Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

The petro stations being described as having shortages on here are Asda, Morrison, Sainsburys, Tescos and of course Costco. I’d guess that BP, shell, esso forecourts have no such shortages. The reason is price.

The former are cheaper generally than the latter. Shortages might not be people ‘topping up’ but a reflection of how more drivers are actively seeking out the cheapest price per litre now that costs have skyrocketed.

ImWearingPantaloons · 01/04/2026 19:36

there hasn’t been any diesel or premium unleaded near me for the past week.

In any of your petrol stations?

I’m West Midlands and haven’t seen any problems other than fainting at 196/litre…but admittedly haven’t filled up for a few days.

I have wondered at what price point will people start to stop driving. And why have businesses not started telling employees it’s okay to wfh for those that can?

Isekaied · 01/04/2026 19:39

Northwest.

Not noticed any queues and the petrol stations have fuel

DoYouWantACuppa · 01/04/2026 19:40

Local to Edi too. I read there was no fuel at Straiton Sainsburys or Asda. Huge queues for Costco (like properly blocking traffic) on Sunday. Penicuik Tesco are out, and same in Galashiels… the more expensive places, like Shell, BP etc do seem to still have fuel, but it is worrying. It cost me £75 to fill my normal-sized family car last weekend 😭

Interesting so it seems Edinburgh and surrounding is having problems with lack of petrol.

I'm in Edinburgh and haven't seen queues anywhere. I bit the bullet and filled up the car on Monday with no issues.

I don't know if any garages are out of stock as I haven't really been paying attention, though I have been looking at prices as I drive past.

Probably people stocking up for their travelling over the Easter weekend. It will be fine, providing people stop being idiots.

This is what I thought. Doesn't it always happen around bank holiday weekends, Christmas and New Year?

JulietteHasAGun · 01/04/2026 19:43

and lots of people doing that is why the petrol stations are running out. It’s Covid loo rolls all over again.

MyElatedRobin · 01/04/2026 19:44

No idea- am also smug EV driver!

Onemanwenttomo · 01/04/2026 19:45

As handy as local FB groups are they are detrimental in times like this.

Same goes for the fuel finder thing that the gov't have unveiled with great fanfare. It just causes hype.

tetleyhead · 01/04/2026 19:45

Our town has been having intermittent supply issues since the weekend. Social media reported issues today and some have run out plus large queues. South Lanarkshire.

As a result of this post I thought I'd pop out and fill up and something extraordinary happened. The nozzle locked and the trigger would not release, I ran into the shop screaming as I had visions of an explosion. The forecourt manager rushed out and turned the emergency stop lever and said 'sorry about that' and I was in tears. The meter was showing £87 and I said I only wanted £15. To cut a long story short I didn't have to pay anything but all the people in the queue had to leave and drove right pass me as if to blame me

Is this a joke?

Same here. No diesel, think unleaded is better. There are apparently diesel deliveries but it goes quick. Tesco petrol station seems to open for about two hours after a delivery and then shut again as it sells out so quick as it’s significantly cheaper than the Shell or Gulf or Esso. (17p a litre cheaper)

Lobesloope · 01/04/2026 19:51

Absolutely fine in leeds, not seen a queue, always been able to fill up.

Lovelynames123 · 01/04/2026 19:52

I fill up weekly anyway, I noticed Tesco had lots of diesel pumps OOO but I haven't come across a problem with unleaded, I usually use premium unleaded anyway.

Queues at Costco are ridiculous though, and a friend said it cost her £65 instead of £45 to fill up with diesel

Worst case scenario, I could walk/bus to work but I don't think it'll come to that

Thehorticulturalhussie · 01/04/2026 19:52

SW England, no problem so far

user2848502016 · 01/04/2026 19:53

North Wales and no queues or shortages here, prices have shot up though and lots of people I’ve talked to are limiting driving if possible

Walkthelakes · 01/04/2026 19:55

Just tried to fill up on the way home and all three garages near me; independent, Tesco and Asda were completely out of all fuels. Apparently they are due a delivery at Midnight tonight so I'm hoping they'll be some in the morning. In in York and supposed to be visiting my mum in Sheffield tomorrow.

I only wish it was, a horrible evening and I've given myself a migraine (I suffer from them)

I cant stop.driving I don't get a choice.

If I want to get my kids to school or get to work.

I cant work from home.
And unless after the holidays they decide to shut the school I will need car to get kids to school.

3luckystars · 01/04/2026 19:59

People can’t store it so it will settle down in a week. There is no shortage, people have caused this.

Fancyfencepost · 01/04/2026 19:59

Central Scotland today, no problem at all, empty station, 146 for petrol.

Stepsisterfromhell · 01/04/2026 20:01

Most of the pumps at my local Tesco petrol station were out of order/empty. Queues for the remaining pumps. Liverpool.

2chocolateoranges · 01/04/2026 20:01

We live in a small town outside of Glasgow. No queues here and plenty petrol. I filled up today as I was running low.

no panic no drama, just filled up because my tank was running low and I needed more for this weekend.

Dontknowwhattocall13893 · 01/04/2026 20:01

In laws mentioned it was like that a few places in Stirlingshire too
