I never thought this could happen to me

I have developed a taste for Smith’s Scampi Fries. The pub snack of yesteryear. Haven’t had them for about twenty years until this week, now I’ve had three packets in two days.

Just opened a packet and they looked more ‘dusty’ than usual, lots of the flavour dust all over the inside of the packet. A nice bonus.

Then I take one from the packet and lift it to my lips…only it’s not a rectangular fake scampi and lemon flavoured snack. It was a nugget of purest flavouring! Whole block of scampi and lemon dust! I wasn’t sure whether to eat it or auction it on eBay but curiosity got the better of me and I ate it. I’m not sure my mouth will ever recover, having been stripped of all tastebuds.

You read about such things but never expect them to happen in real life. Next I will get a solid chocolate kitkat.

I had a pure cheese dust wotsit once. I decided to try it, I was a child and thought that the extra flavouring could only be a good thing right? Wrong it was bloody disgusting. I couldn't eat them for a few years after that.

This is a beautifully written post OP, about what I'm sure was a glorious moment. Thank you for sharing. I once got a double quarter pounder at McDonald's when I only had ordered a single. That was a good day

I once got a drive through for my sons, asked for mcchicken with nothing on, as little one didn't like the lettuce and mayo, drove home unpacked to find they had literally given me the empty bun!😵‍💫

AutumnAllTheWay · 30/03/2026 01:13

I am literally going out tomw to hunt these down. Your description *salivates Too many memories (worries about how to sleep)

I'm in Oz, and it's impossible to find chocolate covered brazil nuts, so I ordered some to come from the UK (hopefully in time for Easter) for DH. However, I also ordered some Snyder's of Hanover Honey Mustard & Onion Pretzel Pieces, which I last had in the UK 14 years ago (although they are American, I think). Seeing them on the screen felt like finding gold. Can't bloody wait.

Solid chocolate kit kats are a extremely rare event... I've had two in 56 years!! 😁

I once had a five finger solid chocolate kitkat (from our college vending machine) back in 1984 and still think about it!

It’s true, you never forget your first one

DinoLil · 30/03/2026 03:27

Hahaha this has made me laugh! I had a solid block of white chocolate last year in a packet of Foxes biscuits. Out of civic duty, I notified them.

They sent me a £5 voucher off more Foxes biscuits!

YAY!!

Reallyneedsaholiday · 30/03/2026 03:53

Are you pregnant? 🤣

Once I had a bar of dairy milk fruit and nut that had the fruit but no nuts
It was delicious

You used to be able to buy these - Cadburys dairy milk fruit. I much preferred them to fruit and nut but they stopped making them sadly.

babyproblems · 30/03/2026 04:50

What are these scampi things? Crisps or some sort of cooked thing? I’ve never heard of them. Off to google now

ForeverTheOptomist · 30/03/2026 05:11

Are they the things that are kind of ridged? With orangey/red stripes?

FIFIBEBE · 30/03/2026 05:49

I frequently refer to the solid lump of Wotsit flavouring I found in my packet of Wotsits circa 1980. I can never understand why my audience are not as impressed as I was. I see from previous posters here that I have found my people.

Oh I bloody love a packet of Scampi Fries and don't get me started on Bacon Fries! Washed down with a Pepsi Max - I'm a happy gal. I am literally salivating right now!

Ha! I buy my husband the Bacon Fries from a seller on eBay - you can get 24 bags from around £14. They even come on the card that you used to see behind the bar in pubs in the 1980s! I don't particularly like them myself but I do get a little retro kick every time I see them, being the weird person that I am!

And how much will a solid chocolate Kit Kat cost?
I bought a 4 bar Kit Kat for £1.19 the other day. Bloody rip off!

DP loves those Scampi Fries. Also scampi and lemon Niknaks, which seem hard to find. He would be very jealous!

I’ve had a couple of solid Jacob’s Clubs and a solid Breakaway once. Oh and a United with only the chocolate and honeycomb.

Scampi and Lemon NikNaks - yum I remember those. Do they still do them? I doubt they taste the same as they did years ago.

shellyleppard · 30/03/2026 07:05

@BlakeCarrington i wonder how long it would have lasted for tho??? Would it be like the eternal McDonald's that never goes mouldy?? 😬

Alright showoff 🙄 I've had zero in 40 years...😪

NooNakedJacuzziness · 30/03/2026 07:09

People mentioning Uniteds has unlocked a memory - what was meant to be in them apart from honeycomb, was it biscuit? And more importantly can you still get them??

EasterDecoration · 30/03/2026 07:13

It was a happy day when I discovered you can buy the pub-style card with 24 bags of scampi fries hanging on it from Amazon.

I once had a pack of Party Ring biscuits with no holes just solid biscuit.

Pricelessadvice · 30/03/2026 07:16

I love the little lump of pickled onion dust you sometimes get in a bag of monster munch.

You should buy a lottery ticket!

Nerdynerdynerd · 30/03/2026 07:39

And to think i get excited when I get a really large crisp in a packet... that's amazing 👏

There's something exciting about food gone "wrong" in a good way. When the machines mess up and kitkats are received as solid chocolate 🍫

VisitingInkMonitor · 30/03/2026 07:41

I’m showing my kids this thread - I have once had a solid Club and a solid Kit Kat and they think I have made this up. I am very jealous of the pp who had a solid wagon wheel though.

BellaPommefritio · 30/03/2026 07:53

In the late 70s/early 80s, it wasn't unheard of to shake your morning Shreddies into the bowl and to see a doubler, a fourer or even a sixer- this would both blow our minds and create good luck for the rest of the day😂
