Surely this can only be a good thing if that tyrant is no more. However hopefully it won't lead to months/years of fighting and bloodshed

TheMorgenmuffel · 28/02/2026 20:25

Thats exactly what it will lead to.

Crinkle77 · 28/02/2026 20:27

Yep happened in Iraq. Got rid of one tyrant and created a vacuum which allowed ISIS to grow. I can't see it being all peace and love in Iran after this.

Damnloginpopup · 28/02/2026 20:28

Vacancy. Vacuum. Disorder. Reckoning.

...Syria.and Libya too

BrownJenkins · 28/02/2026 20:31

It's now been confirmed.

Vinvertebrate · 28/02/2026 20:33

If it means the end of the Islamic Republic then it can only be a good thing for Iranians, especially women. DH (Persian) is balls-deep in a bottle of celebratory single malt with his Iranian diaspora mates on Telegram. (The death was being reported on Iranian news a few hours ago).

Is it? I’ve still only seen from the Israeli media. I honestly pray for the people of Iran and hope they get the better future that they so desperately deserve.

lljkk · 28/02/2026 20:44

@Vinvertebrate ... so does your DH honestly think the regime will now fall and a better more democratic almost-here future beckons?

Coz I predict a near-medium future for Iran that looks like Assad's Syria 2 years ago, severe repression for most everyone. I reckon the current awful Iranian regime is stil supported by a small majority who will stop at nothing, no brutality is not justified to maintain status quo. I very much hope I'm wrong.

mindutopia · 28/02/2026 20:46

I can think of some other tyrants out there we might also be happy to lose. 🙄

onelumporthree · 28/02/2026 20:50

This action is hardly likely to improve the situation and bring about world peace, is it? Iran will just bring another one in to take his place. I despair, I really do.

Vinvertebrate · 28/02/2026 20:53

@lljkk his view is that Khomeini’s ignominious death is very richly deserved, almost irrespective of what happens next. FIL spent years in hiding after the revolution - no travel, no healthcare for a serious heart condition - and his assets and pension were confiscated. He was lucky, because his brother was murdered in prison by the regime. MIL worked like a dog to keep the family fed and DH is in in doubt the appalling stress shortened her life. More recently, SIL was detained for “unIslamic dress” by a mobile IRGC unit.

Nobody who is not a lunatic will mourn those fuckers.

logicisall · 28/02/2026 20:58

Getting rid of a tyrant is only half the deed and what happens next matters. Trump is not a friend of the Iranian people, he is Israel's. Expect a gold plated Trump Towers soon tho.

Hagelslag · 28/02/2026 20:59

A succession crisis is rarely a good thing.

Not quite. PresentTrump made a comment more or less saying he believes it is true. But stressing its a rumour.

How is China reacting to the news ?

Addybee · 28/02/2026 21:10

I for one am celebrating his death!

This all my people have wanted for nearly 50 years.

We Iranians aren’t naive. We fully understand geopolitics perfectly well. We know foreign governments arent saviours, and we don’t need to be schooled on who the so-called “good” or “bad” actors are as so many have tried to do especially over the last couple of months. After 50 nearly years of surveillance, repression, and state violence, we know exactly how power operates.

and for anyone who judges how iranians are feeling right now need to understand that People living under pressure for years don’t respond in neat, morally polished ways. Their emotions are layered, complicated, and earned. Instead of policing how they should feel, recognise that those reactions come from lived experience most outsiders will never truly understand

@Addybeethanks again for your posts and insight. I just saw footage of people celebrating, I hope it’s the case.

CNN was showing footage in Iran and you could hear people cheering.

Sadcafe · 28/02/2026 21:46

He would be no loss , be good to think it would help stabilise the region, but realistically it will just give the extremists more reason to hate the west

I hear you . I can’t imagine the feelings you might harbour from years under such rules, so I am celebrating with you x

A succession crisis is rarely a good thing.

But how much worse than what was already happening? It’s a gamble yes, but doing nothing wasn’t safe either.
