridge - done
  • dishwasher - done
  • walk - done
  • laundry - black wash of mine done, coloured wash on, two small washes for DS done. All sounds inefficient I know but new stuff so not sure of colour fastness. All quick washes.
  • vacuum
  • menu plan
  • dust coffee table and side tables
  • water trees

Have a good day all.

Popping on to say I am on holiday and also the debit card went missing before we came down 🤣 plus ca change 🤣

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 12/08/2026 11:09

Hello all. Work is unexpectedly busy so H has been doing all the necessary jobs - room was cleared to allow water tank access, and he's also been collecting many things to go to the tip. I am very grateful!
All I really have been doing apart from work is sorting out next year's after school clubs etc.
Kitchen being replaced from the end of the month so lots tidying and sorting and packing up looming...

Peridot1 · 12/08/2026 11:15

Have a great holiday @watchPhone. 😀 At the debit card shenanigans again.

I did most of yesterday’s list except for the coffee table.

Today:

  • tidy upstairs for cleaner - done
  • dishwasher - done
  • clean kitchen sinks and counters- done
  • coffee pods - done
  • towel wash - on
  • utility room - tidy surfaces
  • utility room clear floor and vacuum and wash
  • pack some returns to be sent back to various places

Just having a quick coffee before the utility room jobs.

Have a great day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/08/2026 19:56

Managed to get into the garden last night.
Tomato plants planted by kindly neighbour growing aggressively. Hacked them back just as aggressively. Bastards.

Lettuce is still producing, but has pretty much maxed out as has gone to seed on the top

Picked a zucchini.

Today:
Got kids breakfast. Back to bed and lied down scrolling 30 mins.
Took a call re a legal matter I am researching. Had hospital calling in during it, tried to interrupt to say I had urgent call and needed to go, person ignored, tried again, person ignored, I yelled into phone, I HAVE AN EMERGENCY CALL ON THE OTHER LINE AND HAVE TO HANG UP.
Took hospital call trying to sort specialist follow-up appt and trying for phone appt as in-person is at 8:45am which would be very difficult (me on 4-5h sleep, get kids ready, help my mum, load/unload car, driving/parking) and would mean getting up around 6am. I have to draw a boundary somewhere. Next option was in September, but Havoc has gradual entry for school, so I'll be dropping-off and picking-up at different times in the morning to afternoon for a couple of weeks PLUS taking Baby to parent-participation pre-school. Add in other medical appointments my mum will need, mine, the kids (still need to book our wye exams) and my day is maxed.

Anyway, got my mum on her IV, then the 2nd one, mopped the floors after Baby peed as no diaper in as am toilet-training, so doing bare-bum at home.

Made oatmeal for the kids' 2nd meal and my mum's1st. Made coffee then toast for myself.
Typing this out on the 15-min break I've given myself. My alarm just went off and my mum has called to me the IV is done. I need to check Havoc's bum as just had a poo and Baby has a diaper on now and I can smell it is full 💩

Part 2:

Got everyone fed, ready and i to the car by 12:30pm. Drove to pharmacy to pick-up medication and an injection for my mum. Took 30-ish mins. Drove to med appt, 20 mins. Parked and got everyone out and to doctor's office 2 mins before 1:30pm appt. 😅
Medical lab was next.
Done by 2:30pm. ✅
Drove to paint store, obtained discount for being a member of BCAA 🥳 Bought can of paint, roller brushes and pack of painter's tape.
Drove to shopping plaza and saw a niche grocery store I liked was gone. 😢
Went to pharmacy/mini grocery and bought an 8-pack of Perrier grapefruit, cake -mix and a tub of frosting to make for fun with the kids at some point.
Drove home in massive traffic and that took about 45mins. 😣
Ran into neighbour, chatted re legal matter
and neighbour is going to help out. 🙌
Made a quick and reliable dinner:
frozen salmon fillet, spread pesto on top and baked: chopped up zucchini from garden and tossed in evoo, s&p and garlic powder, added to baking tray. Meanwhile boiled up some pasta which I just tossed in evoo and pepper.
Kids had two helpings. 🏆🙌
My mum is tidying kitchen.
I've got Paddington on tv having pvr'd it. ✅
Havoc and Baby want to make the cupcakes, so I had better get on that before I fade.
I'm having a 2nd Perrier. (Wild person that I am).

News was showing your eclipse. Anyone watch it safely? Don't tell me if you glanced at it with your baked eye. I have already posted tonnes of safety info on another thread and couldn't take it if any of you lovely lot watched it or snuck a peek without proper viewing glasses. 😮

Aah you had a busy and rather stressful day @Mumtobabyhavoc . I hope so much you can rest and have some breathing space for yourself. Thanks

I just LOVE the idea of cooking my own home grown zucchini.

Hope the legal thing is okay. Thanks

Eclipse- I can confirm that at Chez Lobelia we were super safe. Smile . DH is a science-y fan and he made us pinhole cameras. I just liked looking at the gloaming (one of my favourite under-used words)* that resulted. We have a huge lilac tree in our garden and birds came and just sat through it.... it was very interesting.

I'm back home now and jetlag has got me. Yesterday I wasn't terribly functional so i sat and watched youtube videos, ordered takeaway and rang a friend. I did sort out a tax snafu with the council though. The resulting savings was then promptly wiped out by a parking charge. Today i need to sort out other things with tax.

Hope everyone is well and fine. @Mumtobabyhavoc you have loads on your plate, take care. Thanks

*my other favourite underused word is 'sennight'. I'm on a one-woman mission to bring that back to common parlance. No idea why it fell out of favour when we still use fortnight, but there it is.

That is fantastic @Mumtobabyhavoc !!

I have never understood the sweet potao and marshmallow thing.... but that said, when I make roasted sweet potatoes I usually top them with brown sugar, tinned pineapple chunks and cinnamon. They just lend themselves to sweet.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/08/2026 10:30

I've just watched another. Those kids are awesome.
I like Chinese 5 spice to season sweet potatoes. I struggle to wrap my head around adding anything sweet. 🤷‍♀️Having said that, as a dessert, sweet potato pie, done in the style of pumpkin pie, is the exception, for me.

I need to go to sleep. It's now 2:30am. 🤦‍♀️

That was a busy day @Mumtobabyhavoc!

Welcome home @FourSeasonsLobelia. Hope the jet lags settles quickly.

We didn’t have eclipse glasses but ended up at our neighbours for an impromptu eclipse get together with some others from the village and one couple brought glasses. So we were all able to have a look safely. Even DS and our neighbour’s grandson were impressed.

Most of yesterday’s tasks were done except coffee table and utility room surfaces.

Today we are getting a new bed delivered for DS so will be sorting his room out shortly so the guys can get in and dismantle his current bed and assemble the new one. Paid extra to have them do it all and take the old bed away. So that will all be this morning’s tasks once I’ve finished my breakfast and cup of tea.

We have home grown zucchini too. DH insists on planting them but then isn’t keen on actually eating them….. going to try to do some on the bbq this evening.

Have a great day all.
