That’s amazing news about your mum @FourSeasonsLobelia . She seems to have recovered remarkably well.
In the spirit of projecteering I’ve cracked on with jobs today:

  • changed over to the autumn weight duvet and put the heated under blanket on the bed when I changed the linen
  • descaled the kettle and ran a dishwasher cleaner
  • sent two birthday cards and a condolence card
  • ordered the fabric for the new bedroom curtains
Peridot1 · 13/10/2026 11:54

That’s really good news about your mum @FourSeasonsLobelia. Hope they have a lovely holiday.

Sounds like a productive day @petalpower.

Yesterday I changed my bed, tried on jumpers as part of summer/winter wardrobe changeover and sorted a few to go.

Today is a slow day. Pub quiz last night with too much wine…..

I have finished washing bedding, doing a normal laundry load, tried on some things I ordered from M&S and am trying to decide what to do next… might vacuum and wash floors. This afternoon I’m finishing my jumper project. Also how many sweatshirts does one person need? (Asking for a friend.)

WintersFrog · 13/10/2026 12:52

Your Thanksgiving meal sounds delicious @Mumtobabyhavoc 😋

I'm glad you are feeling more yourself @FourSeasonsLobelia and great to hear about your mum 💕

The time will fly by @petalpower and I'm sure you'll get loads done!

I am about to have some lunch then I have grand plans for the afternoon which include getting prints of some favourite photos.

Feeling quite motivated and even did some ironing this morning. Need to sort out clothes too @Peridot1. I wear the same ones on repeat and I'm feeling inspired to smarten up my look as we head towards winter.

Best wishes to all!

Aria999 · 13/10/2026 13:29

glad to hear your mum is doing well @FourSeasonsLobeliaand that the kids have calmed down a bit. Yes I agree it's good to remind them you are a person too from time to time!

@Peridot1i was seriously contemplating shuffling my wardrobe the last couple weeks but we are back to highs of 26 today. The weather here always does this and I never fail to be caught off guard by it. I did order some 'airplane two piece' sets though ie those posh matching pjs you see people wearing for travel.

projects I need to get on with:

  • check if chimney is functional in dining room with the idea of installing a gas fire
  • get concrete steps out front fixed
  • send back a dressing gown that I ordered first in a size too big and then a size too small....
Aria999 · 13/10/2026 18:26

a win on the dressing gown. I drove the 20 minutes to take both versions to the store and they let me return the one I bought in July despite being against their returns policy.

I had intended to get the intermediate size (L/Xl was like a tent and S/M literally did not meet in the middle) but apparently M/L doesn't actually exist so I returned empty handed apart from the refunded $$$

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/10/2026 03:25

Frustrating on those sizes, Aria.

Very chilly here, cloudy, lightly raining and about 14c, although it feels cooler.
Managed a load of laundry washed and hung up this afternoon after taking my mum to/from a hospital appt. Just making dinner, have made us all hot chocolate with marshmallows and dashed out to the garden and picked rosemary, tomatoes and green beans.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 14/10/2026 07:10

Morning all.

Busy day for you @Mumtobabyhavoc

Thanks everyone for good wishes about my mother. She really has recovered remarkably well. DH calls her 'Lazarus'. She has weekly rehab sessions * and is very serious about her exercises at home. Sadly though, her beloved little dog died a couple of weeks back. She had been desperate to try and get better so she could return to her walks.

Today is a regular day where I have to get on top of the housework. Ive discovered vinted I am afraid and have some washing to do of various clothes that arrived yesterday. I'm buying shirts mostly for DS1's 'business attire' he needs for his A-level uniform. He has 8 of various colours now so I might need to address my developing addiction. Grin

*when DS1 overheard me telling DH my mother was going to rehab' he looked horrified and said; 'What has she been doing?'.

WintersFrog · 14/10/2026 07:24

Oh @FourSeasonsLobelia that comment from your lad did make me laugh 🤣 Sorry about mum's dog 😟

Argh clothes sizing @Aria999! I feel your pain! Here it's often 8-10 and 12-14 etc and everything is either too tight or swamps me.

Hot chocolate and marshmallows! You know how to live @Mumtobabyhavoc 😋 Hope your mum is doing ok.

Today I must hem some trousers as the wonder web stuff I've been using keeps disintegrating in the wash. I have spotted some cobwebs so will tackle those and i have noticed that the banister rails are a bit grimy so will tackle those too. Those can be my projects.

Peridot1 · 14/10/2026 10:23

Morning all.

Sorry about your mum’s dog @FourSeasonsLobelia. Laughing at your DS’s assumption though!

@Aria999 - I would love it to be 26 here. We are definitely autumnal now. Although bright and sunny here this morning.

@WintersFrog - I tend to live in leggings and sweatshirts day to day in winter and I’m bored with it. So trying to smarten up a bit. Having said that I’m wearing gym leggings and a long sleeved top now…. I also had way too many clothes in various sizes so a good clear out was due.

