Hard to put nearly 50 yrs of history in a short manner but
Iran and the United States have been in conflict for decades, ever since the Iranian revolution in 1979 when Iran’s government became a religious authoritarian state. Since then there’s been deep distrust on both sides, with disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, its support for armed groups in the region, and America’s alliances with Iran’s rivals like Israel. Tensions have flared many times over the yers, including direct US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in 2025 and proxy fights involving missiles and drones between Iran and Israel last.
In late 2025, Iran went through huge nationwide protests ( one of many over the last 5 decades) because the economy collapsed and prices soared. What began over bread and jobs turned into broader demonstrations against the government. The regime cracked down very violently, killing 50,000 thousand people and shutting down the internet to stop reporting on what was happening.
That internal unrest made the U.S. more publicly critical of Iran’s leadership and essentially started building up military forces in the ME and pushing demands on Iran to not execute people etc. When negotiations and pressure didn’t stop the violence inside Iran or lead to a deal, trump and Israel launched a military offensive in today with the aim of hitting Iranian military and nuclear-linked sites, and targeting top leadership and were successful in killing the leader.
thats the latest gist of it but its much more deeper than that.
