It’s not just oil from Iran though is it? It’s any tanker with oil from any of the surrounding companies that normally goes through SoH and has made an agreement with Iran to be able to travel safely. I can’t imagine Kuwait are going to be wild about it.

There were some French boats that got through. Is there a precedent for one NATO country sinking a tanker from another NATO country in an act of war?

Were it to happen and the perpetrator caught, I would want them to be dealt with under the law like anybody else. If that means a murder trial and conviction then so be it. You don't get to make your own laws.

That said, for the squeamish, remember that the putative victim in the scenario actively incited a riot which cost lives and had it succeeded would have seen a lot of heads on spikes. So maybe reserve your pity.

Hear hear.

Whilst I wouldn't abet anyone who might be of the mindset to do such a thing, I certainly wouldn't shed any tears for the putative victim.

Like the song says "I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you!".

Because those crazy gun toting nut jobs are by and large Trump supporters.

Who, to be fair, are losing their fanbois.

Given the trajectory of recent events, if "an incident" were to occur, it's a 90% chance it's a disillusioned MAGA than a vigilante democrat.

Presidential assassins have a short life expectancy though.

I am mildly amused at the idea of Trumps assassin being killed by a eunuch. I suppose the modern day version would be a transgender ranger ?

FWIW the one product that cannot be diverted around the strait
is Qatar's gas
which is essential for cooking in much of south east Asia
Indonesia and Thailand and Sri Lanka are really feeling the pain

I would stop short of capital punishment though. That's a red line.

UK and France could send the Channel Tunnel TBMs

Woah. Oil pipelines are small about 1 metre or so for a project like this.
Looks like the infrastructure might already be there in Saudi Arabia, so it might just be a case of linking up.

"Trump says Strait of Hormuz blockade will be effective "pretty soon"
The U.S. blockade on the Strait of Hormuz will become effective "pretty soon," with help from NATO, President Trump said on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo."
Mr. Trump said the U.S. plans for a "complete blockade" that does not include exceptions for allies.
Speaking about negotiations in Islamabad, the president told Fox News that the first round of talks amounted to a "good meeting." But, he said, Iran would not give up their nuclear ambition, which is "the most important point" for him."

Say what ?

with help from NATO,

Could be lining up a story of how it's all NATOs fault - the US needs to get out of NATO.

Never let a crisis got to waste.

Can’t he just declare victory a few more times and be done with it?

I was going to book flights home for June. It’s not looking hopeful is it? Will we still have jet fuel by then?

be lucky to have loo rolls and baked beans by then...

Story I've heard on this is that whilst pipelines exist in the region they cannot carry anything like the volume needed to replace bulk shipment through the Straits..

There are special gas pipelines too. eg Under the North Sea from Norway to UK, and Russia's Nord Stream which supplies gas to Western Europe

but diplomatic relations between Qatar and its neighbours have long been fraught

Yes, Qatar is a bit ostracised by the Saudis, but war makes strange bedfellows.

Don't let perfection be the enemy of progress.

This is where strategic thinking comes in to play.

Just because there is no immediate replacement for all of the SoH, doesn't mean you cant' start building one for a few years time. This is how rich countries got rich. They created an environment (it's that phrase strong and stable again ..) which allowed them to build the infrastructure to create wealth.

If Nigeria or Venezuela were able to think about 20, 30 year plans, they could supply nearly all of the worlds oil.

China tends to think in terms of 30, 40 years.

I might be totally wrong here, from hazy memory.

The pipeline to take Canadian tar sand oil from Canada to the US gulf. The one that went through tribal lands and big protests. Obama era. Trump supported that. But, that pipe was built because big oil had built heavy crude refineries to process VZ oil in the US gulf. But Chavez stopped that oil. And Canadian oil is similar to VZ oil. So pipe it down.

Then Trump took the VZ oil. Went to sell it to big oil. And they said no thanks, we spent billions on pipelines already. We don't need it. It's cheaper for us to pipe Canadian stuff. We invested.

Is that about right ?

And Trump has VZ oil he can't sell... boom..Iran.

Oh I wouldn't disagree but we need oil PDQ. By all means start building but they're not the answer to this crisis.

Also as we've seen in the Ukraine/Russia conflict pipelines (including Nord Stream mentioned upthread) are vulnerable to attack by a determined enemy.

Yes. Isn’t the reason the Saudi one is now back up and running because it stopped running when Iran hit it a few weeks ago.

No source seems to be particularly stable right now and nobody seems to be in the mood for de-escalation. Perhaps the best we can hope for is a TACO when the markets open.

I refer you to my thoughts about strategic thinking.
