Would you rather be in a room full of people all talking about how brilliant you are, or in an empty room by yourself?

I would choose the empty room every time.

Apparently it's a 'test' to see how introverted or extroverted someone is.

The reason I'm posting is because I am struggling to believe anyone would choose the room full of people. Am I wrong and blinkered?

Definitely an empty room by myself I'd hate to be in a room where I am the centre of attention. I can't think of anything worse

Full room. I love being looked at, and I never get tired of extravagant compliments. I'd be bored rigid in a large group of people within 10 minutes if I wasn't the centre of attention though.

I really hope you're joking 😂

No, of course not.

A room full of brilliant people talking about how brilliant I am? Who wouldn't want this???

ME

Sounds like HELL!!

I have ADHD - wondering how many of my fellow nay sayers are ND 🤔

See, my cat has nothing but criticism for me. Just this morning, for instance, I didn't get up at 4am to give her some breakfast. And she's really hungry because she's actually never been fed. Not even once in all the time she's lived here. She is but skin and bone, hanging on to life by a thread.

🤣

pinkpony88 · 21/03/2026 22:32

I actually love compliments. But I’m not that keen on people. So I’d choose the empty room every time. DH would choose the full room, whether they were complimenting him or not!

sanityisamyth · 21/03/2026 20:21

Definitely the empty room. I’m not good at taking compliments due to very low self esteem.

I dunno I have very low self esteem at the moment and I don’t think feel being alone is a bright idea 😏

Melarus · 21/03/2026 22:39

Full room! Love a good ego stroke

Full room. Interestingly I don't come out as either introvert or extrovert in tests. I'm smack in the middle. Ambivert I think it's called.

I’m the same in the tests but I’d rather have the empty room

ThisOchreHedgehog · 21/03/2026 22:41

Empty room! There’s nothing brilliant about me!!

Nearly everybody has said they want the empty room. I don't think they can all be ND.

I have ADHD and would prefer the first one.

Autism tends to be associated with introversion, but ADHD can go either way, in fact there is a slight increase in extroversion seen in those with a high score on hyperactivity in ADHD according to research, though it's not as strong as the links to two other of the "big five" personality traits (conscientiousness and neuroticism).

I do not score highly on hyperactivity, just inattention, but in the general population extroverts are more common - I think it's something like 2:1. So I don't think my extroversion is anything to do with my ADHD.

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2026 22:48

Empty room; I'm an introvert who hates being the centre of attention.

However, I'd like it if someone in the crowded room filled me in on what nice things they were saying about me. A bit of an ego boost is always nice.

No, but they could all be introverts. Introversion tends to be overrepresented on discussion forums on MN compared to the general population. Extroverts tend to prefer talking to people IRL (I also do but I love discussion forums for being able to access so many different perspectives compared to IRL).

I reckon out of my DC DS2 would choose the empty room like a shot and DS3 would choose the full room like a shot.

Can't be sure which room DS1 would prefer. He is 17 though and is giving me whiplash with this discovering himself by trying out multiple opposing identities phase.

My DD1 would love, love, love the full room. Being the centre of attention is her dream.

I don't know about DD2. I think it would come down to which room had the best furniture for climbing.

Yes, all this makes sense.

Similarly I’m struggling to understand why anyone wouldn’t want to hear a load of people saying how brilliant they are. I wouldn’t say I’m a classic extrovert either, I get sick of socialising after a while and like being alone. But I have a lot of admirable qualities and it gives me great pleasure when other people recognise them and tell me so.

I can’t think of much i would find more hideous tbh.

Im an actions not words person and the idea of being centre of attention is my worst nightmare.

Im very social but like a mix of busy life and my own peace. Bet people telling me how wonderful I am - I’d be cringing after about the 3rd compliment

Being an introvert doesn’t mean you don’t like socialising and talking to people in real life. Introverts just need solitude to recharge afterwards.

There’s such a thing as a socially extroverted introvert - that’s where I see myself fitting.

And no I’m not ND in any way. I’ve got a very people oriented job so my WFH days inbetween are priceless

MrsClattenburg · 21/03/2026 23:00

I can't understand why anyone wouldn't chose the first option?!

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 21/03/2026 23:01

An empty room. I’m often in rooms that are empty and on my own… so it’s not something to be afraid of. Happens every single day. Too many people talking about me however would make me feel awkward. What are you meant to say to compliments that don’t make you seem arrogant?

BeFairOliveBear · 21/03/2026 23:02

I'd prefer to be in the room alone but if people would like to write down their comments I would be very happy to read them. When I have processed them I would then like to talk them over with a select few loved ones.

Bc it’s embarrassing? All those people complimenting you - what do you say? Why are they all doing it? It’s weird and cringe.

Oooh see this sounds like a nice time. Especially if I can have tea and cake while reading them.

OnAWednesdayInACafe · 21/03/2026 23:03

with zero hesitation I am heading straight into the empty room, and then locking the door behind me so it stays empty!
