I think Trump has ruined the lives of so many who oppose him with endless law suits, going after their families, destroying businesses (esp lawyers who were on the other side) that people are afraid to stand up to him because the consequences for them if they lose is so high.

It's not like a parliamentary democracy where you can change leaders pretty easily, getting rid of a President is very very difficult and time consuming. They system worked fine as long as the President respected it, once you have someone like Trump the weaknesses show. I also think there is a good percentage of the American population who agree with him, and a good percentage that don't care about anything but the price of filling up their car.

Words are not war crimes and the American constitution had considerable safeguards in it, so they even if a megalomaniac president orders the genocide of a civilian population, the armed forces won’t do it. He knows that. He isn’t omnipotent. He isn’t even willing to put troops on the ground. Expect more strategic bombing while he grapples with the mess he has started. Then in about 3 weeks he will unilaterally declare victory and withdraw. He needs congress to vote in favour of continuing this war beyond 60 days and he’s unlikely to get it because he hasn’t articulated what victory looks like.
