Would you recognise Bagpuss?

I, born 1970, have him on a Tshirt.

DS, born 2003, has no idea, fair enough.

But, BF, born 1977, swears he's never heard of him.

There's only 7 years between us, it feels like a generational gulf!

Born in 1978, he’s a key part of my childhood

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/04/2026 17:12

I would (and Professor Yaffle) but I was born in 1960!

Lyonesse2020 · 16/04/2026 17:19

Absolutely - I'm humming the theme tune now! Born 1978.

Hatty65 · 16/04/2026 17:21

Yes, but born in 1965

Graceyfields · 16/04/2026 17:21

The marvellous mechanical mouse organ

Iloveeverycat · 16/04/2026 17:21

My DD born 95 loved watching it and the clangers.

AlpacaTheBags · 16/04/2026 17:21

Yes. I was born in 1984 and I didn’t watch Bagpuss but I still know what he looks like.

shivermetimbers77 · 16/04/2026 17:22

Born 1977 and Bagpuss is an icon, as well as his mice friends who sang “We will fix it, we will fix it”, and that funny owl guy, can’t remember his name..

FlatErica · 16/04/2026 17:22

Born in 1967: I will never forget Bagpuss.

Glittertwins · 16/04/2026 17:22

I have a yawning Bagpuss toy which one DC has appropriated and a Bagpuss pint mug so both teen DCs know who he is.

FatLarrysBanned · 16/04/2026 17:24

Yes, me 1975 knows, also my sister is 1977 and knows who Emily's saggy old cloth cat is.

FlatErica · 16/04/2026 17:24

My heart!

Would you recognise Bagpuss?
persisted · 16/04/2026 17:24

79 baby. Loved it.

fussychica · 16/04/2026 17:25

Yes definitely despite being born in 1956 and never watching the programme.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 16/04/2026 17:25

Of course!

FullOfFresias · 16/04/2026 17:26

1976 here - loved Bagpuss!

Ohfudgeoff · 16/04/2026 17:26

Absolutely! And I'm 7y younger than your BF...

HowardTJMoon · 16/04/2026 17:27

I'm around the same age as you and I'd recognise Bagpuss in an instant. I loved that saggy old cloth cat.

When I was very young, though, we only had a black and white TV so I assumed he was orange and white - after all, who has ever seen a pink and white cat? By the time we got a colour TV they'd either stopped showing the programme and/or I had aged out of the audience. I think I was in my 20s when I happened to see Bagpuss in colour and the cognitive dissonance was striking.

tinyspiny · 16/04/2026 17:28

Born in mid 60s I know who he is , my daughter born late 90s knows who he is .

Waitingfordoggo · 16/04/2026 17:28

I was born 77 and Bagpuss is a very fond memory. (Along with The Flumps, Cockleshell Bay, etc)

KillTheTurkey · 16/04/2026 17:28

Early 80s child, watched Bagpuss all the time! DCs have a Bagpuss plushie and can quote from most of the episodes. Your DH is very unusual, maybe he didn’t watch tele when he was little??

begonefoulclutter · 16/04/2026 17:29

I managed to get hold of a old videotape of Bagpuss and indoctrinated DD with it. That and Roobarb & Custard.😂

Mischance · 16/04/2026 17:30

Bagpuss is a joy. It is a million miles from the frenetic over-stimulating children's programmes that are being made now. Back then they knew about developing brains and the need to treat them with respect and make programmes that are human scale.
Thank goodness Jackanory is still around.

Pandorea · 16/04/2026 17:31

I think it’s very weird he doesn’t know. I’m born 1970 and would. My sister born 1977 does. I remember watching it with her so it was on then. My late teen children also know as I felt it was part of my parenting duties to show them. Did your DH have a tv when little?
