Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

Eastie77Returns · 25/02/2026 08:04

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

No banning socks uncomplicated it, with having to wear tights it doesn’t matter how short these girls are hiking up their skirts they aren’t showing flesh inappropriately at school, of course it would make some people uncomfortable especially young lads who can’t control their erections and get random erections as it is- i have 2 sons one just hitting puberty and one gone through it and i can’t imagine the embarrassment they would feel if they caught a glimpse of some young girls knickers and accidentally got an erection, no the boys wouldn’t have to wear tights in the summer, probably shorts—- which girls can wear too you know.

So girls have to wear tights and be uncomfortable because your boys can’t keep their eyes off girls’ bodies? It’s your boys who are the problem.

The teachers should enforce the skirt length, instead of making more work for girls.

Have you ever walked up a busy staircase of teenage school children? If a girl is wearing a tiny short skirt, their underwear/arse is in front of your face. You can try and look to the left or the right but then you can’t see where you are going. You need to look in the direction you are going so as not to fall up the stairs but that is where someone is flashing their arse cheeks.

it is not always the boys choosing to look at the girls. Please think about things before you go round saying teenage boys are the problem. Sometimes they can be. But sometimes the girls can be too. No one should be exposing their underwear at school- it is not appropriate. It makes other pupils and staff very uncomfortable. They should not be exposed to it.

so if the girls can’t understand this and continue to expose themselves to other children, then I can understand why the school have said tights must be worn with skirts. Personally, I would just get rid of skirts altogether and have trousers for everyone with school shorts/culottes for warmer weather.

Oh but the girls don't like them and they're hot. It's amazing boys cope, maybe they should go in with no trousers on and their arses on show.

Ugh grow up, you can’t tell me you have never been out and about and unintentionally noticed some girl/womans clevage or thong or whatever on show, it doesn’t have to be sexual to notice these things, but what i am saying is boys may notice these things and since they have not much control over when/where their erections occur sometimes it could be embarrassing, why should boys have to suffer that embarrassment because these girls aren’t adhering to school uniform policy? Its not the boys fault they are breaking school uniform policy is it? Therefore it isn’t the boys forcing these girls to wear tights its the girls not wearing the correct uniform that is the problem- stop blaming the boys.

TheignT · 01/03/2026 15:46

Cetim · 01/03/2026 08:01

Exactly.boys should not be wearing trousers hanging off their arse in school or college. But noone talks about that in a sexual way and how it makes girls feel. Uniform policies should apply to all not just one gender. Knee length shorts and skirts that are fastened at the waist and no lower. Banning socks is silly.

I bet the boy with his trousers needing to be pulled up isn't flashing his crotch at anyone.

Eastie77Returns · 28/02/2026 19:50

Well speaking for myself, I wear them because I like them and they work well with certain tops.

Do you think all women wear them because they want to arouse men or other women?

If a married woman goes out on a date night with her husband or wife and wears one, why do think she is wearing it?

You really wear your skirts so short that your knickers are on show? It all makes more sense now.

Pineappleice43 · 01/03/2026 16:02

I wonder if this is the same school I went to, we wore kilt style skirts and one baking hot summer I didn't wear tights and was told off. I remember being so confused! Why should girls be forced to wear uncomfortable unbreathable tights especially in heat when summer comes. Why should girls have to change their behaviour for boys?

I agree some girls roll their skirts up too high and immature in their actions but maybe the rules should be enforced stronger and repeat offenders should have to wear trousers. I hate it when everyone has to change because a small amount of people can't follow a rule!

misscris · 01/03/2026 16:08

When I was at school (back in the mists of time), many of the girls shortened their skirts, but the uniform then included navy blue “knickers”. My 12-year old granddaughter wears shorts under her school skirt (and so do most of her friends) and they are at an all-girls school. No boys looking at their undies, but they are still young enough to be doing cartwheels in the playground. Also I noticed, when picking her up last week, there seems to be a fashion among some of the girls to be wearing black tights, WITH WHITE ANKLE SOCKS as well.

They haven’t had to change their behaviour for boys they have had to change their behaviour because some GIRLS aren’t adhering to school uniform policy, that is not the boys fault, its the few ruining it for the many -an unfortunate part of life.

Where do I mention my knickers on show?

You asked why I think women wear short skirts and I explained why I do on occasion (since I can’t answer for other women). I’ve never flashed my knickers. I see women all the time in short skirts and they are not flashing underwear either

Are you ok?

I didn't ask you that. Not sure what you are imagining.

The thread, your thread, is about girls wearing skirts so short people are uncomfortable seeing their knickers. You then said why you wear them.

So I suppose the question is did you mean short skirts like these girls are wearing or something else.

