I'm no fan of Donald Trump, but..

I'm no fan of Trump but imagine if Biden or Harris had won the 2024 election:

Maduro would still be destroying Venezuela

The Ayatollah would still be killing his own people in Iran

Iran would still have nuclear weapons

There would probably still be Israeli hostages in Gaza

India and Pakistan could be at war

As could Armenia and Azerbaijan; Rwanda and DRC; Egypt and Ethiopia; and Cambodia and Thailand

Russia would be in a much stronger position in Ukraine

Other NATO countries would be spending less on defence.

He's not very good domestically but that's an incredible record on foreign affairs. Let's face it: The world would be on fire if Biden or Harris had won. Trump is seen as a strong man around the world and, outside of the west, that's probably respected.

Ostensibly Iran refuses to give up creating enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and is building 100 ballistic missiles a month that could carry them.

Also Ostensibly the school was adjacent to an IRGC facility (y'know, the people that massacre protesters and arrest and torture women).

So my question to you is, would you be happy if, in 2 years time, a regime like that which sponsors various terror groups and hates the West and Israel, had over 2000 nuclear missiles (the UK has about 250 i think)?

I think the situation is shitty but which would be a worse outcome?

Edited

Iran has been 'weeks away from nuclear weapons' for 30 years. It's the 'weapons of mass destruction' lie all over again.

It's not being 'dismissive'. It's great that people have a moment of happiness. We've seen this show before though. We've seen Iraqis celebrating, Afghans celebrating, the West being lauded as heroes over throwing terrible regimes and we've seen what happens after the celebrations. Memories are really fucking short around here.

That’s very generous of you to allow a ‘moment of happiness’.

Can you say more on Iranians being held to the same outcomes as Afghanistan and Iraq? They are not the same people.

But, but, but... He said in June that American airstrikes had 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear programme. Hmmm. It's almost like they're not particularly coherent or truthful in DC.

Analysis: Trump said Iran’s nuclear program was ‘obliterated.’ So why is he looking to strike again? | CNN Politics

In March, the US intelligence community assessed that Iran was “not building a nuclear weapon.”

Interesting that you've decided I'm left leaning.

I don't have an answer. I'm not a politician or a diplomat.

But I would suggest having continued the negotiations that would appear to have at least had a chance of success; having marshalled international cooperation and support from allies before going in (including plans to evacuate and/or repatriate foreign visitors and residents who are now caught up in a very alarming situation). And, jointly with allies, having spent some real time on a plan for what to do post-bombing. You can't effect regime change in the ME by killing people and hoping the vacuum will be filled by people you like better.

I think we are actually in agreement. Lol. I thought you were not left leaning and saying that lefties disagree with DJT.

Children are not collateral damage.

If they weren't targeted they were, by definition, collateral damage.

Do you have a dictionary?

What I mean by my comment is that children should not be collateral damage.

No. They don't sound the same at all. I lived in NYC on 9/11. I can assure you, it's a totally different thing, and even now, thinking about the sound makes me anxious (and I'm not a generally anxious person).

OK that's a fair explanation. It's just to me (without much interest in airplanes in general ) that one jet aircraft sounds pretty much like the next one. Unless of course they are flying at a lower level, in which case they are obviously louder.

Iran's nukes have been on the same timescale as a tram network in Leeds. It's always "soon".

In an ideal world there shouldn't be any collateral damage but in reality in a war there always is.

Around 600,000 German civilians died in total from Allied bombing raids in WW2. Of which researcher Jorg Friedrich estimated that at least 76,000 German children died.

No it hasn't.

But the question is asked was predicated with an IF.

Would you be happy if such a state did manage to achieve nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles to deliver them. What would be an acceptable sacrifice to stop that happening? 1 child? 10? Or is there no situation bad enough?

Personally I wouldn't trust them to build one, transport it to somewhere like London in a van and tell some weak-minded idealogue suicide bomber they get more than the usual number of virgins for blowing up the evil city.

Right, so without any actual knowledge, you're sneering at upset posters on another thread.

If you're concerned about the plight of people or, specifically women, in Iran, which I assume you are considering your comments on Islamo-leftists being against Trump, why are you not sympathetic to the plight of people caught up in the midst of this with no warning?

Why? I get the emotional response, and support the principal, but is there no situation where the death of a child is a necessary evil?

How many children would die if Iran had a nuclear bomb? Or do you think they share your morals about hurting innocents?

maudelovesharold · 01/03/2026 13:23

FWIW, I don’t think any country, least of all one with an impulsive toddler in charge, should have nuclear weapons.
As for regime change - good luck with that. Such short memories, and a reluctance to learn from history, that meddling in other countries’ affairs rarely ends well, not least for the inhabitants of those countries. Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, anyone?

That was 80 years ago.

In 2026 we have to develop a way to hit a target accurately, and precisely, that doesn’t endanger innocent life.

There is no amount of dead children that is justified by taking out one bad guy.
