I never thought this could happen to me

I have developed a taste for Smith’s Scampi Fries. The pub snack of yesteryear. Haven’t had them for about twenty years until this week, now I’ve had three packets in two days.

Just opened a packet and they looked more ‘dusty’ than usual, lots of the flavour dust all over the inside of the packet. A nice bonus.

Then I take one from the packet and lift it to my lips…only it’s not a rectangular fake scampi and lemon flavoured snack. It was a nugget of purest flavouring! Whole block of scampi and lemon dust! I wasn’t sure whether to eat it or auction it on eBay but curiosity got the better of me and I ate it. I’m not sure my mouth will ever recover, having been stripped of all tastebuds.

You read about such things but never expect them to happen in real life. Next I will get a solid chocolate kitkat.

Once I had a bar of dairy milk fruit and nut that had the fruit but no nuts
It was delicious

HangryBrickShark · 29/03/2026 22:47

I like it when you get very brown McCoys flame grilled steak crisp. A Tesco Express on the way to work bought a batch of these, so I was buying 2 packets a day!

Lovely :)

Rabbithill · 29/03/2026 22:47

Very jealous of your flavour dust experience. I love a packet of Scampi Fries at the pub. I don't trust my self restraint enough to buy a multipack from a shop though!

This made me laugh a lot 😂😂

I SWEAR I had several solid chocolate KitKats from the school canteen in the 90s, but do sometimes wonder whether it's a false memory... Oh, the 90s.

Fgfgfg · 29/03/2026 22:53

I've had one solid chocolate finger of a KitKat with wafer in the others.
Best ever - packet of jelly tots which were all green except for two red ones.
Most disappointing - packet of salt n shake crisps that had five sachets of salt and hardly any crisps.

flapjack5 · 29/03/2026 22:53

Absolutely glorious. I love to suck a scampi fry in my mouth until all of the flavour has gone and the fry itself has gone a bit soggy. There is no greater pleasure than a cold glass of white wine and a pack of scampi fries in a beer garden.
Had a few solid Kit Kats in my time too.

WetBandits · 29/03/2026 22:56

I just remembered the time I ate a packet of salt and vinegar Discos and each crisp had a thick layer of dust. I felt like I was having some sort of religious experience as I couldn’t breathe, my eyes were watering and my mouth felt like it was going to explode. Took all the skin off my tongue and inside my cheeks and lips were peeling for days!

Still the best packet of crisps I’ve ever eaten in my life.

On the topic of unusual confectionery rare finds - I once opened a pack of polos with the hole left in

2 years later I opened a bag of Walkers Ready Salted and there was a small cooked whole potato inside (peeled)

Polos normally have the hole left in, numpty. If the hole had been taken out then that would be something to gloat about.

WinterCarlisle · 29/03/2026 23:07

I’ve just had a box of a dozen Tesco large free range eggs where 7 were double yolkers. Does that count? My small DS had his mind blown.

About a billion years ago when I was around 7, I nicked a multipack of club bars from the kitchen on Christmas Eve. A couple were solid chocolate but of course I couldn’t tell anyone or I’d have been in a WORLD of bother so I just ate them quietly under my polly pocket duvet. Christmas miracle.

LabLover54 · 29/03/2026 23:07

I have had a solid Kit Kat but also a solid gold bar, that was special

As a child, on the rare occasion that my father had to mind us on a Saturday, rather than head to the golf course with the other 80s dads, he would drive us to a pub to play pool with my older brothers, and park me in a corner with a packet of scampi fries and a lemonade & lime. It was utter bliss. I query whether we put too much focus nowadays on spending quality time with our offspring rather than loading them up with a sugary beverage and peak pub snack to create some core childhood memories.

I had a double cone Cornetto a couple of weeks ago, it looked smaller than the others in the box and was wrapped as normal but once that wrapper was off there was another wrapped (smaller) cone inside it and hardly any ice cream, there was also no chocolate and nut topping on it. I reported it to Ocado as damaged and got a refund for the box of 6. The other 5 were fine.

You should have photographed it and the box and complained to Walls (it is made by them isn’t it?). They would probably have sent you about £10 or more in vouchers. You usually get a better refund complaining to the manufacturers rather than the store.

Solid chocolate kit kats are a extremely rare event... I've had two in 56 years!! 😁

I used to love them (40 years ago) until I realised what scampi was 🤮.

Sandysandytoes · 29/03/2026 23:16

Scampi fries - delish! I was with someone years ago and when she opened her twix it had 3 fingers it, awesome days.

ohreallyIsee · 29/03/2026 23:21

Once got a box of 10 large eggs from tesco, everyone had a double yolk.

Me too!!!!!! Pure chocolate Kit Kat but only 1 in 59 years 👍🏻

Don't you think it is very controlling of MNHQ to not allow us the laughing emoji?
I think we should LTB.
This whole thread is very funny.

I’ve had one about fifty years ago. Sadly, I’ve been trying to reach such heights of ecstasy ever since.

AInightingale · 29/03/2026 23:26

A mouthful of unadulterated crisp flavouring is a rare but exquisite pleasure, I agree. It's the same reason I resist buying that 'Biscoff' spread they now sell in supermarkets beside the Nutella. I know I'd eat the entire jar with a teaspoon in the space of about three days without it coming anywhere near a slice of toast.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 29/03/2026 23:27

You can keep your Scampi Fries - Cheese Moments are the real top tier snack! 😍 I used to buy whole cards of these from a dodgy social club 🙈

My school friend’s parents owned a corner shop and once she brought me a packet of Prawn Cocktail Hula Hoops which was just a whole packet of the flavouring - no crisps at all - because she knew I loved prawn cocktail stuff! It took me three days to eat it all - divine!

My mum once found a piece of brillo pad in a coffee and walnut cake.

<misses point of thread> 😁

I once found a piece of what I assume was cow skin, complete with hairs, in a tin of corned beef.

Oh past memories , when multiple little salt twists in your crisp packet were a source of delight and conversation for a week. We knew how to make our own entertainment in those days ( and our own salt and vinegar crisps with proper vinegar).

Bolonese · 29/03/2026 23:33

I love the idea of a shadowy underground market for prawn cocktail hula hoop flavouring. I would pay a kings ransom for a packet, if your friend happens to still have any contacts in the biz.

I agree, there is something about the feel on the back of your legs of the stone steps outside a pub as you sit in the sun and enjoy your rare treat . It’s possibly also tied in with the sensual addition of the beer laden air every time someone went in or out. Our local pub also sold little boxes of chocolate covered raisins, I can taste them now.

I had four solid Kitkats in a pack, last week. It’s put me right off buying any more Kitkats.
