H-Hour (to borrow a phrase) is 5pm my time so at least I won't have to stay up late or wake up early to find out what's happened. Lordy, if that isn't finding a dubious silver lining in a black and thunderous cloud, I don't know what is.

I've booked a lunch catchup with a friend's daughter, for Friday. Because life goes on and there's nothing I can do for my contacts caught up in the war in Iran. I continue to pray for them and hope the entire WH regime pays for the suffering they have brought to the world.

I saw a post from a magat on sm saying that the US has oil so they don't need the SoH to be opened - the implication being that the US is insisting on its opening for altruistic reasons. I have to remind myself that not all Americans are this stupid.

Do we actually think whatever Trump has planned will happen bang on the deadline? It seems odd to stay up late to watch the news, surely whatever is going to happen won't be at exactly 1.01am (UK time)? I'd rather sleep through the apocalypse anyway.

I'm on team TACO on this one. You've got to hand it to Trump, he's actually pretty good at spinning losses into looking like wins for his supporters. We can all see through it but they eat it up. He'll say something like "Iran begged me not to, they begged on their knees and I'm such a great guy I extended the deadline". Rinse and repeat for a few more weeks while the rest of the grown ups work on a peace deal behind his back.

I suspect that at 7.59, he'll announce a ceasefire - the greatest ceasefire in history.

Just catching up on the last thread, first observation is that if Trump goes nuclear then he can't get his hands on all that oil, so his greed may prevent this.

Secondly, I understand (from the Ukraine threads) that thermo nuclear weapons are illegal to use on civilians, so this would be a war crime in international law?

Thirdly, thank you to whoever posted the video about Chinas take on this. They appear to understand that America and Israel are alone in this, and would quite like to be able to continue to trade in peace, preferably in yen instead of dollars (unless I misunderstood). This is reassuring.

It's also reassuring that the lego videos from Iran are also appearing to understand that nato is staying out. Starmer needs to ensure that this message continues and that UK is seen as independent, anything else is failing to protect UK citizens.

And to think the rule used to be no foreign visits during elections in case the electorate thought it was favoritism.

I remember in Obamas time, there was a GE in Israel and the repubs invited Netanyahu to talk to congress. I think he was lobbying against the JCPOA. Anyway, Obama refused to meet him, because of that diplomatic convention. No meetings at election time.

Agree with all you say, but I'm wondering if he goes nuclear and can't get his hands on all that oil, but neither can anyone else, would that somehow feed into his twisted "Dunroe Doctrine" in some way? Make the world more reliant on American /Venezuelan oil?

A part of me wonders if he (or the people pulling the strings behind him?) is intentionally breaking the world, rather than the destruction of the world being a by product of terrible politics and massive ego?

@RedTagAlan Had a look. One of them, with the initials KP, is a proper lunatic. Used to post all over the property forums under another name with this crazy keyboard situation where the typeface did super weird things mid-post. I found that out when they replied to me on a thread and edited it, and when I looked at the pre-edit version it was a mishmash of insane fonts, sizes and typefaces. I'm thinking political thought might not be their strong suit

Well, we all know he's one who demands instant gratification, so who knows? I'm sure that 'whoever is supposed to do whatever' are on high alert and ready to scramble.

A quick google shows that a squadron of fighter jets on high alert can scramble in as little as 5 minutes. A squadron of bombers in as little as 5-10 minutes. How long it would take them to reach their target I have no idea. Guess that would depend on where they're taking off from and what flight path they use. At any rate, I'm sure he'll expect to see planes in the air right away.

Unless he does a TACO and announces a 'powerful' and/or 'beautiful' fake cease fire.
