Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good Lyrics | Genius Lyrics https://share.google/fXhmd5KSrhfJUNtnp

I just heard it and looked up the lyrics. Appalling.

Totally agree Op.

Zov · 02/03/2026 13:28

What am I missing? What's wrong with it? And why are you expecting a 50 year old song that is rarely played anywhere to be banned?

HelloDenise · 02/03/2026 13:34

It's essentially saying I'll put up with violent abuse as long as I've got a man no matter how much of a twat he is. Susan would never LTB.

I take it you've never read the lyrics and if you have and you think there's nothing wrong with it then I despair. Note too that my post says should have been. At the time.

It was also covered in 1995 and on Britain's Got Talent. It's far worse than Relax that was banned 10 years later.

50 years ago, attitudes were very different - thank heavens they are a lot better now - so it is unsurprising that songs like this were not banned back then.

@HelloDenise - you are not wrong to be horrified by the theme of this song, but you might be a bit unreasonable to expect the attitudes and actions of 2026 in a time that was half a century ago.

carry on teacher GIF

You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh....

Get in the middle of a chain reaction
You get a medal when you're lost in action
I want to get your love all ready for the sweet sensation
Instant radiation
You let me hold you for the first explosion
We get a picture of our love in motion
My arms will cover, my lips will smother you
With no more left to say

Errr, I think you need to read the lyrics again. She's talking about what he's doing to her heart and her mind and her pride.

Also, the song is 50 years old, and I can't remember the last time I heard it played or performed.

.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 02/03/2026 13:56

But why should it be banned though? Lots of media depicts stuff that isn't good behaviour, that doesn't mean we should ban it. There'd be very little left on TV if we banned all the serial killer dramas for a start!

Zov · 02/03/2026 14:01

EXACTLY @VimesandhisCardboardBoots ! Well said.

No, not it's not saying that at all, it's saying she enjoys the situation:

"I don't want you to ever quit"
"Cause this hurting feeling is, ooh, so good to me"

It's a stupid song, for sure, but from another time.

I'm confused by the mention of "Relax" and "Chain Reaction" on here; they're not about abuse and not remotely comparable.

FruAashild · 02/03/2026 14:17

It's far worse than Relax that was banned 10 years later.

Relax was only banned by the BBC for a short while and that ban was driven by homophobia. It was only 17 years after the partial decriminalisation of gay sex and four years before Section 28.

I think you’re misunderstanding the song. It’s not about being violent it’s about the intense love and the hardship that comes with a relationship and working through it.

NormasArse · 02/03/2026 14:22

Don’t listen to My Sharona.

Echobelly · 02/03/2026 14:22

Well you'd have to ban a lot of older songs about 'My man is a piece of abusive shit but I love him and would never leave him' - it was a pretty common theme. I've never heard this song myself and as others said, it's hardly part of popular culture, so there's not really anything to ban.

It wouldn't be on to put out a song like that today, but I think we can listen to those older songs of our own accord and put it in context that 'Yeah, that's not a very emotionally healthy attitude'

LBFseBrom · 02/03/2026 14:22

I like the song, the rhythm, etc, it's great for dancing. I never listened to the lyrics properly though. I wasn't familiar with it but came across it at the start of the first episode of 'Mr Loverman' on BBC1 (iplayer), and there are people dancing to it in a club, having a good time. I loved the series and associate the song with that.

Its just a song. A fifty year old one.
I cant remember last time I heard it played.
Most pop/,rock songs are about sex, drugs , rock 'n' roll and and fighting. If you're going to ban one, ban em all!!

DISGUSTING!! where is Mary Whitehouse when we need her 🤣🤣🤣

Absolute banger of a tune though and guaranteed to fill a dance floor 🥰

Peacexbliss · 02/03/2026 14:55

If its not songs and music, its sex in films and programmes that offended MN today.

You can only get offended if you allowed ourself to be offended by it.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 02/03/2026 14:57

You can't just ban everything you don't personally agree with. And besides, this is nowhere near the top of the list for 'offensive' songs now. If anything, it's very tame.

Eightdayz · 02/03/2026 15:24

Female songwriters have been sending bad messages for years. Its not new.

From the 70s / 80s

Respectfully, I say to thee, I'm aware that you're cheating, but no one makes me feel like you do.

Somersetbaker · 02/03/2026 15:58

How about "He hit me (it felt like a kiss), by the Crystals, written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King about Little Millie's reaction to being beaten up by her boyfriend. Now that is a song about abuse.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 02/03/2026 16:08

I’ll throw in Young Girl from the late 60s

Also summertime by Mungo Jerry - there’s an ice cream van round here with that tune and it annoys me 🤣 DH makes himself scarce if we hear it as he knows there will be a rant incoming

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/03/2026 16:10

Let’s ban all songs which offend us.

TheBewleySisters · 02/03/2026 16:12

"With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That 'come on' look is in your eyes
Woah, oh, oh
Young girl
Get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl"

'Young Girl' by Gary Picket and Union Gap. No 1 in 1968 and in the charts again in 1974.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/03/2026 16:16

Art reflects the times and while things change and we may no longer agree - censoring, silencing, banning teaches us nothing and is not the actions of an enlightened society
