We had a holiday to Mexico booked.
It cost £3,900
Every month i have been transferring him £300 for 6 months for my half.
He has told me today its been cancelled as he only paid the £500 deposit
He said he was borrowing in to the money and was going to pay it back but before he knew it he had to find the £3,400 and could only pay £2,000 off it so Tui have cancelled it.

Im so angry
He’s told me he will just book it last minute in June and we can still okay.
He said from next month he’s putting away £1,000
Im so mad

I know this phrase is touted a lot but this is a massive red flag. He is showing dishonesty, coniving, bad with money, sneaky and a theif. I would not trust him now. Also, what is he doing with the money? Does he have a gambling issue? Little bit of advice, if you plan on breaking up, dont let him know until you have all your money back. Don't act hostile until then either. He will use it as an excuse not to see you and never repay. Of course, if he wont repay or even try, then act hostile immediately.

So go on sleeping with him? I don’t think so. Personally, in that situation I’d rather lose my money.

She doesnt have to sleep with him... but be distant but doesn't give away the game that she plans to break up if she wants her money back. Personally, I think she has lost the money and would leave now, but if he is planning on booking a last minute thing then he must have some money to give her back.

She’s not getting a penny back. She’s posted before that he’s got a gambling addiction and yet she still handed her money over to him knowing his form for spunking all his wages to Paddy Power.

Zennia · 26/03/2026 08:21

If my partner ever did anything remotely like this, for me it would be the end of the relationship.

He is a thief and sees you as a gullible sucker.

Amazed that people can afford to spend £4k on a holiday...

Personally I think people are overreacting. It's not great - I agree, but these things do happen. The money is not gone and the holiday can still be booked..

Just my personal view but I think he might have saved you some internal organs as well as money. I cannot understand why people see the lure of spending so much to visit Mexico in all honesty - especially if you're not Hispanic or don't speak and act as such, you're just going to stand out.

Seriously? 😂

For several months! It's absolute insanity. He'd only have to relapse once for the whole lot to be gone. This was 100% foreseeable. OP really needs to read up on gambling addiction (if this is even real) and then decide if it's worth it to stay with him.

But OP is just as bad here. Why would you plan a £4k holiday with someone wi h a gambling addiction? Surely there was any genuine care or thought you'd plan something far more reasonable and insist on joint cooperation.

I think this is just sheer idleness, naivety, stupidity or a combination of them on the part of OP. It's nothing to do with being in a controlling relationship - you just plan to your means and planning a £4k holiday that the majority of people would be unable to afford with someone with a known issue with money is borderline insanity.

What does "borrowing in to the money" mean?

So he could only find £200 in addition to the £1800 you'd paid him? That's pathetic.

What has he spent the money on drugs a gambling habit? Big red flag I wouldn’t be travelling with this person at all

I thought as much... he probably has the other "holiday" in the pipeline to have an excuse to take some more money... I really dont understand being addicted to something that most of the time results in a loss... e.g. negative emotion. In the tiny hope you might just win that time.

Shoxfordian · 26/03/2026 10:20

He's a gambling addict. Why did you ever agree to give him the money? You can't trust him

gamerchick · 26/03/2026 10:32

I don't think the OP is coming back.

TidyOchreDeer · 26/03/2026 12:18

I'd be absolutely furious and this would absolutely be the end of the relationship for me. What on earth has he been doing with your money? I'd never be able to trust him again.

No she won’t. But she’ll be starting another thread in a few months, when this twat does something else appalling , asking for advice and ignoring it all.

Bifster · 26/03/2026 12:57

It's a serious betrayal of trust as significant as infidelity. I have lived with someone who was not trustworthy. It ended i tears....mine.

Gambling addiction?
Hes not paying it back, hes just leading you uo the garden path.

CrocusesFlowering · 27/03/2026 17:48

@LouiseK93
Yes. The op posted weeks ago that he is a gambling addict - £800 daily habit at times

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 28/03/2026 10:26

So he stole your money. Demand it back immediately and honestly - I would finish with him over this! If you don’t get it back small claims court!