You were talking about skirts so short that undergarments were visible in your OP @Eastie77Returns.
You said the discomfort that caused others was the reason given for the change in school policy.

The girls know what they're doing, and why they're doing it. Yet boys and male teachers are getting the blame on so many of the posts on this thread.

The girls are also on a power trip. They know that male teachers are going to be reluctant to address them individually about the length of their skirt. And the suggestion from a pp that the male teacher should just find a female teacher to tell them off is farcical. Women teachers aren't just wandering the school with nothing else to do but be called to a classroom to tell a girl to roll down their skirt.

My husband is a secondary school teacher and he used to work at a school in our local city centre and this was a huge problem.

He said that the way the huge majority of the girls wore their skirts was so inappropriate that most of the male teachers felt extremely uncomfortable around them.

Female teachers wouldn’t be expected to have to tolerate male student’s bums and thighs being on display so why should the male teachers have to tolerate the female students doing it?

He also said that the male teachers felt unable to do anything about though because to raise the issue with student would mean that they had been “looking”.

The male teachers can’t win.

I am horrified by what some of the secondary school girls look like these days in their school uniforms but whilst we live in a world where girls bodies are sexualised from such a young age, and where so much importance is placed on how attractive they need to look to men, I can’t see anything changing.

cazcaz2 · 01/03/2026 18:04

Can they not just let the girls wear trousers and do away with the skirts then?? Makes sense.Makes them EQUALS.

We used to get our skirts measured when I was in Secondary school in the late 1990’s.

The highest they could be was 2 inches above the knee. If anyone’s hemline went higher than that the girl would get an automatic detention.

It always used to bemuse me though that they were so fixated on the length of the skirts as the PE skirts were tiny! It was even more baffling as it was during PE that underwear was much more likely to be seen anyway due to the nature of the lesson.

We used to think, “Either girls can have their legs on display or they can’t?!”

If seeing the thighs of girls in their school uniform was deemed to be inappropriate enough to warrant a detention then they should have lengthened the PE skirt (which most of the girls would have probably welcomed).

It all seemed very hypocritical.

Goddessoftheearth · 01/03/2026 19:28

Lets look at this a different way.

Regulation school uniform trousers are nylon. Horrible, sweaty, nylon. But boys HAVE to wear these all year round - more practical in winter, horrible in the summer. Do they get to moan about it? No. My DS did actually have a bit of moan about it in year 7 (at primary school he’d been allowed to wear shorts in the summer). And do you know what we said? ‘Suck it up son - this is life. Unless you are a postie or in a job where you don’t need to dress up, this is it. You will need to wear trousers. End of.’

Nb not casting shade at anyone whose husband, dad, brother, son, grandfather, wife, mother, sister, daughter is a postie/ can wear shorts to work btw!

And re PE kits, girls and boys have separate PE lessons (which I’m sure is also an outrage to some!) and in our local schools, the PE uniform includes cycling shorts underneath. Up to the girls if they wear them or not.

edited to say PE skirts are about freedom of movement during sport. Yes they could all be in shorts, but would that be deemed ok?

Not sure how a load of PPs have missed the critical point that the Deputy Head has said boys will be boys. Irrespective of whether you think the tights thing is right or not surely everyone can agree that is disgraceful? I agree with the OP that the inability/unwillingness of the school to tackle behavioural issues appropriately is the problem here - a blanket ban doesn't make sense. You wouldn't apply that approach in other circumstances would you? Some children are bunking off school, let's have a TA follow every child around every day to make sure they aren't skipping classes. Some children are having fights in the playground, no one is allowed in the playground any more to prevent fighting etc. I think the school should instead be enforcing that the girls responsible for the problem are firstly put in detention etc and if repeat offenders have to wear tights or trousers. 10 girls out of 400 is a tiny amount and the school needs yo do a better job of enforcement.

I agree that saying boys will be boys is appalling. It makes the boys out to be perverts which is disgusting and makes the girls feel that they need to consider boys when they wear their uniform. I would be fuming about that whether my child was a boy or a girl because it’s a disgusting and sexist thing to say.

the uniform is a separate issue and one the school need to address separately. I agree that the repeat offenders should be punished. If the issue continues and more girls begin flouting the rules then it’s fine to change the uniform and say girls must wear tights or even better- trousers/culottes. But make it nothing to do with the boys.

In this particular case in the school it is the girls who are to blame for breaking the rules (unless the boys are wearing ludicrously short shorts too?).

Blame those girls for the fact that your daughter must now wear tights, not the boys please. It is not their fault in this case.

I think the school has made the wrong decision here though. I think they should enforce uniform rules around skirt length instead of making everyone wearing a skirt wear tights.

Surely the boys making inappropriate comments to the girls are breaking the rules too?
