Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

So they can find a way to enforce no socks but not no very short skirts? Strange.

Enforcing uniform rules has always been a problem for schools and a great deal of staff time is wasted on this - and a great deal of pupil/teacher goodwill lost.

Uniforms have always been a focus of teenage rebellion.

I can understand that the school might wish to ensure that their pupils are decently clad in a way that means underwear and genitals are not visible and people can concrete on their work.

It is unrealistic to say that girls should be able to show whatever they want and the males in the school should not respond to this, as in practice boys of this age are heaving with hormone surges and the presence of glimpses of knickers/fannies/boobs is going to distract them. They would not be human if it didn't. Just because it distracts them does not mean they are bad, nor that they are going to behave inappropriately.

Just as you would not expect anyone (male or female) to dress indecently in the workplace/global summit meeting/parliament so the pupils should be required to dress decently in what is their workplace.

Yes it’s just common sense isn’t it? I’m amazed some people don’t get it. I think it’s this phenomenon now that women in the media go around like they are trying to pull trade on the street . There was a photo of Katie Price that popped up this morning. She just looks an absolute embarrassment. The norms of social behaviour have been completely eroded.

So heres the scenario. Girls want to wear skirts halfway up their arse. Literally.
Any male person who gives the tiniest glance, possibly in disbelief, wondering if these girls have actually forgotten to put on a skirt, will be labelled as a pervert.
Is it remotely possible that the parents and school authorities could grow a pair of bollocks and tell the girls to actually dress properly and not as if they are off to some seedy nightclub?

Completely agree with this! For gods sake - no one is saying that a what a woman wears causes assaults or rapes. But we have got to stop this ‘wear what you want’ crap. I don’t want to see your 15 year olds arse cheeks. I don’t want to see anyone’s! It just isn’t nice or decent.
and yes, put a female arse on clear display and men WILL look. It’s bloody biology and to pretend otherwise is unhelpful. Comments are not acceptable but neither is dressing like a hooker in school!

At no point have I said girls should wear what they want.

I’ve repeatedly said the girls at DD’s school should wear the regulation length skirt, as DD has always done.

My only issue is that the school has imposed a blanket ban on every single girl because of the behaviour of a minority of girls (the HT’s said it is a small number). Meanwhile there is no collective punishment handed out to all boys because some boys have been harassing girls. In the words of the Deputy, the harassment occurred because “boys will be boys”. One rule for girls, another for boys. Plus ca change…

Anyway last week all girls were permitted to wear their PE kit to school because of the heat. My thoughts immediately went to the poor boys. I hope they were able to cope and concentrate on their work whilst girls were walking around in shorts. If any of them felt uncomfortable I expect the HT to put all girls straight back into blazers and tights immediately.

I am sure their PE kit shorts are more decent than some of the pussy pelmet skirts that many wear!

Trousers for everyone. Skirts aren’t necessary

Saying everyone must wear trousers is as bad as saying all girls must wear tights in hot weather.

WTF have I just read! This country has gone to pot. I’d be calling a newspaper to report this school for being the shittiest school in the Country. Next they will be saying they want girls to wear modesty clothes. Which is fine if you choose to but it should not be imposed.

I think the school need to ask the girls why they feel the need to roll their skirts up really short.

I live near a school and some of the skirts are so short that they do look indecent.

Same. In the area i live in I can regularly see the bottom
of their bum cheek.

Some of them honestly look like they’re going to an Ann Summers sexy school girl look. Absolutely was not allowed when I was at school. They even switched to pleated skirts as it is extremely hard to roll them up and it looked a lot smarter than long belts as skirts.

If they ever hope to get a job, they need to learn what is acceptable. Showing your bum isn’t!

Because no one ever grows up and they still wear the same thing they did at 13/14/15?