Today’s list:

  • dishwasher etc
  • laundry - load on
  • floors
  • walk
  • pop into pub to pay bill we forgot to pay on Monday 🙄😳
  • deal with fruit flies
  • continue wardrobe sorting
Have a great day all.
RunningKatie · 14/10/2026 17:31

Hello all, checking in despite not achieving much at all.
Bathroom is finished but we're not filled with delight. The tiling is quite amateurish which is not what we paid for. Need to decide what to do.
House alarm is playing up, I sent an email and they've not replied so I need to actually call them.
Working again this weekend, when half term comes around I fear I'll be a wreck, thank heavens we're taking the week off.
Got leaving drinks on Fri for a treasured colleague, I am so sad they are going, it's very political so it's not a fun place at the moment.

Peridot1 · 14/10/2026 18:05

Oh that’s such a shame about the tiling @RunningKatie. Can they re-do it? It’s awful when things go wrong like that. We have had some issues with things we got done and it is so annoying. So much money to spend and to get a slap dash finish is maddening.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/10/2026 20:52

How frustrating, Katie.

I managed to get pass along a box of baby/toddler toys to a neighbour yesterday.
Still need to re-sort, re-pack and list box of clothes I'm donating 🙄 But making a small dent in tasks. 🐌

Spent the morning as a classroom helper in Havoc's class. The kids were so cute and the teachers seem great. As I was leaving they went out for recess and I saw one kid shove Havoc, then shove, trip and push Havoc to the ground. So, I ran over and yelled at the kid to stop, told another to get the playground monitor, told them what happened, went back to tell their teacher and then had a call with the other mum. I told her it looked like a martial arts throw and she said the child is in martial arts, but has been told not to use it at school. The call went well and Havoc went back to class without asking for me. Jesus. 😵‍💫

OP posts:
petalpower · 14/10/2026 22:39

That sounds really disappointing @RunningKatie . Not what you had hoped for and indeed paid for.
I’m cracking on with jobs:

  • booked a recycling centre slot to drop the broken ironing board
  • 3 baskets of ironing (I think it secretly breeds when I’m not looking)
  • contacted a local taxi company for an airport run quote
  • made a doctors appointment that I’ve been putting off for a very long time
  • bought new lampshades for our bedroom
  • handwashed a top that has been at the bottom of the laundry basket for a while
  • read DD’s draft masters dissertation to check for typos, punctuation etc.
I also had a lovely lunch out with a friend which was a real treat.
WintersFrog · 15/10/2026 07:18

Well played @Mumtobabyhavoc! Mama bear 🐻

I've been sitting outside since six. I'm like an old woman on the veranda, just need a rocking chair. It's lovely watching and hearing the day begin. Several lots of geese have flown over in that V formation.

Sorry about the tiles and the work politics @RunningKatie 😔

I'm attempting to smarten up a bit too @Peridot1 I threw out a couple of comfortable but misshapen jumpers the other day. I try to keep a capsule wardrobe but it's spread, much like books and clutter recently. I've also channelled my inner @petalpower with a few linked errands, which pleases me. I have yet to wear out an ironing board but I am trying to do a bit more.

Currently contemplating how hard to lean into Christmas this year. Will keep it very simple - must start reading A Calm Christmas....was it our own @RunningKatie who recommended it on here?

I'm off for a swim, then I'm working out and about this morning. Then we're away for a long weekend first thing tomorrow so I need to get packed and get the house ship shape.

Have a good day all ☕️ 🍰

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/10/2026 07:47

Thanks, Winter. We had cookies once home and a nice dinner.

What do you typically do for Christmas?
Have you given any thought to an alternate menu instead of the usual fare? I've been doing duck and roasted veg then build your own ice cream sundaes for dessery which works quite well.

OP posts:
FourSeasonsLobelia · 15/10/2026 08:30

Aaahhh!!! Christmas! 😩

That must have been an awful experience @Mumtobabyhavoc . Hopefully Havoc is okay. Thanks But how scary- good you witnessed it I think too.

I was just talking with our lovely cleaner about Christmas. We agreed it's exhausting. She has the most gorgeous little grandson and I love getting him toys though. DH has been vegetarian for years now so I usually get him a nut roast of some sort. Last year I went (mostly) vegetarian with a whole lot of slips and sadly waited until the last minute to buy provisions and ended up with a parsnip tart from a supermarket that was literally the last veg offering on the shelf. It was dreadful so i need to be on the ball this year. I love the idea of roasted duck though. That would have been right up my street.

I've hurt my back today so am about to go back to bed with the electric blanket on and do life admin from bed. Bill paying mostly. [groan]

So sorry @RunningKatie about your tiling. That must be so frustrating and disappointing.

Hugs to everyone.

watchPhone · 15/10/2026 12:16

Morning!

