Why is nobody posting happy birthday on my Facebook? 😔

Definitely a first world problem and name change for obvious reasons.

It's my birthday and I usually wake up to numerous messages on my timeline and they pop up during the day too.

All my settings are as they should be but nobody is posting, and it's not showing anywhere (even Facebook isn't wishing me happy birthday). Spoke to my mum and she confirmed no birthday prompts although she can see my birth date on my profile as usual.

DP is at work, kids are gaming for a bit while I have a chilled morning, and we are going out later so it's not that it's a shit birthday or anything.

But I'm missing my FB messages! 😭

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm assuming it's a technical glitch.

Ready for all the comments telling me what a sad sack I am (I know this already, trust me! 😁)

Happy birthday! 🎂

Pancakewaffle · 30/03/2026 09:35

Just seen your username, happy 30th!! For context I am 5 years older than you. I post more on the older generation's Facebook for birthdays than I do my own or younger.

30birthdaygirl · 30/03/2026 09:38

Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. It's plugging the sm gap for sure 🙏🙏😘😘

Reassuring to know that something is going on with FB and it's not something I have done or can change!

A bit older than 30 unfortunately that's just the date @Starlight1979 but I can dream eh 😄

Yes this happened to me this year, only got a few as the first person intentionally came to my wall as knew it was my birthday, and then their post appeared in feed so a few others saw it. But I don’t see birthday prompts anymore anywhere

Echobelly · 30/03/2026 09:41

I don't post on FB anymore and I think it's the same for a lot of people

FernandoSor · 30/03/2026 09:41

Because Meta made a business decision that Facebook would no longer be about keeping touch with (actual) friends, and would instead be more focused on groups, advertising, and 'engagement content' (i.e. rage bait).

Consequently, they have deprioritised posts from individuals, particularly individuals with private locked down profiles - people may wish you happy birthday but you'll never know because Facebook will never show you.

This is why people don't use Facebook anymore for its original purpose (keeping in touch with real-life friends) and only use it (if they use it at all) for special interest groups and marketplace.

The tech companies realised that they could not make money out of people who only use their products for private communication with real life friends - so they shut off the abilitiy to do so. Only 'content' that is out in the open and public for all the world to engage with is prioritised.

It was great for the first ten years - I have old university and school friends scattered all over the world and it was lovely to have wide ranging meandering conversations with people I rarely see and to get a peek into dear friends' lives. Facebook killed that because they couldn't monetise it.

firstofallimadelight · 30/03/2026 09:42

Yeah I use to get loads now I only get a few. I wonder if it’s the algorithm or if people have muted me??

Iocanepowder · 30/03/2026 09:43

Another more recent thing i have noticed is just constant notifications about stuff i don’t care about, ever time i open the app.

‘This person posted a photo’

’These strangers posted in a group’

’As you interacted with xyz you might interested in abc’

So it makes me want to look at notifications less, including any birthday ones.

WoahThreeAces · 30/03/2026 09:43

Happy birthday!
I don't know anyone who uses Facebook anymore! I still have an account simply for a couple of local groups I'm part of.

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 30/03/2026 09:44

Fb is for ‘old people’ according to my DC. I’m not sure who used it anymore as it’s just adverts. I don’t understand the algorithms, as I’m getting posts from two weeks ago on mine.

Happy birthday though!

Moonlightfrog · 30/03/2026 09:44

Happy birthday.

Facebook isn’t what it used to be. I don’t bother wishing people ‘happy birthday’ anymore, I really can’t be bothered unless it’s a very close friend or relative. I find it annoying when people who don’t speak to me all year then wish me a happy birthday. People just don’t bother anymore.

I was referenced in the recent Freaky Friday sequel as a ‘database for old people’ lol

WaltzingWaters · 30/03/2026 09:47

My fb stopped prompting me on people’s birthdays years ago. I hadn’t knowingly changed anything and even tried (once, years ago) to set it up again but it made no difference. So I don’t post for anyone’s birthdays either.
I still like FB as I travelled lots in my 20’s and I like seeing the odd life update from old travel friends, but it is mostly random rubbish on there these days, so I don’t use it much.

Happy Birthday OP!

Dollymylove · 30/03/2026 09:48

Aah first world problems....

piano55 · 30/03/2026 09:48

The other day Facebook was promoting me to wish people happy birthday the day BEFORE their birthday. So I was texting people happy birthday and they were replying “errr it’s tomorrow”. So odd.

piano55 · 30/03/2026 09:48

*prompting

CautiousLurker2 · 30/03/2026 09:53

Am glad it is dying out, frankly. Birthday wishes from people I’ve not seen in 10 years since my children changed schools, seem bizarre. My actual friends will all message me direct.

Myneighbourisanosyoldgit · 30/03/2026 10:01

I'm one of the few in the world who has never been on FB or any of the social media posting sites and I'm a lottery virgin😁

HisNotHes · 30/03/2026 10:03

People aren’t bothering with fb anymore, that’ll be one reason.

BlackCat14 · 30/03/2026 10:04

I just checked and I got a notification from Facebook 9 minutes ago about a friends birthday… so that will have been about 9.50am, maybe it usually gets done around this time?

It will be a combination of things like that and less people using Facebook now. Also I personally don’t go on Facebook/ social media until I get home from work in the evening (I’m on mat leave now so it’s a different story!) so I’d imagine it’s the same for a lot of your friends and you’ll get messages later.
That said it does seem to be a dying thing. I’m 36 now and 15 or so years ago when I was at uni and in my early 20s etc, the birthday messages on Facebook were huge, and reading them all was a nice little birthday event. Now I get about five!

PoshLady90 · 30/03/2026 10:04

Facebook is dead. Also it makes me cringe on instagram the sycophantic happy birthday story posts,
Its all fake, if someone cares they will message or call, not post on social.media in an act of performative friendship

2Rebecca · 30/03/2026 10:05

I don't look at my Facebook feed now and facebook is nearly all adverts. I just go directly to the groups I'm in. The adverts and the loss of the "see most recent post" function means I don't use it for friends and family any more and don't tend to see birthday stuff. I don't have my birthdate on Facebook, there are too many identity scammers out there.

Happyjoe · 30/03/2026 10:05

Just a quirk of something going wrong today probably. And that people don't tend to use facebook anymore? I dumped it some years ago when it stopped being the very thing it was supposed to be.

Happy birthday, have a MN message instead, much better! Grins. Hope have a smashing day.

Sunshinemoonlightboogie · 30/03/2026 10:15

Hardly got any as well and usually get quite a few. I put it down to fact Facebook is awful! I liked a pic of MY OWN child in their school sports team a few weeks ago and am now being inundated with kids all over the country proudly being posed for their schools in that particular sport. No wonder people are absolutely done with it!

Happy Happy Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day!

LoveHearts69 · 30/03/2026 10:16

Do you wish other people a happy birthday through fb? I don’t really use it anymore and so can’t expect many messages on it when I don’t reciprocate them myself 🤣
