Girls at DD’s school cannot wear socks because men and boys feel uncomfortable

DD’s school has placed a ban on girls wearing socks due to persistent issues with girls wearing skirts that are too short and not the school’s regulation kilts. According to the e-mail sent to parents, girls wearing socks with said short skirts has resulted in some “members of the school community” feeling uncomfortable. When the issue was raised further by some parents, the (male) Deputy made it clear that it was essentially unfair to male pupils, and presumably teachers, to be made to feel awkward when girls undergarments were visible to them. There have also been issues with boys making suggestive comments to girls in short skirts.

I support the school enforcing school uniform policy but hate the fact that 12 year old DD and her friends are already being policed as to what they can or cannot wear because…men. DD hates the thick black tights she now has to wear. She always wore the correct length skirt and knee high socks.

The situation will apparently be reviewed ahead of the warmer months. I just feel this reinforces the view that girls & women need to ensure they dress in a way that doesn’t attract male attention but boys are not learning that inappropriate comments and behaviour towards a girl because of the way she dresses is completely unacceptable.

Surely the boys making inappropriate comments to the girls are breaking the rules too?

Yes they are.
That should not be allowed either.
The school don’t seem to be doing a very good job here. I do feel sorry for the teachers though as their job is hard enough as it is.

I didn't ask you that. Not sure what you are imagining.

The thread, your thread, is about girls wearing skirts so short people are uncomfortable seeing their knickers. You then said why you wear them.

So I suppose the question is did you mean short skirts like these girls are wearing or something else.

OP has quoted you asking exactly that.

Not sure how a load of PPs have missed the critical point that the Deputy Head has said boys will be boys. Irrespective of whether you think the tights thing is right or not surely everyone can agree that is disgraceful? I agree with the OP that the inability/unwillingness of the school to tackle behavioural issues appropriately is the problem here - a blanket ban doesn't make sense. You wouldn't apply that approach in other circumstances would you? Some children are bunking off school, let's have a TA follow every child around every day to make sure they aren't skipping classes. Some children are having fights in the playground, no one is allowed in the playground any more to prevent fighting etc. I think the school should instead be enforcing that the girls responsible for the problem are firstly put in detention etc and if repeat offenders have to wear tights or trousers. 10 girls out of 400 is a tiny amount and the school needs yo do a better job of enforcement.

Thank you. I do think 10 girls out of 400 breaking the rules is a relatively small amount and those 10 girls could be disciplined rather than enforcing a rule that impacts the other 390 (although school employees on the thread have said 10 is a very high number).

Anyway, the over-riding sentiment on this thread seems to be that the way to resolve the issue is to ban skirts full and have all girls wear trousers.

@TheignT - yes you did ask me that. I’m not imagining anything. Perhaps check your post? You wrote:-

So your headline rgds socks is not the issue..it's short skirts? Misleading, just a tad?

Edited

My issue is that DD is not allowed to wear socks to school so my headline is 100% accurate.

Is it?

I thought it was for the school to make sure skirts were at an appropriate length. Making everyone wear trousers is similar to making everyone wear tights isn’t it?
Trousers or skirts are both options for girls at many schools and that’s fine.

Thatcannotberight · 02/03/2026 08:50

The trouble is that the school can't follow their own sanctions process for the 10? persistent offenders. The optics of suspending 10 students for uniform rule breaches is terrible, especially when schools are forced to keep students in school at all costs. I presume they didn't consider that some girls wouldn't give a shit.

Although whole class/school punishments should be against the rules. Our school are not supposed to give out whole class detentions for a few misbehaving students.

Polkadotteapot · 02/03/2026 09:12

Would detentions rather than suspensions work? Not whole class ones, just for the rule-breaking individuals.

Sadcafe · 02/03/2026 09:24

Of course the girls shouldn’t be told what they can and can’t wear in that way, but look at it from the male perspective, especially the teachers, glance at the girls and you’re instantly a pervert, it’s an impossible scenario for both groups

Polkadotteapot · 02/03/2026 09:30

I think it’s fine to say it’s not okay to wear clothes that reveal your underwear in a business or educational or any formal setting. For anyone of either sex.
I can’t see why girls and boys shouldn’t be told that?

For me, telling people they can’t wear socks is the issue!

wow, what a sexist reply. It is quite stressful for a young boy who is trying to walk up the stairs to
not look at the arses on show around him and also manage to look where he’s going. If he even so much as glances up to look where he’s going, he could be declared a pervert because he saw a girls underwear in front of him. This happened to my nephew. He’s 12 and small and very stressed by it. The male teachers cannot pull the girls up on the uniform violations and exposing their underwear because they know they will be accused of being perverts so they don’t.

I have a daughter and a son. If my daughter (currently primary school) was choosing to expose her underwear at school, I’d be furious with her as it’s completely inappropriate. It’s school, not the beach.

Of course they can. Anyone, boy, girl, man, woman can be told if what they are wearing in a professional capacity is not acceptable (and school is professional rather than social). I’m sure you’d be told to change if you rocked up to an office job wearing a full length gold sequinned ball gown.

Nice reply to bigboykitty, I was trying to make the point you put far more eloquently, it’s not about thinking of the poor men, rather the situation they end up put in because these girls want to show their knickers. I guess the whole no socks issue is simply applied to ensure that, if these young ladies want to wear there skirts as a belt, at least they will be covered by effectively being forced to wear some kind of tights. What a very sad world it’s become.

I worded it quite badly, I meant the socks

Thank you. It drives me mad. Some people think it’s fine for girls- many over 16 to be exposing their arse cheeks, underwear and in some cases, sanitary towels to other pupils as young as 11. Yet, there would be absolute outcry if 16 year old boys exposed that much of themselves to the girls, especially to the younger girls! It puts the boys and some of the other girls and the teachers (particularly male teachers) in such an awkward position that they really should never have to be in.

You think someone saying pupils should avoid displaying their knickers in school means they must have a Victorian sensibility?
Come on 😂

Beechtrees19 · 02/03/2026 14:25

I was in the swimming pool yesterday. There was a very large woman in a swimsuit with a thong over her buttocks. It was really not a nice sight for anyone. When did this become okay? I wouldn’t want to see a man in a jock strap in the pool either.

It’s strange isn’t it? For most people, a dream where they're walking around the supermarket naked is considered a nightmare, but nowadays people don’t mind letting it all hang out in any given scenario. Or that mortifying moment someone tells you your skirt is tucked into your knickers after you’ve been to the loo. Now you’d laugh in their face telling them that it was deliberate and the fashion and how dare you even notice 🤦‍♀️

Ok lets flip it then, boys walking around with shorts that exposes them on occasion to girls, the girls have said this makes them uncomfortable- oh well poor girls get over it. 🤔

Exactly.

Boys have the right to be able to walk around the school without having to look at the floor or keep their eyes closed because the alternative is to potentially have a girl’s bum in their direct line of vision.

Girls should not have to be made to feel uncomfortable about boy’s bodies being on show but it 100% works the other way round too.

You teach him a girl's body is not an offer and to control himself and his sexual feelings ...wowsers ...THIS is the problem.
