I never thought this could happen to me

I have developed a taste for Smith’s Scampi Fries. The pub snack of yesteryear. Haven’t had them for about twenty years until this week, now I’ve had three packets in two days.

Just opened a packet and they looked more ‘dusty’ than usual, lots of the flavour dust all over the inside of the packet. A nice bonus.

Then I take one from the packet and lift it to my lips…only it’s not a rectangular fake scampi and lemon flavoured snack. It was a nugget of purest flavouring! Whole block of scampi and lemon dust! I wasn’t sure whether to eat it or auction it on eBay but curiosity got the better of me and I ate it. I’m not sure my mouth will ever recover, having been stripped of all tastebuds.

You read about such things but never expect them to happen in real life. Next I will get a solid chocolate kitkat.

I once had a KitKat with the wafer running the wrong way - across it, not down it. It was really interesting.

For weeks I've been asked what I want for my birthday.

I have woken up today, aged 53, and finally KNOW THE ANSWER. I am going to get up now, make a fresh loaf of bread, go to b&m and buy scampi fries/bacon rashers and put the whole fucking lot in two sandwiches for lunch 😁

Better by two bags I suppose. They won't last the 4 hours bread takes!

Bundleflower · 30/03/2026 08:18

I once got a bottle of champagne that had not one, not two, not three, not even four… but FIVE layers of foil on top. The foil just kept coming. DP said ‘ooo that’s unusual we should have kept that’ ehhhh how could I have known until I’d opened it!?

Are they the things that are kind of ridged? With orangey/red stripes?

That’s the bacon fries. The scampi fries are the same brand though. In those sort of slightly neon looking yellow/green small packets.

The bacon ones really are the business!

EasterDecoration · 30/03/2026 08:24

I'm not keen on the bacon ones, they are a bit too greasy, Frazzles all the way for me.

shellyleppard · 30/03/2026 08:30

@Ipsevenenabibas there is still time 🫂❤️🎊🥳

shellyleppard · 30/03/2026 08:31

My mum once found a piece of brillo pad in a coffee and walnut cake.

<misses point of thread> 😁

When I was 8 I found a first class stamp in a jam tart. I thought I’d get compensation in the form of many, many jam tarts but I just got a voucher and a letter I got to read out in assembly. I was the school stamp in a jam tart celebrity for a week!

x2boys · 30/03/2026 08:42

My only complaint about scampi fries are the bags are far too small 😪
Otherwise they are lovely
I once had a kit kat with raisins in it.

DontStopMe · 30/03/2026 08:46

I had some M&S Outrageously Chocolatey Biscuits and the last one was so outrageously chocolatey that there was no biscuit in it.

x2boys · 30/03/2026 08:47

I also quite recently bought a box of eggs frim my local shop and five out of six of them had a double yolk.

Cuppachuchu · 30/03/2026 08:47

Funniest thread this year!
(Once had a 2 finger Kit Kat, all chocolate, about 1988, a good year).

tnorfotkcab · 30/03/2026 08:47

I've had a KitKat with vertical wafers....!

I had this with the scampi Fries, mine was a pregnancy craving ,honestly i couldnt resist them despite knowing they were processed filth and i worried id harmed my child! Fortunately she was fine and i survived too.

TroysMammy · 30/03/2026 08:54

My sister's ex husband called Scampi Fries clitty chews.

plinkityplink · 30/03/2026 08:56

Havinv watched all episodes of inside the factory I do wonder how some of these get through. I mean they all claim to have machines that can spot a dodgy whatever but I still get crisps that are green etc. I bought some florentines from Aldi a couple of years ago and inside one of them was A BOLT.
bearing in mind these machines supposedly have magnets in what happened there goodness knows!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/03/2026 09:03

Not quite a snack item, but once I found 2 small tomatoes fused together. Looked like a tiny bright red bum.

TheBewleySisters · 30/03/2026 09:21

When I was a little girl, many, many decades ago; I bought a Lucky Bag (not sure if they even still exist, or what they would be called in different parts of the country, but basically a small bag of mixed confectionery and sometimes a small toy), and inside was a half-crown coin. Two shillings and sixpence! Wealth beyond the dreams of avarice for an eight-year-old back in the day.

Is that why they divorced?

😂

Reminds me of one time years ago when my then primary aged daughter was having her breakfast before school. I gave her the glass of squash I'd made her, she took a drink, paused, and very politely said "....that tastes a bit stronger than normal mammy?"

Half asleep me had given her a glass full of undiluted squash. Not a drop of water in sight.

Poor kid

My little brother once had the misfortune of drinking the bottle of squash which I had left in the fridge after visiting a festival. Was mostly just vodka and v.little orange squash. He had a bit of a shock 😅.

Anyone know where I can get Tiger Nuts, please ?

WonderingAndOverthinking · 29/03/2026 23:27

You can keep your Scampi Fries - Cheese Moments are the real top tier snack! 😍 I used to buy whole cards of these from a dodgy social club 🙈

My school friend’s parents owned a corner shop and once she brought me a packet of Prawn Cocktail Hula Hoops which was just a whole packet of the flavouring - no crisps at all - because she knew I loved prawn cocktail stuff! It took me three days to eat it all - divine!

Oh I lovvvved Cheese Moments @WonderingAndOverthinking They don’t exist any more, do they?

I was recounting the glory of my block of dust moment to DD on the walk to school this morning and my salivary glands started twitching just at the thought.

Some beauties on this thread. I’d love a solid Gold bar. That would be like being touched by an angel. But I’m still thinking of the whole potato in a packet of crisps. That’ll stay with me.

Four solid Kitkats @Villanousvillans! Make sure you buy a lottery ticket this week!

Good lord, I think this actually wins the thread. Of all the things to find in a jam tart. Amazing. First class, no less!
