He is threatening the Iranian desalination plants again. CNN. I am rubbish at making these bingo cards.

"While he said Iran’s military infrastructure had been essentially “wiped out” over more than 40 days of war with the United States, President Donald Trump said some potential targets for US military action remain, including the country’s water desalination plants, its power grid and bridges.
“We’ve wiped out their whole country, essentially,” the president said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo.”
“The only to thing left really is their water, which would be very devastating to hit,” he added.
The president also said the country still has “some more missile manufacturing plants,” before adding: “We know every one of them.”
“We still have other things,” he said."

Quote

Iran sells the vast majority of its oil—roughly 80% to 90%—to China, which serves as its primary, crucial buyer, particularly through independent "teapot" refineries that often use a "shadow fleet" to circumvent US sanctions. Other smaller, notable, or historically recorded, buyers of Iranian oil include Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and occasionally India.

Sorry, are you saying that you want China angry?

It already has us looking to EU over US via Stamer, which is something we all thought would take decades post Brexit.

Even Frosty the no-man quietly noted that the EU looked better than the US right now.

My understanding is a lot of the infrastructure is sort of in place.

The reason it hasn't been done before is because the ME can be like cats in a sack. However, when a rather dozy lion rears it's head, they suddenly find out they can work together. It's called political alignment for economic gains. They might call it something like the "Middle East Economic Community" or MEEC to begin with

Sort of like OPEC but with the added codicil of big hugs all round to get the oil out or something.

I can't imagine it will be a huge push to unite the ME against Israel and US these days. The rest of the world is already there, so they'd not be accused of being fundamentalists, rather late to the party if anything.

This is pretty par for the course for a lame duck POTUS. Difference being that prior POTUSes have been at least a bit judicious as to whom they give pardons. Although some in the past have questionable.

Now that he's quietly tossed his baited line into the murky waters, Scrotus is going to use the time between now and Jan 2029 to see how many will do him favours in return for pardons.

But at least it sounds like he is anticipating a time when he'll no longer be in office. (Fingers crossed)

I was genuinely asking if the poster, who seems pro-US, was actively hoping China would get angry enough to be involved to protect it's economy. I was wondering if this was something MAGA is happy with and whether they know about the range of China's missiles

A cynic might say that this is the MEs biggest chance to have a pop at Israel without being accused too much of antisemitism in decades. Them and the entire world against Israel and US ? If they had planned it, it probably could not have turned out better ......

logicisall · 12/04/2026 16:02

There are two strategies at play. The first is PR/propaganda playing to a US audience, midterms etc and most importantly keeping Magats on side. Trump needs a win.

The second is Trump trying to find an off ramp. Control of the SoH is Iran's ace, but it also needs to sell its oil to finance war/economy, so taking the SoH will hurt Iran financially at a time when its assets are also frozen. Which might force them to the negotiated peace table etc.

Re countries paying a toll. Apparently this has been done in the currency which must not be named. Totally untraceable. If I were Iran, I would secretly contract with interested parties to not launch a drone or two while their tankers were passing through, while letting the US think they're successfully policing it.

How the US intends to actually do the blockade is a 'watch this space' answer.

Imagine the propaganda for the PRC is they send their navy to escort tankers to Asia. And India too.

"Asian navies defend our oil from Trump".

What a way for the PRC and India to build alliances in their backyards.

Pro-US? Don't be ridiculous. I'd happily stick some dynamite up the orange arsehole.

I'm just pointing out if they block the Strait it would be harmful to Iran exports.

MushMonster · 12/04/2026 16:23

Just read that Trump is going to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
So, the US is going to stop vessels going in and out and stop those who have paid a toll to Iran and.... well I do not know. Will they raise the pirate flag for this?
How is obstructing the passingvof vessels even more going to sort this issue?

There are some pipelines around the Strait, indeed. For some producers. They can get less oil out of those than directly by port. And at least a pipe had been damaged on the fire exchange. I think now repaired. Pipelines are really vulnerable to bombing. So... they are only a relative solution.

I cannot really understand Trump.... He has put US international position in quite a pickle already. He is on seriously stormy waters with NATO, for starters. If this drags for long, with the US blockading the Strait, pirate style, the little faith remaining will vanish. US could, taking this to the extreme, lose its bases in the whole of Europe, lose access to Greenland sea and air space plus their base there, same for whatever agreement they have with Canada and lose their bases in the Middle East. Trump has already been refused access to South Asia ports for this campaign.
So... if he pushes relationships to the final breaking point, which he seems prepared to do, how is the US going to sustain any military power over anywhere in the World?
Trump's approval is sinking in US, but I think internationally is at a critical breaking point. Yet he keeps pushing.
I can still see him launching an attack on Greenland or putting his nose far too deep into Europe's elections.
And Lebanon is getting the Gaza treatment. He cannot contain Natanyahu, he has lost any power he had over him, if he ever had any.
I think the only way he can get out of this is by calling it a victory and shipping back home. Before the financial pressures around the globe force US out for good.

I don't think it's obvious at all. He is a demented egomaniac to whom no-one in the West except Spain and Pope Leo XIV seems to be able to say no.

And China. They replied like for like with the Tariffs and got Trump to back down. That was when they said they would fight Trump in any arena he wanted to pick.

BruceAndNosh · 12/04/2026 16:25

DancingFerret · 12/04/2026 16:06

He's so obviously demented it's hard to see why impeachment would fail.

If Trump turned up to an impeachment hearing waving the nuclear football, dressed in drag and demanded to be called Tallulah, the GOP would still vote against impeachment

BruceAndNosh · 12/04/2026 16:27

Trump has always been obsessed with creating his legacy.
His legacy will be an almighty shitshow

TokyoSushi · 12/04/2026 16:27

And so another week of turmoil begins. Sigh.

SerendipityJane · 12/04/2026 16:29

I cannot really understand Trump.... He has put US international position in quite a pickle already.

If you add a line to your simulation to the effect that Trump doesn't give 2 shots about the US whilst his self interest is infinite,. and re-run your calculations, it will all work out correctly.

Wipeywipey · 12/04/2026 16:30

If China were to retaliate to this, considering they use the strait and this directly affects them and more to the point neighbouring countries who they want on side (Japan, South Korea are going to be hugely affected etc) does anyone think the world would rally to America? I am doubtful, and personally feel they have it coming. Not sure if I am in the minority to be honest but if they won't get rid of him China is best placed to make it clearer.

UnluckyWalnut · 12/04/2026 16:31

Why hasn't a Grassy Knoll incident happened?

Why would the world "rally" to the US ? Especially if China suggested strong and stable.

E2A; Given how much shit the UK buys from China, compared to the US, I would say we have paid for their protection many times over.

Well, exactly.
I think there would be a fair amount of interesting shoes in NATO

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/04/2026 16:34

I don’t think they would. Although I am on the fence about the U.K. Trump started this unholy mess. It’s up to him to get out of it. If he wants to poke the big Chinese bear with a big stick, that’s on him too. Why would anyone else want to get themselves caught up in that?

Because despite the paranoia of some, there really aren't that many nutters out there. And you would need a nutter. Any vaguely organised attempt would be shit down.

Also, maybe God is saving him for a spectacular end. Worth remembering that it wasn't even 40 years ago a dictator was put up against a wall and shot. And then put up against a wall and shot again for the cameras.
