Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

Why does topping up cause shortages? I don’t really understand. They’re not suddenly using a whole load more fuel than normal? They’re not stockpiling it. How does it work?

Because let’s say you normally use 1 litre of fuel a day, and fill up with 30 litres once a month, on the 15th. You’re normally buying 30 litres and then another 30 litres in another 30 days. If you decide on the 16th that the price is going up/ there might be shortages or whatever and “top up” with 1 litre, now you’ve bought 31 litres this month, 32 litres if you do the same tomorrow and so on. If loads of people do the same, there is a huge spike in unanticipated demand and we get shortages

I went this morning and no issues, £1.49 at morrisons.

@Nojudginghere our local Costco had queues prior to the present situation.

Ours too! Fortunately they always move quite quickly. But they’ve been over double the normal length every time I’ve driven past in the last few weeks.

East Midlands. Traffic as heavy as ever if not increased. No queues at any of the petrol stations I passed. However the next town over has apparently been experiencing the idiots who top up the minimum (£8?) spend everyday causing shortages and massive queues.

If this town begins with S then yes it’s been ridiculous! All the garages have been sold out by midday/late afternoon and the queues have been massive every day for nearly a week now.

Shallwesay2pm · 01/04/2026 19:17

South Somerset here, just been to fill up at Morrisons and out of 12 pumps only 4 had fuel. Queues werent too bad though, people were in and out quite quickly .

DrySherry · 01/04/2026 19:19

Same situation here, no petrol yesterday afternoon at Sainsbury's. Today they have 3 pumps out of 12 with petrol but no diesel

shelbybears · 01/04/2026 19:19

I live about a 5min walk from a petrol station no issues here. I’m in Lanarkshire. Drove past 2 different ones yesterday and no queues or limits etc.
I’ll just be filling up when the petrol light is on as usual.

TheMerryGreyMaker · 01/04/2026 19:21

Cornwall, no issues. Except for price obviously.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/04/2026 19:21

@bookishmum1 yes it does!! Right next to a town beginning with B…..

YellingAway · 01/04/2026 19:22

I assume that the roads will be quieter in the central belt due to it nearly being school holidays and people taking their kids away early. Trains were quieter.

Parker231 · 01/04/2026 19:23

The UK gets its unleaded fuel from domestic refineries and imports from Norway and the US. There are no shortages - just panic buying.
A proportion of the diesel comes from Saudi so supplies are likely to run out shortly together with jet fuel.

Ilovewheelychairs · 01/04/2026 19:24

Big issues in Hull, most fuel stations sold out locally. I need my car for work and am on my fuel light so will have to try and do a mad dash somewhere soon!

bridgetreilly · 01/04/2026 19:25

There are no shortages and no need to panic buy. The only reason anything runs out is people panic buying. Just stop.

Allmarbleslost · 01/04/2026 19:26

I filled up at a petrol station on a busy main road this morning at about 10am and was the only person there . I haven't noticed any queues or quieter roads.

3luckystars · 01/04/2026 19:26

It will all calm down in a week or two, the panickers can only fill up the tanks so many times. Give it time. It will settle down.

Local flights have been cancelled in anticipation of this. It’s potentially going to hit Cornwall hard this season as tourism will decline.

No issues here at all - Ribble Valley/East Lancs and I have passed 3 petrol stations on the way to drop my child off at school every day this week. Husband has just filled up somewhere different, apart from saying don't panic when you look at the bank account he didn't remark on any queues.

However, having lived through the refinery blockades at the turn of the century then that was busy, you could waste a big chunk of your evening queueing! That was exacerbated by panic buying so clearly some of us haven't learned from that.

I clearly remember that, I’d picked up a hire car in the morning which was running on empty, gone to work, left work in the evening and every petrol station had horrendous queues 😬 and yes, because people were panic buying

hahabahbag · 01/04/2026 19:31

No issues here at all. People are talking themselves into problems, simply fill up as normal

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/04/2026 19:32

SW

Been past loads of petrol stations today and none were busy. But we did see 191.9 at one place.

MyOliveStork · 01/04/2026 19:32

It’s toilet paper all over again isn’t it.
sigh….

youbizarrehorse · 01/04/2026 19:33

Business as usual here near Belfast. Tesco ran out of unleaded last week because their price hadn’t gone up as much as others, but all back to normal now that their price is the same as everyone else’s. No queues. Traffic a little bit quieter overall because of the Easter break as no school traffic and also a lot of parents are off work.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 01/04/2026 19:34

We are a bit closer to Edinburgh than you, and while our local Tesco had no unleaded this morning, at the next closest petrol station there was no problem. I think it's maybe just down to Easter holiday daytrips in the sunshine earlier this week - no danger of that for the rest of the week, looking at the forecast, so hopefully things will settle down soon.

EllaPaella · 01/04/2026 19:34

NE and absolutely no difference to usual here.. not seen a single queue at a fuel station.

CoffeeIsMyLove · 01/04/2026 19:36

I'm in the West Midlands and just tried 7 garages to find some diesel, none of them had any 🤦🏼‍♂️