@RunningKatie - that is so annoying about the tiles. I would complain,

Is it Thursday already?! Finally got to the tip having managed to park as close to my house as I could 😄 So, the wardrobe has gone. Also managed to caulk around the edging in the bathroom for skirting boards. It looks very swish. Bedroom (Some) fine cracks filled and sanded. Old picture hooks removed, filled and sanded.
Today

  • i need to find some sandpaper - maybe the job lot I bought from Amazon ages ago for the mouse sander might have the grit I need; OK nope need to order some more - done
  • rescue some wood glue from the shed for the bed (and try not to glue myself to it 😃 - the shed or the bed)
  • arrange to see my niece-in-law (is that a thing) to give her her 40th birthday present - the weekend it is.
  • empty the dishwasher
  • clean up after SpiritDoggo's first ever shower in the new-ish bathroom (as an aside - she is very clever, before bathroom reno, if you said 'go in the bath!' she'd run up to the bathroom, sit in front of the bath to be (reluctantly hauled) lifted in, now when you say 'go in the bath!' she goes IN THE SHOWER CUBICLE and sits facing the shower, even though it is in a different place)
  • desk - tidy
  • a day of meetings from hell - also know as the week from hell.
My get up and go has got up and gone, so I will finish there, have a good one, SoE
Aria999 · 15/10/2026 13:43

Morning all!

I love nut roast @FourSeasonsLobelia! I used to have a great recipe for it in my vegetarian teenage years but have lost it.

ah @RunningKatiethat is upsetting about the tiles. Annoying for any piece of work when you have been looking forward to liking it but especially tiles which are so hard to redo without getting new tiles. I hope you can make them do it again? Stressful but probably worth it or they may annoy you for years. Sorry to hear work is stressful as well.

I missed your change of username @watchPhone👋 SoE!

i'm pursuing my CPD today as the deadline is October!

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 15/10/2026 14:49

Flying by, in the midst of a health crisis with FIL, in hospital, unclear if can be helped or moving to palliative care.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/10/2026 14:58

Sending support Single. 💐

Alarm has just gone off. Don't want to get up. Very tired here. Ugh. It's dark and 8c.

OP posts:
petalpower · 15/10/2026 17:30

I was up at 6 too for an early dog walk @WintersFrog . My dog walking friend had a hospital appointment to get to so we met an hour earlier than normal. It was surprisingly dark at 7 when we met!
Sorry to hear about your FIL @SingleThreadJoiner2 . It must be an age thing but this week I’ve had friends moving parents in nursing homes, friends with FIL going to a hospice for palliative care, another friend whose FIL had a stroke and another whose dad is in hospital awaiting cancer test results.
Well done on the tip run @watchPhone . I’m eyeing things up to take with my broken ironing board when I go next week!
How’s your back feeling @FourSeasonsLobelia ?
Hope Havoc gets on ok at school today @Mumtobabyhavoc . Fingers crossed it’s an isolated incident.
Achievements today:

  • 14 pages of minutes written for a charity I’m a trustee of
  • friend’s dog let out and quick visit to local shop in the same trip
  • menu planning and associated online shop for Saturday’s delivery
  • remainder of potatoes dug up; squash and pumpkins harvested and stored; tomato plants taken down and green tomatoes put on the windowsill to hopefully ripen
  • chimney sweep is now here
FourSeasonsLobelia · 16/10/2026 08:13

I am so sorry to hear about yor FIL @SingleThreadJoiner2 . I hope all goes well. thinking of you. Thanks

Thanks @petalpower my back has eased somewhat. It's just a recurrence of the old arthritis, bursitis pain and the day before I drove for nearly 3 hours thanks to road works and detours so I stffened up. I have to do the same today so will take an ibuprofen before I go I think.

Today plan to buy some new curtain tie backs for the bathroom curtains. Very exciting! That's it for projects but I also have to do a wash load also.

Hope everyone has a lovely an peaceable day.

Peridot1 · 16/10/2026 09:51

Good morning all.

Sorry to hear about your FIL @SingleThreadJoiner2.

Poor Havoc @Mumtobabyhavoc. Horrible seeing your child be hurt by another.

We have been thinking about Christmas too. I have a friend in the village with a terminal cancer diagnosis who may not make Christmas and it has really made me realise that life can be really shorter than we think. So we have just booked for my best friend to come over for Christmas from Australia. She has never had an English Christmas and our Christmas can be quite flat with just the three of us. So DH said book her a ticket.

I had a biggish list yesterday and ticked a few things off. Changed DS’s bed, washed utility room floor, packed up some John Lewis returns to go Waitrose, sorted out my new phone. DS got a new one so I got his hand me down.

Today’s list:

  • dishwasher and kitchen
  • change a bed
  • walk
  • wash kitchen floor
  • possible M&S trip to drop off some returns
  • some more wardrobe sorting
  • charity drop off

Have a great day all.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 16/10/2026 14:42

That is exciting news about your friend coming over @Peridot1 !

I bought my curtain tie backs. Then went wild and bought a ceramic soap dish as well. I think that's enough for one day!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/10/2026 19:44

Managed to vacuum and take out kitchen garbage after school drop-off this morning. Just about to get ready to take my mum to hospital appt. Might drop in for early voting for our provincial elections for premier.

Havoc seems ok. Sat together and watched some "bully-proof" kids' vids this morning. Same two kids that pushed Havoc (two separate incidents a week apart) targeted two other kids yesterday. So, teaching Havoc how to deal with all aspects including being a good witness and how to help others if safe.
